I'm looking to upgrade from a standard issued from provider router, to one that can handle some pretty serious gaming and downloading. I'm looking to start playing my 360 online, and sometimes play some of my online PC games. sometimes Netflix is running in the background or someone is playing farmvile....or some other internet "game" on the same connection.
I'm tired of high ping and lag and losing video quality on Netflix and all that.

I hear a gigabyte router is what I need? my head hurts from reading so much tech stuff.

Don't use a "router" ... use a proper computer firewall/router running a proper firewall distro like Astaro's free home edition, or some brand of Linux, or other linux based option.

the problem with routers is they usually don't have the resources to get the job done properly and they have crappy firmware which needs to be cleared all the time.

That and slow processors.

If you get a computer doing the job, you can be sure it's not the bottleneck

Linksys WRT54GL. You can swap the firmware if you want, I haven't bothered with mine. Don't game much.

If your that worried you can pick up a pro Cisco Router and be done with it.

My Apple Airport Extreme never fails me.. Best router I've used of them all... Including multiple Linksys units..

I have comcast internet as well and always game on my PS3... I'm usually picked for the best host too, even when my friends with wired internet are playing(have no clue if hosting has any relevance to the router or not).

Anyways, it's what works best for me and Apple doesn't slack with firmware updates for it.

That thing is a dinosaur now. It was great but with the new stuff that's out there with faster CPUs and N wireless. Hard to even find them anymore.

Cheap routers have shitty cpu's that can't handle many simultaneous connections.

I like Buffalo Tech and Asus routers.

Buffalo uses DD-WRT which Tomato is based on in there high end routers.

i have att u-verse (I get fat discount) i get 20 mbps on the 2wire router modem thing, I had comcast before and i was using apple air port , it was great. Then i switched to a linksys e type. I was going to order this Linksys E4200V2 but i switched to U-verse . On comcast i was paying for 16 or 12 but i got 20 mbps all the time.
