My take on a daily driver s13 build
So i have been flipping 240s for 2-3 years now, buying nearly stock 240s with blown motors (and usually auto) and making them run and 5spd. This has allowed me to build this, my other s13 that I listed for sale last year but (fortunately) decided to keep: http://zilvia.net/f/cars-sale/485628...ni-8610-a.html
Picked up this shell in Feb. with the intention of flipping it, but decided instead to keep it and build an additional s13 that was friendlier on the street and a bit lower maintenance. I had just finished building a miata, but after roll bar install, the bucket seat, my head and the roll bar needed to occupy the same space, and it just wasn't gonna work out. So sold that car and poured money into this shell. [/URL] Anyhow, the shell came with an r33 4.36 vlsd, 5 lug (redrilled 4 lug hubs...) and front z32 brakes and CHROME s14 wheels unghhhh. It had been sitting for a couple years and had its own ecosystem. First order of business was an SR, ordered from JDM Engine Corps. I ended up installing an Exedy Stage 2 clutch (found very slightly used on here), s14 oil pickup tube and gasket, and a Circuit Sports oil pan, and CS clutch pivot. Running basic CX fmic setup, miata battery, rs*r 3" downpipe and test pipe (bought used, of course) and a Greddy 2.5 "U.S. Spec" exhaust that is pretty quiet despite grapefruit-sized tip. Plus JGS engine mounts and Peak Peformance poly trans mount. Being a dark blue car, it had blue interior, which I don't love. I had a full black interior from a part-out I did of a friend's wrecked hatch, so out came the interior to be replaced with black. I originally put in s14 seats but sold those in favor of r32 gtr seats which I like a lot. Copied the steering wheel setup from my coupe (Sparco r345 purchased again from Import Image, momo hub and NRG QR). We actually modded the rear bracket of the seat to sit about 1.5" lower so I could fit with a helmet (important in your daily driver!). Being a DD, wanted to keep bumper support so a little bit of trimming and a couple of brackets, and voila: Since I'm a hopepless NRR-fanboi, suspension is sort of what I like to do and pride myself in my 240s. The front of this car is the Koni 8610 setup (found here: http://zilvia.net/f/archive-faqs/270...-assembly.html) and in the rear to save money I went with z32 yellows and coilover sleeves. This means z32 uprights which save some weight. The fronts uses fortune auto radial bearings to allow the spring to rotate freely instead of making the camber plate bearings turn, but the konis have a 14mm shaft (whereas the FA bearings are 12mm ID) so I had to use mcmaster and make something work. I also threw in Battle version tension rods, RUCAs and Toe arms. I have a 30mm tanabe front sway bar sitting on the shelf that I haven't installed yet, too. Spring rates are 450# in the front, 300# in the rear (that's 8k/5k for the jdmcoolguys). Bought a set of Drag DR-31s with super sick SS595s initially, which looked ok, but still not my style. Ended up find a set of 17x9 rpf1s for super cheap, and put a set of 245/40 Continental DW tires on them, which are excellent in the rain -- important when you live in the NW. Final product: I've been dd'ing the car for a few months now, and taken it to a couple of autocrosses, and it's been rock solid. Very simple build, but rides great, is quiet, and still gets good gas mileage. I did add a PowerFC that I got for a good deal, but still no power mods besides a turbosmart manual boost controller. If I keep this car for any length of time I'll add a rear Z brakes (picked up ebrake assemblies last weekend), and probably Koni 8610s for the back (moar lowar!! amirite?!). At the end of the day I probably could/should have bought a nicer, newer dd, but I love 240s and it's fun to build non-drift s13s since people never expect it Last edited by e1_griego; 08-22-2013 at 02:30 PM.. |
