S30 dashboard conversion

I'm in the process of putting this s13 dash in my '78 280z, and although it's a fairly easy swap, I'm having trouble with wiring the s13 gauge cluster.

I've got the clock, turn signals, and backlights wired up to work, but the fuel gauge, temp gauge, and tach won't work.

The temp gauge is the only one that moves, but I suspect inaccuracy.

Anyone done this swap and has any suggestions? I'll eventually be swapping to all aftermarket gauges, but for now the stock cluster will have to work.

What are you doing for the speedo? Last time I checked the S30 trans does not have a VSS. there could be an obscure sensor out there that works, but I dont know of it. Unless of course your doing an engine swap and have the VSS with it.

Then there is the tach. You will have to do the modification that the RB S13 guys do to convert the tach to accept input from a 6cylinder vs the stock 4banger. That mod should be easy to find. Oh and I believe you will need to use a resistor to get the tach signal in order if you are using the l series ignition as the S13 uses a modified low voltage signal from the ECU to drive the tach. This isnt an issue with the RB swaps because they do the same thing. I had to convert that ecu tach signal to run my stock 260Z tach. I amplified the signal though. It should just be a simple inline resistor on top of the other mods you will have to do to convert over to a 6 cyl.

You will need to determine if the sending units for the fuel gauge even work the same. You may have to modify the signal or modify your sending unit to get it to work. The S13 and S30 temperature sending units are fairly close. I use an early S13 sending unit for my RB swap in my 260Z. The gauge is accurate enough.

Sorry If I have not added anything you did not already know.
As for specifics on wiring I dont have much. Sorry.

I may be way off with this next line of thinking so hopefully someone can fill in the blanks. The R32 gauge setups look very similar to S13. I bet the guts are interchangable. I was able to put the guts of an R32 gauge cluster into all the stock Datsun Z gauges... I did not end up using them, so they are sitting on my shelf.

I would highly suggest you registering on hybridz.org. There is a thread about wiring for s30's. That said, nissan loved to switch from negative pulse and positive pulse signals for the tach. So when I did my rb20det swap and went ahead and wired the tach for the RB harness the RB used a negative pulse where as the s30 used a positive pulse. Of course this is just the Tach. I'm sure there are other wire gurus who can help and point you out with the other stuff.
