Post U.S. D1 Grand Prix cancelled for 2008

Photo: OriginLab.com

For those of you following the D1 Grand Prix here in the States, bad news came in the form of a press release from the drifting organization earlier this week. The D1 Grand Prix USA has been canceled for 2008 after challenges continued to rear their ugly heads from the series' organizers in Japan.

The 2007 schedule lacked any serious cohesion, but after hiring Mike Mucklin and the team that organized the GTLive tour back in 2004, we thought there might be a light at the end of the tunnel. Not so, and after Mucklin left the organization soon afterwards, it was clear that the D1 Grand Prix was in dire straights in '08.

Thankfully, Formula D, the series that's quickly becoming the definitive drifting organization in the U.S., has continually stepped up its game and is rivaling D1 in both excitement and organization. Fans can still get their sideways fix and check out Formula D's schedule here.

a friend txt me about this..

So they will not be having a US competition because the lack of staff to push or schedule the event?

The early US events where fun, when it was just 1 day events, not this stupid 2 day competitions to milk everyone for money.

well id imagine it must cost tons of money flying in everybody from japan for D1, esp some of the smaller teams who cant bring thier cars etc, esp without a big time sponsor. Not worth spending thousands of dollars for a smaller team to come out for a competition that they probably dont get any money to compete in unless of sponers.

Funny thing is they're trying to say Formula D is a good replacement for D1.

Sorry but I cannot support an organization that penalizes the chasing driver to pass the leading driver, even if the leading driver obviously made a mistake and goes wide, way wide. So retarded.

Formula d is still respectible i guess, but its just BORRING
ever try watching it on tv? snooze fest lol.. Sometimes I attend them when they are near me. But its always the same people who are big time sponsored... getting borring watching Kushi, Gitten, Millen etc..

D1 has the crazy antics and personalities that make it special.. not to mention, since its annual out here for the US, it makes it a BIG event.

wonder if they ever considered just having smaller events.. like D1 try outs.. i know they used to have those back in the days.. they could still pick up show/event sponsors and make it big.

D1 isnt what it used to be anyways. The first couple of events were bad ass but they got weak over time. Id rather go watch local events like d day.

They were badass because it was all new to us. Then more and more about the inner workings of D1 and it's politics came to light and then honeymoon was over.

Mainly from Chris Gregorian (Milano), that guy had a real problem with that. I remember seeing a match where the leader took the bank and he dropped down to the pit lane of the bank to pass and almost took out the leading driver. He used to drive the green S13 with the R32 rear from Milano Auto back in the day.

of course formula d is boring on tv..u think G4 or ESPN2 has actual drifters edit these segments?? or hell..even host the segments?? no...they think that their "market research" of 18-25 year olds is accurate...

gushi hasent been winning in forever..millen was way off his game, gittin had major car problems through out the year..this year is gunna be sooo much better

Iunno. D1 is always way more exciting and actually gets me out of my seat at the events. The talent level is just that extra bit higher that makes it so much more fun to watch.

Formula D is just meh. Boring big neo-muscle cars. Now Dai will be in the RMR GTO gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

I understand if they changed the rules so that if someone chasing is always trying to pass the leader, and always causing problems of almost taking out the lead car, to where they can punish them for it.

But to punish the chase car when the lead car was WAY wide cause they initiated way late and came in too hot, and the chase car had no choice but to take the inside line and pass him?

I mean, the chase car would have had to follow the gay line dictated by the lead car, and possibly spinning out, just to avoid getting a big fat zero for passing?

WTF?

And also, passing would make for a cut and dried win in D1, but you don't see those guys taking each other out every time they're out there. It's called self control and knowing your limits.

Chris Gregorian (Milano) is clearly tunnel visioned and cannot see that if he cannot make the pass, he won't lose the battle either. He's just friggin stubborn and too tunnel visioned to see past that, and he was really the only one that had that problem.

Point is, I watched the Option videos after staying up from 1am to 2am EST to watch Formula D on ESPN2 HD, and it was pretty clear that the F-D format and scoring system is OK, but at the same time, crippled by some retarded amendments. I'm sure there are some retarded rules from D1 too, but since I don't understand Japanese, and nothing really came up recently that required the judges to pull the "retarded rule" out of the bag, it just made D1 more enjoyable.

Again, I pretty much stood up and put my arms up in the air and went "HELL YEAH!" when I think it was Tyler McQuarrie that passed Dai, only for them to go "aww, Tyler's run got him a zero for passing Dai."

That was gay.

Automotive blue balls, if you will.

Man this is a total bummer!
I am glad I went to the only Local D1 event last year in NJ.

FD in no way compares to D1GP, IMO of course.

Perfect example here:

Koguchi vs Nobushige 2007 1:40 mark.

Sorry.... I find the whole passing part of the sport to be the entertaining part. It would be such a tease to see a guy start to pass and then go "oh damn, I can't pass.. That's illegal..." and then back off.

I'm a fan of D1.

I still like watching D1 even though I sometimes feel the judges play favoritism towards the big name players with big tire sponsors.

I've been watching some Option videos lately and D1 is definitely not the same anymore. Some of the changes are good some are bad.

Yeah, I just stood up with my arms up, and Koguchi probably won that round, since Kuma got 'minus point' for under and tapping Koguchi on his lead run.

See, Koguchi would have had a zero for that run for doing that in Formula D.

Formula "D", "D" for effort.

I still think Formula D is just as good as D1 its gives alot of opportunity for Us drivers to become well knows. As far as rules go Fd does have some more strict rules but Fd is also a whole lot safer as far as driver saftey concerns go. I dont know how many of you went to this last d1 (In California) but the size of the crowd was a joke. FD at Irwendale was packed and so was Long Beach. D1 obviously isnt making enough money to do D1 USA and if they have it at all im sure it will take place at Irwendale since that is the place that would bring the most people. From what I hear alot of the Japanese dudes are trying to get in to FD before the season starts which would be pretty cool. So im just gonna expect to see an awesome season for FD America Fu#$ YEA

D1 > FD > D1USA.

lets not forget that D1 and D1USA are not the same. i believe that D1 still has their end of season event/int'l all star exhibition at irwindale speedway. what's being cancelled is the D1USA SERIES (which was supposed to hit Irwindale, New Jersey, Florida, etc). I think we'll still get to see the best of Japan out here in So Cal in November.

lets not forget that D1 and D1USA are not the same. i believe that D1 still has their end of season event/int'l all star exhibition at irwindale speedway. what's being cancelled is the D1USA SERIES (which was supposed to hit Irwindale, New Jersey, Florida, etc). I think we'll still get to see the best of Japan out here in So Cal in November.

Yea they are still having the 2 day in Irwendale. The thing that sucks most is for people who just got their D1 license in 07. Of course D1 and D1 USA are not the same but what difference does that make since you only get to se D1 USA?
