Is there any other way to distinguish early rod knock and maybe valve tapping?

I just installed my motor, and it sounds like it could be either.

I had already installed a s14 pick up and new pan before starting it. When I removed the previous pan it had no metal shavings and the oil was clean. The previous pan had some light dents but nothing major.

I'll try to put up a video.

X2 Mine turned out to be my Alternator pulley bearing was getting ready to seize so it would knock (Knock would come and go might I add) and sounded like noise was coming from the engine, till one day it finally just seized in front of my driveway while it was running I immediately turned car off.

Here's a clip I took of the knocking

I recently had a rod knock SR...For about 1K in parts you can build a pretty nice bottom end and not have to worry about it again. Eagle rods, Supertech pistons and rings, ACL bearings, new OEM oil pump and pickup, etc.

Thats basically the route I went with mine. Hopefully your crank is fine. But yeah..gotta pay machine shop charges too...

Idk, fuck its late. Sorry about your motor.
