Oh, damn I should have seen that coming ha. I have a welded on my 240 and had a welded on my rx7. This is for a buddy of mine, his 300 is vsld. I guess the real question is where can he find an open diff for the 300? Do they have open diffs at all in that chassis? Thanks

No open diffs ever. Only option is finding someone to weld your VLSD, or getting a real LSD. Kaaz diffs aren't that expesnive. I'm rocking a Carbonetic 2 way in my Z32. I love it

You have all failed this poor noob. Too many kids on the whole welded wagon.

Shim it. Depending on size of shim it can lock as hard as a welded.

Lsd route is wayyyy to expensive for us poor noobs, BUT I did look into shimming and that seems like a great idea. Cheap and not too difficult either. Thanks guys.

You'll be spending money on a new diff or new gears for yoour diff from shimming though. A good Kaaz diff is like 600-700 bucks. That's less than coilovers.

Well the N/A diff's are interchangable with the 240sx diff (R200) so buy one of those welded and swappy swap.

Until the viscous heats up, then it's useless.

The reason people are on this "welded bandwagon" is because it's cheap as fuck and it works.

What year Z?

if it's a z31, you can get an obx helical diff ($400ish) and do the washer trick as seen on hybridz. It will then function very well, at least well enough to beat on for a good while.

It's a 1990. He actually went the 240sx diff route months ago, but it did not end well. Now I don't know the exact details, but from what I know, his axles were practically falling out not even 100ft down the street, so I'm assuming he changed the diff, pumpkin and all, and shit did not fit. Anyone have details on how to actually make a r200 diff work in the z? I'll pass on the information if its worth it. I'm sure he still has it on the side and it's already welded too, if I remember right.

Now for the shimming, he has thrust washers coming, as of yesterday. Even with the diff properly shimmed to get hard lock, overheating still causes it to start failing?

Won't work. Z32s run 5 bolt axles. And the 6 bolt axles off an S13 are too short. Won't work. I've thought abbout doing it, but I bit the bullet and just bought a proper LSD. Plus, it's a Z32. You don't do cheap shit to a Z32. If you have money to own and maintain a Z32, you have money to mod it properly.

I was talking to him last night and that's basically what he said. Out of the car they might seem the same length, but the 240 ones go deeper...? Either way, no good.

Again, anyone have any experience with an extra shimmed diff overheating and not locking properly?

The viscous fluid might be toast. No sort of shimming will make it lock again.
