Basically, its one of those if you have $1300 to spend on coilovers, get stance, but if you have $2500 to spend on coilovers, get DG5?

How much are DG-5?

I'd really like to know the scientific differences that make this a better driving coilover for drifting.

i could buy extreme dimensions aero
or i can go w/ BN sports
i took the latter.

ebay turbo vs garrett
te37s vs mb motorings

its all a choice. pick what u want and do it.
i dont buy stuff to appease other people
i buy what i want

Helper springs just keep the main spring captive when the shock fully extends right?

What else do the do?

lowers the shock piston in the 'sweet spot'
gives u full range of the shock
especially when ur car is low, the shock doesnt compress all tha tmuch w/ a high spring rate
u get more shock travel

use full rebound/compression

on a good shock, thats good.

also yes keeps your shock in place if u have the wheels off the ground
either jumping at the track or change wheels or leaving driveways

i use to always lift wheels front and rear
when it sets BANG loud noise while it sets back down

i dont get that anymore w/ helpers springs.

Damn.
I wish I was into drifting more so I could justify buying these. These are the first new coils in a long while that don't look chintzy to me.

I especially love that the bottom of the rear shocks doesn't taper to a 10mm diameter, and that the front shock mounts are braced like crazy.

ah cool stuff, did not know this

I have STANCE GR+ right now and frankly, I'm not good enough to notice the difference in a better coilover system IMO. Maybe one day I can get a set of these though

Looks good Aaron.
I'm interested to hear your review...esp. compared to Stance GR+ Pro.
I'm not a fan of Stance after seeing shock dynos, but I would imagine for $2500, these shocks are far better.

Stance makes great coils for a great price, switch the springs and you will be satisfied up until a very high level of driving.

I know alot of people who run stances, on the streets, the tracks and the Pro circuit blah blah. These people hold licenses ranging from NOPI to FD to D1. And All of them are quite happy with stances. Especially for the price.

Plus, all the lower end stuff comes from the same country (taiwan), unlike the DG-5.
The thing is, most of you only get coilovers to lower your car, improve handling, and to say you have coilovers. Can the lower end stuff perform like the 2.5k+ stuff, of course not. But, 90% of you cannot drive well enough, and do not drive hard enough to tell the difference, or for it to matter. Coilovers are a big investment and will improve your driving. and i doubt that you will be dissatisfied by Stance.

But the only thing that really matter (ESPECIALLY for drifting..oh wait, make that any motor sport) is seat time and the driver himself.

Although some disagree to these kinds of plots.

DG-5s are the shit in Japan though. Let us know how they compare, they should feel fairly similar.

So does this mean taking out preload to lower the shock piston is a good thing if done properly?

Very true statement, mostly.
I prefer Koni though...plus I like putting things together myself (Koni 8610 is in the works after I have the cash, and feel like getting rid of my Tein HE).
Btw, KiD, nice post. I like the dyno for the DG-5's. Very impressive. I wonder if they make/build their shocks, or outsource.

so is this saying w/ swift springs, STANCE would be a relatively close second to DG-5 in on track feel and performance?

Supposing that the plots posted were 100% accurate, yes.
Most would not even notice the difference though.
I would imagine Aaron will though. Over the years, he's got more seat time than most on this forum.

from swift springs usa's site

assist springs

Quote:
Assist springs have two functions. The first is the spring adds a progressive rate to the initial portion of the stroke. This progression can add increased comfort is used on a daily driver coilover setup that has stiff springs installed. It provides racers added softer spring rate progression. Once the assist crushes, the normal spring rate will take over.
The second job is the same as helper springs. They prevent the loss of traction during rebound, and extreme cornering.
Quote:
Assist springs are designed to repeatedly be fully crushed. Every assist spring crushes to the same height. That allows drivers to change assist springs without resetting the spring perch on coilover without changing ride height.
helper springs
Quote:
Swift helper springs are specially designed to provide minimal effect on spring rate. Using helper springs allows the spring to stay firmly on its perch when the shock has negative or zero load. Driver should use helper springs if they experience springs coming loose from their perch and/or they can not preload the main spring because of car height issue.

Very nice but way too deep in the baller status for me to pick up......with a full time job. In the future maybe I just can justify buying a coilover set that costs more then my engine and trans.
