How much to fix it up?
I was looking a picking up a 93 240sx today and I wanted to ask about how much it would take to fix/replace some of its problems, or if would even be worth it. The guy wants $2800, both the front and rear bumper need a repaint, the dash is completely destroyed, it has three huge cracks all the way through it. The wing on the trunk is not attached on one side and needs replaced ( the hole into the trunk is exposed and will probably leak pretty bad. ). but what actually kinda worries me is he said the value cover gasket needs replaced, should I be worried about other seals in the engine or is this no big deal. Thanks in advance, and sorry if you guys have answered these questions 1000 times already

The valve cover gasket is any easy fix, just buy a new one at Autozone and replace it. I dont know about the dash seems kind of in bad shape.

bumpers: well im not sure what color the car is, so depending on what color the bumpers are could change the price of paint significantly (i mean if its white it could be $20 for paint, if its a red, it could be $70, add metallic, could be more), in any case, id expect around $200 for a bodyshop to take care of the bumpers for you, or you could just get the paint in cans from duplicolor and just paint them yourself on the cheap...prolly wont look great, but its an option...if it were me, i wouldnt care as i can paint and have professional painting equipment...not everyone has that option though dash: hop on craigslist, there are tons of parts for cheap that are taking up room in peoples garages they just want gone. i have a guy here in cincinnati that builds drift cars for himself, and is continually buying junk s13s and stripping them for parts (or rebuilding good ones to flip). he has a dash with a small crack in it for $10 and a perfect condition one for $50...im sure you'll be able to find something similiar...plus at the end of the day, like the bumpers, this is just aesthetic problems, they dont stop the car from working and can be easily fixed wing: if you are saying the wing is trashed, you could always pop the hatch/trunk and just unscrew it, goto the autoparts store and buy little rubber grommets to seal up the holes until you get a new wing from a forum or at the junkyard even...if the wing just needs to be attached on one side, thats like a tiny fix and if you asked someone at an autoparts store to help you, they probably would...this fix shouldnt cost you anything besides parts, which could be anywhere from a couple bucks to a couple hundred depending on what wing you use...again this is a simple aesthetic issue, if it were me, id just pull the wing in a couple minutes, measure the size of the holes, and goto the autoparts store and buy grommets to fill the holes... valve cover gasket: thats a simple common issue with old cars...typically they get damaged when people remove the valve cover to check the valves, cams, or something who knows, but dont use seal bond on certain points or they over tighten the valve cover, or they just fuck up installing it and damage it...plus the valve cover gaskets dont last forever so they just wear out...that item is so cheap that if you cant afford it, you probably cant afford to drive a car...if the engine runs fine, i wouldnt worry about any other seals, plus seals/gaskets are cheap... i hope that helps...if it were me i wouldnt be concerned, but id try to talk him down on the price telling him that because of the problems, you may need to spend some money to make it look good...offer him 2200-2400...i mean for 2800 i can find some really nice condition 240s without those problems...if he wont budge on the price, just walk away, and hell prolly call you up and take your lower offer, and if he doesnt, find a nicer one for cheaper |

As said before the valve cover gasket is very minor, i recently swapped mine when i painted my valve cover so it would be around 20-40$. And as for the wing, if you are really serious about the car you might as well get the holes welded and body filled by a body shop get the trunk painted OR the whole car painted for that matter if you want your bumpers and everything else to match up. |

Thanks for the responses guys. I ended up picking it up Sunday for 2800 ( he was asking 3500) It had a clean title, great paint ( except the bumpers ) and only 127K miles on it ( the odometer was inspected last year according to autocheck) I bought the stuff to do the basic maintenance on the car and was plaining on getting it ready for emissions tonight. Unfortunately someone decided to run a stop sign today with their freaking Chevy Colorado and smash up my entire passenger side. My fingers are crossed that they wont total it out ( it still drives great ) but I 'm not holding my breath.
