Teriyaki is not Chinese - It's considered Japanese. But if you asked my ex, (she's Japanese) she'd say its some American creation because teriyaki as it exists in the US is not what it is overseas...

regardless of who invented it, the word itself is japanese. it means "shine fry." because the sauce is shiny and you fry food with it.

in mandarin, the same characters would be "zhao shao"

chao zhou hua literally translates as tide state speech.
