I need a cheap car.
Hey everybody I was thinking yesterday after I got back, I only have 1 car now. a 1977 280z. Was wondering though, I got to thinking I want a cheap car. I wanted to get an ae86 but too expensive for a 15 y/o. I wanted a car that can run reliably and that I can get for under 800$ I don't have a job so I can't fix one up right now to my taste. I'm leaning more towards the s12 coupe preferably. I have seen some go for 1000-2000 dollars have ca18det or ca18et. So basically I just want a cheap car that I can drift or time trials later on down the road if I want to. Can someone help me out? Give me like a good list of cars that might be down in my price range and can be capable of doing what I plan on doing? I could sell my Z's engine for like 300 its rebuilt just haven't gotten around to starting it so that might bring my budget up to 1000.
Positive and negative comments welcome. I know most negative will be about my age and stuff but I get my license in 3 months.

Why would you be worried about only having one car if you can't drive it yet? I mean 3 months is close but you don't know if you'll like to DD the Z or not yet. Anyways, if you HAD to get another car I would suggest a miata.

or an e30 318i they can drift or track.
In Socal I'd say get a cheap bike for gas savings. I'm going to get some 80's bike for my DD under 1k and still pretty fun |

I can't drive the z because the wiring is all messed up and chewed by rats. I'll sell the engine and chassis, the chassis is completely rust free. I sell both separate since I can make more that way. =]

Get an 80-83 (?years exactly) te72 corolla for <$500. Similar to a AE86 but simpler/cheaper and bookmark club4ag.com
The blue one on the bottom is an 86 BTW

I'm applying to target as I type this. I don't have any bills except for my own food. So 100$ a week on food the rest for gas and parts. Not bad I think wont be much, but I wont cruise around as much.

800 dollars? what?
GET A FUCKING LOAN and get a car that won't fall apart on you in a week. get a loan for four grand, buy an EG civic, and pay the minimum every month. your credit will improve, the payments will be next to nothing, and you won't have to worry about your pile of shit car dying every time you drive it. edit: you're 15? how do you already own a project car at 15, and you don't have a reliable car? do you have parents? what's the whole story? you can't even drive yet. double edit: man, if you're just learning to drive, you don't want a hunk of fuck that you'll be repairing all the time. you should be focused on LEARNING HOW TO DRIVE, not on learning how to drive competitively. DO NOT buy an s13, or an 86, or anything that could be considered remotely fun or sporty as your first car. get something reliable, low horsepower, good on gas. learn to drive safely and respectfully. you may think you know how to drive, but you don't. nobody does when they first get their license.

cressida was my first car. if you get a rwd car that has some power, you will be tempted to fuck around in it, and you WILL fuck it up. i know too many people that had that happen.
trust me, save up more money than that. since you live in apple valley a good reliable car shouldn't be hard to find because thats where a lot of old people live and they baby their cars from the 80's and shit hahaha target doesn't pay much dude. the more money you have to buy a car the happier you will be in the long run. like everyone else has said, you don't wanna have a car thats gunna break down a lot. |

I can't say I'm learning how to drive. I've been learning to drive for a while now. When my bro goes drifting we set up cones I set up a track to learn how to drive/drift... My mom has a jumper delivery business I drove all the way from Felan to Apple Valley which is like 30 minutes drive. 10 minutes on freeway. I know I'll prolly get neg repped because you think I drive illegally but, I have my permit. So I'm allowed only with an adult though.

Well i got a 240 for my first car and im still 16. Driving stupidly, no just try to FIND any type of job as least for minimum wage (should be easy since summers coming by) i worked at my mom's resturant for a year and i barely made anything but enough to buy a good condition 240.. Stock 240 is extremely reliable and yeah dont even start to think about drifting/competition yet. 1k for a car just get a old civic then work then sell and get whatever you want. 100 bucks is a sheet load a week for a 15 year old.

Who would have thought that AE86's would end up being too expensive to buy?
Get a MkII Supra while you still can before the prices jump. |

Really, old corollas are REALLY easy to work on. It would also be a good way to learn working on cars.

i push a '99 corolla as my DD. 30mpg's, even with the 3 speed auto thats in it. its slowly falling apart, but it still kicks. 137k on it. ive replaced only the starter so far. got new struts for it im going to install this week. pain in the ass. but the car aint bad if you need something to drive, on the cheap side.

You can't get a decent Miata for a thousand bucks.
I agree with the TE27 Corolla sentiment if you absolutely must have a RWD car. Otherwise I'd say go with an EF Civic. It might be a little pricier than the TE27, but it's easier to find, surpassingly reliable, and has a nice aftermarket.

I know how to work on cars. I can swap motor and transmissions and all the stuff. I just don't know how to work in the motor or transmission everything else I can pretty much do, but I guess you guys are right. Older and wiser. But believe me. I can bust more than 100$ a week on food. I don't eat out... If I do its mainly chicken salads. =] I'm by no means overweight though.
Also, I've been looking for te27 corolla but I just cant seem to find any. How they much they cost or anything.

TE72 are more common. Those are 80-83? and come with a bulletproof 3Tc engine. AE86 suspension parts fit w/ very minor fabbing. Short stroke setups are available using VW/mr2 front inserts & camaro rear shocks. Alot of people like the liftback and sportback models but I love 2-door coupes.

so let me get this straight, u already have a car with a rebuilt engine and you want another car with only 800 dollars. u dont have a job, u cant even drive yet, u want to drift the car in the future but u only have 800 and no job..... this is as bad as that thread about taking a loan for a 240sx. U already have a car, stick with it. I got my car by workin my ass off for 1600 when i was 17 and had that car till last month (im 22 now). I dont see y u cant stick with what u have now, save that 800 till u get more then u can get a car that u want in the future and start to do ur drifting and time trial thing. its expensive to work on cars and track events. track events come out to be a minimum of 200 each time (considering gas, track fee, motel the night before) and thats without tires and maybe other things. u workin with 800 is like enough to pay for gas for a few months. overall, stay with what u have, save the money, until u get a job u shouldnt even think about another car or even tracking it, go to college and focus on school. if u get something now and by the time u ACTUALLY have the money to spend for track and parts thatll be in a few years so whatever ur planning, its not wise at all but thats my opinion
