10+ years now as a RN.
I challenge anyone to step in the ring for 12 rounds, MT rules with me. That is all I am saying on this stupid question.

be sure you can deal with it first though. I am not going to say it's easy but the pay is good.
Can you handle giving a HIV + person a needle for his pain med. Can you handle shit blood and guts on you with gods knows what disease in it.

your into be-heading?, cool you should be an OR nurse. They do harvesting all the time.
When a coke head kills himself we harvest pretty much every organ for someone who actually wants to live life to the fullest.

You never know how you will handle it till it's in your face. The smells, the visuals, and the overall sadness you are around all day (depending on what kind of field you end up in). My mom was a nurse for 30 some odd years. I've heard a lot of stories and know that you see a lot of shit. And this... I hope to god that anyone who has even posed this question does not become a nurse and is at my bed side in a time of need. Maybe that's just me though.

You will be taking care of pt's with C-diff, MRSA, SARS, HIV, TB, the list goes on and on. You can't catch any of that on the internets. +1 for your MOM!!! So true. If you are going into nursing for the money I can guarantee you will hate the job. That is why originally I said it was a stupid question, because it is.

from what i hear, the pay is great and the hours are long, but it's not for everyone. you basically have to take care of people who aren't able to take care of themselves. if you've ever taken care of a baby, imagine doing that with a full grown adult. i'm not talking about just babysitting either. you'd have to feed them, cloth them, bathe them, wipe the shit out of their ass, clean their puke, etc. feeding them and putting them to sleep is the easy part.
nurses have been in demand for a while now and with the aging baby boomer population, you know there will be a need for nurses in the near future. there are many different paths you can take from 2 year to 4 year university among others. of course the b.s. degree is better and you can go up to masters and phd. but with phd you are probably overqualified for the normal nursing jobs and limited to teaching. you have to do your own research to see what path to take. i'm pretty sure there is a board of nursing with an exam you have to take to become an RN also. i met a guy in my weight training class who was graduating that last semester and becoming a nurse. he told me he had a job lined up with stanford starting at $40/hr. not too shabby, but he told me stories of some nasty things he had to do when he was doing his clinicals with real life patients. one of the nasty things he had to do was put some kind of pill up some older man's ass with his fingers. he also told me he got pee'd on before when he was helping a guy with bladder problems who couldn't control it and his weiner just flung everywhere spraying the piss in the air and on his face. he also had to clean up shit a few times. i was surprised he started out so high. i was talking to one of my other friends who worked at a hospital part time and he said he's not surprised at the pay (some of the nurses at his hospital make over $100-120k, but he told me it could be a really nasty job. i think what i mentioned relates more with taking care of elderly people. i'm sure most nurses do similar things though. btw, this is coming from a guy who considered nursing as a major over 5 years ago (never seriously thought of becoming a nurse, but considered it because I knew it was a job with demand). i recall some of the nursing programs are difficult to get into. the guy i met in weight training told me lots of students are applying and the wait to be accepted could be 2-3 years and also mentioned the more prestigious nursing colleges take only the best students so you better have a 3.5+ gpa coming in, or you'll get rejected. our state college was already doing that by the time he graduated and he was fortunate he got accepted years before since his gpa was below 3.0 edit: btw, i'm one of the people who feel weak in the body when i see some gory shit on tv like live surgerious of people being cut open or exploding corpses. another reason why i knew i couldn't be a doctor/surgeon/nurse (that and i'm not smart enough) |

My wife just finished her 2nd semester of nursing school and while it's difficult, she loves it. Last semester she got to see a brain surgery. More importantly when she finishes next year, I'll have a ton of money to get my car finished! Oh yeAh, and something about job stability, but that part isn't all that important

You'd be surprised. My local hospital is filing for bankruptcy. Too many uninsured people going to the hospital that can't pay (homeless/immigrants/etc.) and doctors abusing their power by having patients stay in the hospital too long (more visiting hours for doctors = more $$ the hospital has to pay to them).

First 2 years as a male nurse. The only bad side is dealing with the senior nurses that have been employed before me and give attitude and drama in the professional environment.
They happily gossip and are a bunch of prima donnas.

Characteristically the west cost and NY/Boston areas pay a little higher. The only other thing I can think of is I work nights 7p-7a so I get the evening diff for the first four(which is jack) and the night diff($8.00/hr) for the last 8hrs a shift.

Nursing is cool and all but I like specializing, so I figured out that nursing wasn't for me and that's why I went to become an RT.
Reasons why I didn't want to become an RN over being an RT: I don't like talking to family. I get to be head of the bed during a code. I get to leave when the code is over while the RN gets to clean up RN's call me when the patient is going downhill fast. I got love for the RN's, i'm not hating |

a lot of people who are science majors at local state universities major in science in order to transfer into a medical school to become pharmacist, doctors, dentist, orthopedist, etc. (since many medical programs require a lot of the core science courses as prerequisites, much more so than engineering or computer science) it takes a lot of schooling and majoring in science is a lot of hours of school (every science course is usually accompanied by a 3hr lab and you probably need like 30+ science courses to complete the degree) i have a lot of respect for those people who major in science an do well. |
