My tire wear is almost completely on the outside of the tire. I do hard driving, often makeing the tires sing around corners but not sliding. The car isn't lowered at all. Is this type of wear normal for this type of driving or is my alignment messed up?
![]() Where those chunks are missing, it is almost bald now but in the center and inside of the tire its wear is minimal. Edit: and the tire pressure seems fine...thats the first thing I checked. Take it to an alignment shop and make sure everything's good. You don't have to do this every time you rotate your tires.
Hard driving is gonna wear your tires faster. Minimal negative camber is good for even wear in normal, everyday, low-g load, driving. But under hard cornering, the tire will roll a little, causing the outside edge to work a little harder than normal...do this often and you'll notice a little extra wear there. The cure...negative camber. But this will cause wear on the inside during everyday driving. It's probably just your alignment if it's alot of wear though. Take it in and get it checked...if everything's to spec, tell them to add a degree of negative camber and see if that helps. check your air pressure in your tires. too much air itll wear out in the middle and not the sides. and if you have too little air the sides wear out while the middle doesnt(might be your proublem maybe not its an easy check you can do in minutes)

well, he said the tire pressure seemed fine.
BTW, what was it DSC? 240sxracer has a very good point, though. Try increasing pressure a little first. If that doesn't seem to help much, do what I stated previously. |

If I am seeing that correctly, there are chunks taken out of the shoulder and a bit of rollover onto the sidewall? To me, that looks like a tire that has suffered hard cornering at too little inflation. Alignment might not be an issue. My crappy street tires I first autox'ed on used to look juuust like that if I didn't keep enough air in them.
A good way to tell is to take a white marker/liquid paper/chalk and make a couple lines on the outside edge of the tire. Go for an agressive spin. If the marks are worn too far onto the shoulder/sidewall, add more air and repeat until you feel more comfortable. BTW: what kind of tires are you running? It may just be time to get something with a stiffer sidewall... |
