Hunting?
Does anyone go hunting? I am looking for a place in California to hunt some deer. Anyone have some good places to go? I am assuming deer season is in October so I will have to wait until next year. I wouldn't mind doing some varmint shooting either.
I am new to hunting and I only have a mini14. I am looking at getting a Remington 700 in .308 sometime in the future. You think the .227 will be sufficient enough in killing a deer?

Isn't the mini 14 .223? And yeah, I'd check into getting tags, cause I think there's a lottery for deer tags in cali. Oh, and varmints, depending on were you are, check with some local ranches, they're usually pretty cool about letting people on to shoot gophers and ground squirrels and such. Some will even lead midnight raccoon hunts. And def. get a 700, I have one and they're great rifles. And as for the .223 for deer hunting, I think the round is a little too light and has too much velocity, so instead of mushrooming and knocking the deer down it just fractures and bounces around inside. So for the deer I'd wait for the .308

mini 14's came in .223 and 7.62x39
either way, mini 14's are shit for accuracy, sell that pos already. good call on the m700 though, ive got an M700 police, and with handloads with a 175gr. SMK it will shoot sub moa all day long another one you should look at is the new m700 remington came out with.. forgot the model but its got a heavy taper with the 5R rifling ala M24, my friend just got one, it shoots sub moa with just regular off the shelf match ammo. anyways, back on topic. you can kill deer with a .223, it all depends on shot placement, but that mini 14 isnt all that great for shot placements haha. |

yeah, i meant 223. Don't know why i put 227. The mini30 is the 7.62
Yeah I know it is a crappy rifle for long range accuracy. I got the mini 14 as a cqb type rifle. Here in california we are not allowed to have assult type rifles. However, I got a different stock for it. I am just now allowed to put the stock with the rifle. I was also looking at the rem 700 police model. It looks so purty. I will probally be picking one up sometime next year. Still don't know what type of scope to get. One thing I am worried is about field dressing it. I have read up on it but never done it. It seems like a lot of stuff to do. What type of knife should I use? All I read is that I don't need a Rambo knife. Do you guys use bi-pods for hunting or is what for wussies?

I never understood hunting with a rifle.
Now if you killed it with your bare hands then mad props. But with a rifle from 100 yard away. Hmmmmm......... Just my opinion. |

oh i thought we were talking wheel specs. hunting with a rifle aint easy man. its almost impossible to get 100yrds within any animal. theyre smarter faster hear better and all sorts of other senses we dont know about. but in the end if you spray yourself with tons of deer hormones and hide in a bush theyll come looking for sex and you shooot them up. it takes skill to hunt. its not just point and shoot. you have to scope out the animal and make sure its not the wrong sex, make sure its the proper type , make sure your not shooting a human. aiming. all sorts of factors before you take a shot. and you dont have the time to think of all that shit unless you have experience doing it. i think 308 is too big for a deer man. it will blow a hole in it. ill ask my dad what he reccomends i dont know everything. i am still learning frmo him. but i been hunting since i was like 5yrs old and shit. we go every year. ill let u know next time we go and maybe u can cruise. i know you have your military gun license safety thing so u can get a hunting license easily. we go dove hunting which is the most fun but you would need a shotfun. if you wanna go hunting with a rifle and scope ill ask him what he knows about CA. we go to wyoming for antelope and colorado for elk.

I want to kill a rabbit with my hands just like Bear Grylls did. Judo chop to the neck.

while in a marine corps, ive taken out 2 jack rabbits, a friend took down a buffalo with the 50cal. another hit a fox with the mk2 nade launcher, and during boot, my DI smashed a rattler about a foot away from my head. i didnt even know the sucker was there. But still.. i think bitch slapping a humming bird is crazy funny. |
