Shifter Spring?

I went to install my short throw on my s13 and when I unbolted the middle bolt closest to the drivers side of the car, a spring shot out at me. Long story short, I installed the shifter and forgot the spring. What does the spring even do and is it important?

I believe that there is a spring on either side of the shifter to help center it. For example, when doing the side to side "wiggle" to check if its in neutral, the resistance you feel comes from those springs.

I only had one pop out of the drivers side middle hole. How would these springs even work?

Do you feel more slop in the shifter when moving it laterally towards the driver side?

Not that I can tell.. the springs you’re talking about are the ones that go here?

Hmm that’s weird. Didn’t touch those at all. The spring I was talking about came out of the drivers side middle of the 6 bolts that hold the shifter down

you should have a ball bearing in that hole too. not just the long thin spring.

The springs on the sides of the housings help reduce side to side slop. They are important yes. A few companies make upgrade kits, and I remember the ka-t.org guys had figured out home depot springs that worked.

I put slightly stiffer ones in my trans and it feels much better.

I dont fully understand how that one works yet. i got a couple of these trans ive taken apart and still have no idea what that spring does
what i do know it is pushes against one of the pins that center the shifter BUT it pushes against that pin perpendicular
Would love to know what it actually does

Looks like it’s somewhat important lol, So this spring does go back into the middle drivers side shifter bolt hole?

Its the only one that can shoot out when you pull the shifter
I think it goes next to the driver side middle bolt hole. it should have its own separate hole.
like I said looking at it almost doesn't look like it does anything. so its really hard to say. but I assume its must be important lol
it may have something to do with preventing you from bumping your shifter into reverse on accident but idk that's all I can think of
