^^ What r your plans for this new trunk??
Yea I got another thread but I have to contribute to the Fabrication thread The paired runners just did not work with the room I had but I will design a topmount mani with paired runners iv been driving it for a couple days now and really I have full spool at 18psi around 3700-3800 rpms so its not bad at all for not being paired. |

Done with trunk bracing - I first took out all the damaged portions, ground/scraped out the OEM body glue, and removed a lot of the "big gap filler" I'd sprayed in there before. Then I cut out the rest of of the trunk floor:
Since one of the major reasons I'm doing this is to get proper trunklid/tail light fitment, I wanted to start there... but there's nothing to measure against! The FSM's body alignment pages were virtually useless, since I couldn't work out where they were measuring from without seeing the car from the bottom. I decided to start with an upper cross brace/rear bumper support, and then make bracing for the Kognition GT wing stands. Mocking everything up was MURDER... when you have no reference points to speak of, and everything moves in ALL 3 DIMENSIONS, its extremely hard to get everything 'square'. Turned out well though ~ then I started on the rest of the 'bottom' of the trunk, which is flat under the subwoofer box and then rakes up @ 10* to match the future diffuser: In the last pic you can see that I cut one of the cross-braces for extra trunk space. Lastly, I started welding in the trunk floor, then got hungry and called it a night lol. Hoping to finish up tomorrow. I know this post is pretty quick/not detailed, but I actually put a lot of thought into how I wanted to do this lol. The trunk was REALLY bad before, had sections that would actually creak and moan as I went up driveways or cornered hard - now it'll be solid, quiet, hopefully stiffen up the rear suspension. Icing on the cake is the fact it should still be lighter than what I pulled out, even with using 12ft+ or so of 3/4" sched 60 square tubing and a couple 2'x4' .030" 4130 sheets.

Lol did you never see the inside of the trunk area? I bought it with a smashed back end, had Mike @ iDesigns "replace" the quarterpanel (did an absolute shit job), and just lived with it for a year and a half. Now I'm fixing it, so I can add sound deadening and actually have it be nice to drive in.

Side note: the sub box (and front woofer boxes) are made of 1/2" birch, reinforced inside with fiberglass resin - the sub is a paper cone, Soundstream Reference with a low-mass magnet. With a single 4ch amp, the whole sound system weighs just over 30lbs, with most of the weight just aft of the rear axles. Certainly not making or breaking anything Quote:
Found a pic of it, after someone 'attempted' a repair, but before Idesigns Mike botched the quarterpanel repair:

I know where your coming from with replacing a quarterpanel I did mine it was not hard but took time to do it right. I replaced about as big as a section as yours. I would not mind a sub in my trunk as well I love music. and your wing is going to be awesome but by the way things look will your trunk still open???

Some random shit from the z31 crowd.
3" downpipe: wastegate dump (open dump) custom upper rear coilover mount to adapt s13 coils to the z31. FPR mount Front s13 coilovers (stance) adapted to z31 I don't have the faintest fucking idea what i'm doing, but it's working out so far. |

What's the fitment like on the inside? My quarterpanel replacement looked fine from the outside, but there were gaps on the inside, and that let a bunch of road grime and road noise into the cabin. Also, it was incompletely welded to the body, so it 'creaked' when I'd go up driveways and lift a tire off.

Ill have to take a pic of the inside. But the fitment is perfect on the inside even where the charcoal canister vent thingy is. I completely (mig) welded it to the rest of the body. Iv had it done for like close to 2 years now and I have had not 1 prob with it cracking and it does not leak at all and the road grime stays outside . My car has always been really loud so idk about the noise lol

More trunk work done the last few days - just a few more spots to patch up with lil pieces of sheet metal, then it gets cleaned/bondo'd/covered with Damplifier Pro.
I don't know if these pics show it as much as the "naked" ones from last week, the supports are triangulated to (hopefully) add rigidity to the quarterpanels, as before they would visibly flex (one goes up, the other goes down) when taking driveways/etc - I know that I can jump on one side now and it's not even close to flexing. Also, I tried to minimize welding the supports parallel to the centerline, so that I'll still have a little crumple action if rear-ended, and hopefully the whole thing won't collapse if I get tagged on a rear corner. The support members are all welded to the frame rails. It's not symmetrical, since the inboard exhaust hanger is so far towards the centerline... also, you can see that it's flat for a section (where my sub box will sit), then tilts up at 10* - this 10* slant is perfect for a diffuser, and if continued forward, would meet a future undertray just under the rear subframe LCA mounts. Discuss?

and so we chopped out those metal strips and did this. not only is it going to be sealed up now, it will be greatly stronger in the back and the rear suspension isn't "free floating" anymore per say. and once I get money to build a subframe I can also do some sick tuckage lol.
