Milk: When does it really go bad?
So I want some Milk and some Chocolate Chunky cookies to dip.
I open the fridge and the date says Oct,8th. Is it no good to drink after this date or is it the date it should be sold by? smells ok.

It smells bad in the gallon.
But I poured it into a cup and it smells ok. I am not down to drink spoiled milk. It happened once and it was the fucken worst.

It usually smells funky in the container anyway.
If I have to think twice about whether its bad or not, I throw it out. Last time I committed to finishing it cuz I told myself it was good and I didn't feel so great later. |

Dude it says Oct 8th on the jug?
It's still good. I drink milk that is way older than that. It might taste a bit sour but cookies w/o milk is LAME

its fine lol. the only reason that it smells bad in the jug is because the milk dries around the opening...making it smell bad.
your fine.

Oh man don't even get me started.
Milk is good by the way and the smell is gone after I cleaned top with wet cloth. I had the habit of driking out of the jug, one day I was up late and grabbed it and took a chug down and felt something bump my lip after the second gulp. That shit looked like yogurt and tasted soooo bad, I puked in the kitchen on the spot.

I will go only 2 days maximum over the date posted on the carton. I've been drinking milk for a long ass time and have been very critical about it. I noticed that after about 2 days it starts tasting different, maybe not BAD, but different. I'm sure with cookies it will be ok though.

Shelf Life of milk depends on how long it's been sitting out side of fridge that's above 36F degrees.
So, let's say your milk's "leave store by" date is tomorrow and you had it for about a week. Your milk will be good to consume for about a week after the "leave store by" date. as long as it's been sitting at 36F degrees or below. meaning, you don't leave your milk out, pour it and put it right back into the fridge. then you are good there.. On the other hand, when you leave your milk out above 40F degree temp every 30 mins, it'll loose a day or so of it's shelf life. So, rule of thumb, put it back in fridge after you are done pouring, and throw it out after about 5~6 days of it's leave store by date. and of course, taste/smell check is good too, as long as it don't taste sour/bitter/too "buttery", should be good to drink. Or, best way to go about it is...don't buy gallon of milk if you don't plan on drinking it all by leave store by date. PS: Yes, I am bored.

I just get Soy Milk now, it has a super long shelf life and is usually long gone before that time rolls around anyways.

Buy raw milk next time. Milk only spoils because it's been pasteurized. Otherwise it just curdles and then you can make cheese!

I can't remember if it's soy, lactaid milk or both, but if you read it carefully the "expiration" date that's on it is for when it's UNOPENED. Once opened it's recommended you drink it within a week.
