gapping plugs down looses power, wider gap = better burn. If your having to gap your plugs down to very small ammounts, you need to upgrade.

Wider gaps do not make a big difference in power, but burn more efficient which helps with idle, cruise and start up. It is the cylinder pressure (causes blowout) that decides if you need to close your gap so the spark can jump. I am running LS2 coils and could probably open up to .044 since they burn hot as hell. I get a blue spark from these bad boys.

I run an NGK BKR8EIX gapped to .020
On an SR with a 3076r turbo making 477hp. works perfectly for me and i don't have to replace my plugs every other week as i would with copper ones. |

The electrode which can be made of copper, iridium, platinum, etc does not effect the temperature inside the cylinder. The amount of insulation under the white ceramic shell on the spark plug determines the temperature of the spark plug (Heat Range can be a Hotter/Colder Spark plug). Thats why higher hp motors usually have one step or two step colder spark plugs. Different electrodes only determine longetivity of the spark plug. Top fuel drag cars use basic copper spark plugs that many of you use. There's no such thing as a stronger/weaker/colder/hotter "spark". A spark is a spark and nothing else. What determines performance is the gap. Gap should be determined based on the engines OEM specifications or secondary ignition system output if aftermarket. Also spark plugs (If using the correct ones) can NEVER cause detonation. The only way you can is if you use the incorrect spark plug that is a hotter heat rang or has a longer reach which will increase the compression (That is if it doesn't hit the top of the piston). I think the word that you're looking for is "misfire". Can be caused by usually incorrect gap. Spark plugs come already gapped to OEM specs but I always double check. WARNING: IRIDIUM SPARK PLUGS SHOULD NOT BR GAPPED. THE ELECTRODE WILL GET DAMAGED! |

Just to share some opinion and personal experiences with spark plugs, I think HKS Iridiums are the best spark plugs out there for turbo cars. I know many will chime in here and flame me saying otherwise. I am not saying that NGK Iridiums are not good (That's what I currently have in my S13 and I am not complaining) but yes, I have had experience with HKS Iridiums and they are just the BEST hands down. If you really look at the design of the HKS plugs, you will see that you get less vibration so the gaps don't change. Many will scratch your heads, but some people know what I am talking about. Just look at the HKS spark plugs and the NGK/Denso (whathaveyou) and you will see that the HKS spark plugs have a shorter electrode that is much more resistant to vibration. The insulation is much different and well, I don't have any pictures to back up my opinion at the moment, but I will take some pictures and post them up so people can see and understand where I'm coming from. It is also designed to take high boost. I'm sure the problem that many of you have with ignition/misfire/detonation is in regards to running a hotter plug then necessary for your application, but I will guarantee any of you, get the HKS plugs and you will never look back.
I have not had experience running the plugs in an S-chassis. However, I have had experience in a couple Supra's and IS300 with a VVTi 2JZGTE and the plugs make a world of difference compared to the Denso plugs or even the NGKs. The performance of the car is just amazing and smooth throughout the power band and does not sputter or "give out" at higher RPM's or under higher boost levels. I will post picture and specifics of the HKS spark plugs. I should have a couple laying around the shop. The difference with running HKS plugs and NGK is instantly noticeable. Now I can't say that you will get 20whp just by upgrading to HKS nor am I a rep for HKS by any means. I am just stating my opinion and experience with this particular spark plug. Many people don't want to "waste" $20/per plug for the HKS units, but I think it's a great investment. Especially when you are putting so much money into the motor, turbos, manifolds, front mounts etc. I think the $80 for a set of HKS plugs is well worth the outcome. Yes I will be getting these plugs in the near future and I am not telling everyone to go ahead and buy these. But I do believe in all of HKS products and think that these plugs are the absolute best for Boosted motors. |

I use NGK V-powers on my L28E with a Turbo slapped on it, shooting at 10PSI gapped to .032 and I love it everyday. Not sure why I gapped it so low, but it does feel a bit nicer in boost now that I did. Stock gap is .044 but I remember some of the plugs not being gapped there, so I was thinking about regapping my plugs to .045 or so. She ran fine either way but seems smoother with a smaller gap

Find me NGK plugs with the same design as the HKS and I will believe that. Yes NGK does make the plugs for HKS but that does not mean it's the same thing as the NGK's. The design is different and better suited for boosted cars. I have the HKS plugs at the shop so I will take some pictures and get back to this thread when I have the chance.
Again, not hating on NGK or other brand of spark plugs out there. |
