RB25 Coolant Problem *Urgent*

I have an event this Saturday so this is very urgent. I installed the autometer water temp gauge with the powered by max adapter that goes on the radiator hose. The issue Is I'm not getting any readings. The gauge when switch on does the slight move showing that it works but when I run the motor the tach doesn't rise. I tried to bleed the system by jacking the front up about a foot and leaving the cap off the radiator but after ten minutes it boils over and vaporizes. I installed a new thermostat (mishimoto 160degree) and still nothing. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

How's the car running? Is it over heating?

As far the gauge it has to be wiring. Assuming it gets power and turns on it has to be the sensor or the placement.

Is the adapter earthed to ground ? I take it that this is one of those "in the middle of the hose" adapters ??

Is the sensor a two or a one wire sensor ?
If two, it should work. If one, ground the body of the adapter.

The gauge I believe is what you would call a 1 wire. Of course the gauge has its own ground that's inside the car, but there is only 1 wire going to the sensor/adapter.

Yes it is the adapter that goes in the middle of the hose. How would you ground the adapter ?

Attach an electrical wire to it by means of a threaded machine screw through an electrical crimp fitting and the other end to the engine .
Make sure there is very good continuity at the attachment points, ie: clean any paint etc off and attach to the clean bare metal. I believe it should be aluminum.

If its something like this in the link, you will see a screw shere the earth ot ground needs to be attached to...

You need to identify which exact gauge you purchased.

Is it electric?
Is it analog?

If by "one wire" you mean you can only see one but it's fixed to the gauge and it's kind of thick then you have a either a brake in the tube running from the sensor, or your gauge is out of calibration and needs to be replaced.

It's the autometer analog gauge.

Okay so it's all one piece, there's only going to be one "wire" going to the sensor. It's not exactly a wire though so there isn't reason to ground that sensor at the adapter.

Depending on how new/old that gauge face is, it could be damaged. Read up on how those mechanical gauges and faces work. It's a wound coil that operates the gauge face. heavy and direct vibrations can damage this and require it to be calibrated again.

I'd assume you've got some sort of flow problem here.

I've compiled a bit of a pro series questionnaire I'd like you to take some time and review.

Please take a minute or two and complete the survey so your issue can be better addressed.

Please note 2 I took the time to investigate this for you because I'm bored, don't take it personal if I don't return here to save the day.

Lets get the facts;

  • You have a mechanical gauge. so no additional grounding is needed for the probe.
  • You experienced boil-over, you have a flowing problem.
  1. Water pump
  2. Thermostat
  3. Blockage
  4. Belt slippage
  • YOU SWITCHED THE GAUGE???
What I want to know is, how exactly is this sensor positioned?



You mentioned your Tach, but I'm guessing you meant to say the temp level on the dash?



There's gaps in the information. Is the dash reporting the same as your aftermarket gauge?


Was this new, used? What's the exact model or picture of the exact one you have.


Was this issue around before you messed with the new gauge?


When was the last time the car was tinkered with?


Are the fans stock or electric add-ons?


How are the fans managed if electric?

If you did, did you install a toggle switch with an LED in it?


If you did, did you wire the three prongs in the correct order?


If you did, did you run the switch off a relay or off direct battery?


If off direct battery, did you think that would be a good idea?

I replaced the water pump with an OEM pump, I replaced the thermostat with the 160 degree mishimoto, blockage I guess could be possible just have no idea where since it's a brand new mishimoto rad and raw brokerage hoses. Belt slippage I doubt it, again brand new belt. I'm using the ARC 8000D so yes it is on a toggle. This is a strictly race car. So the dash doesn't work and so on.
