I am interested in a 1997 base model 5spd. I would much much much rather buy a SE or LE but considering that finding 5spd ones for a GOOD price is rare, i am actually considering this one. I was just wondering if i could get some advice: should i just wait for a SE or LE? i plan on doing everything- turbo, upgrade to coilovers....etc. i appreciate any advice- thnx.

Fairly recently I got a 98 5 speed, and it is the base model.  It came with alot of options on it.
Aside from optional and standard options, from what I know, the differences are:
base: 4 lug rims        SE/LE: 5 lug rims
         no leather                  optional or standard leather seats
         standard susp.           beefier suspension

Thats all I can think of.  Same engine.  Really the suspension is the only real reason to hold out for an se/le.

Except for the stock sunroof maybe. My car came with an aftermarket sunroof and it is very ugly. The flat piece of glass does not look right with the slightly curved roof.

that's why i didn't really worry about the se, cuz i was gonna change everything in the future neway. sounds like ur into honda's though...dx...what's up w/ that?

oops- dunno why i put dx.... i meant base model!!! does the fact that it is a repossesed car (company said it still had a strong transmission + 58k miles for $9500) make it worse to buy?

My car is a reposessed car.  There are a few things you need to consider before buying it.  Think about this:  if the owner didn't have the money to pay for the car, did he/she have the money to keep up on the maintenance and fix the problems?  If you buy a repo car, see if you can get an extended warranty.  My car is a repo and I'm having many more problems w/ it than I had anticipated and I am sooooo glad that I got an extended warranty w/ $100 deductible because in the 6 months I've owned the car, it's gone to the shop almost every month since then for various little problems, and it still has some.

Just something to consider before buying the car.  And don't take the company seriously when they say "it still has a strong transmission"----have it checked out yourself.  They may be trying to scam you, like many salesman do.

I think you should go for that deal, no sunroof and no power windows (not sure if you have them or not) is a lot less weight. <img src="#/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> Look at it that way.

As Lauren said, get everything checked out and then buy the car, and DEFINITELY get an extended warranty.

I say go for it, other than having that SE badge on your car there isnt really a whole lot of difference. The four lug wheels are a very slight drawback. You will probably upgrade the stock suspension and put front and rear strut tower bars on anyway so the suspension really isnt so bad.
Unless you are really into bells and whistles, gotta have cruise control, sun-roof, and all that which does add weight.
Just make sure you have the car checked out by a mechanic you trust, and get the extended warranty <img src="#/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

i thought the 4 lug wheels were really bad, i still think 5 lug is more convenient, but i've seen some 16 X 8 and 16 X 7 rims for my car n that's all i really want neway.
