Cutting the cord!
After looking at how much I spend on cable TV, I've decided it's time for a change. I hardly watch TV outside of sports and I caught up on my fave shows through the net. I've only keep the cable TV around cause of my roommate, but now that she's seen the bill after the promo ended, she's willing to do anything to save money. lol
Looking at the alternatives, it seems that we can get what we need through Hulu Plus and ESPN3.com. I will most likely catch any NBA on TNT games at a friends house. I'm now debating on building a media center or getting another PS3. So has anyone on this forum given up on cable TV? If so, what are you using?

In my old apt we got Comcast internet and cable for $50.

I heard apple tv is nice... 100 bucks for the unit .. but you just hook it up to your internet ... and you have like ton of channels as long as your paying your internet bill... pretty good deal if you ask me... i right now only have basic cable... witch consists of 6 channels .... and most of witch i do like .. and HBO is free, the cable guy said the company overlooked that on our service but he said hell keep it hush hush till they find it. so its been like a year now and they still dont know lol. but wish it was HD cable or something cuz normal cable on a lcd tv sucks.

I'm going to buy a Roku XD tomorrow and set it up. Try it out for a day and if my roomie is good, I'm canceling cable TV.

A slight off topic question, but since im from over the waters i find everything interesting haha.
With your Cable/PayTV how much would it be roughly and what kind of services would you get? In AUS it gets based on a few levels, The higher levels have Sports + Movies and you can only get them if you get the base. Our lowest level starts at $75 and includes No Dedicated Sports channels(ESPN/Speed/Fox) to get sports you would be up for $90 per Month, if you wanted moves then you would be up for $90 per month but no sports, If you wanted Sport + Movies its $100.. Is it the same over there? Or does 1 fee just get you everything!

My condo has cable included, but the only time I watch TV is for Sports. If I did pay I'd cancel it in the summer (off season for what I watch).
Are you getting ESPN3 with your internet provider's arrangement? Just know it doesn't have everything. Netflix can be ass sometimes. That paid Hulu service looks like a ripoff. I DL everything. Be aware that most ISP's cap your monthly transfer now. Comcast has a 250GB limit and AT&T has a 150GB limit. I have a LG Blu Ray player with WiFi so I stream everything off the network. It has a program called DivX TV that lets me catch two online shows I follow, The Basketball Jones (feed) and Diggnation (feed) as well as CBS News and a bunch of other free streaming shows. If you need some RSS video feeds for News The CNN Daily (video) NBC Nightly News (video) CNN In Case You Missed It (video) Video: CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley But you can catch your local news through air with an antenna in HD.

My cable & internet together is like $155/mo. This is basically everything, but there are still some channels I don't get that I want (Tennis, Outdoor, etc).
I also get a ton of channels I don't care about.

george, f tv. cut that shit.
I haven't had TV for a year now. My TV is pretty much just to allow my room mates to watch movies or play video games now.

i've gone without, but now we have expanded basic and a dvr for like $50/mo, so it's whatever. my buddy has one of those screwdrivers that takes the filters off, so the whole house has analog cable, which is nice when i'm doing laundry.
hulu plus didn't really have enough shows, and you couldn't watch shows immediately after they aired anyway. netflix is pretty great, though. if you're making a media center pc, i'd recommend Boxee. ps apple tv is bullshit

I moved out when I was 18 with a buddy of mine, we got a cheap apartment in the city, and haven't gotten any form of TV yet. We have an old school tv with my old PS2 hooked up to it, but thats it.

Haven't touched my TV in months. Watch everything on either Netflix, Hulu, or downloaded. Really no reason to have a tv any more for me.

Netflix pisses me off. It takes forever to get new DVD & BluRay releases. I end up hitting Redbox or BitTorrent anyways...
But for the guys who download, have you guys heard about the Six Strike coming from the ISP's... Major ISPs agree to "six strikes" copyright enforcement plan |

try cancelling your cable account, I did that last month and within 2 weeks I was getting 55% off all my services.
