i don't know whether anyone has mentioned school, but you can try going back to tech school (or any school) to learn a new trade. maybe something that lets you work with your hands.

btw. get out and enjoy life with friends and family, and when getting up everyday is painful that is when you're painfull close to . . .

Ehhhh. I'm nto that good with dealing with depression. I dun got a car to drive yet. (Puttignback together SR now and Waiting for paint to finish) girls. ehhhh that only made it worse. there is something really wrong with me that has kept me from getting a girlfriend ever since I started trying. I use to be an Emo kid but I guess I grew out of it. so now I just Hang out with my Good Friends and try to forget about things. Usually Wrench on my car or someone elses car. (Usually Indolent's or Vinhisbored's car.) so for now the best way I deal with it is friends, Music, and Art. I draw alot as well. that;s just meh tho./

So this is a bump.

Seems like i've subdued one monster, and yet, another arises.

Moving and all that jazz and really having my family get started on their careers has kinda gotten to me. I'm 20, still fairly young, currently not attending school, just working, and living life.

I can honestly say i don't know what the hell my future holds. Its like, sometimes, things spark, but they fizz out. I aspire to do nothing i guess. Which is a really stupid thing, period.

I keep saying im going to start school, but the fact i don't know what the hell i wanna do as a career/for a future is holding me back. I think 'why go to school when you don't know what you're going for?' Its like driving without a destination.

Anyone else feel this way? The sad part of all this, is that i've been stuck in this rut for a long long ways. Advice? Tips? How you dealt with this?

Anything helps. Thanks.

I'm in the same exact position.

I went to college for about a year and a half. Then I realized I'm going absolutely nowhere.

so I stopped.

Went to a trade school. Got a Liscense to be a "engineer".
Got a job at a Hospital..and I've been here for almost 1.5years.

Sure, I tell myself all the time..go to school..be something 'else'. Something I really want to be. But that something doesn't exist. I never wanted to be an astronaut or a firefighter or anything like that when I grow up. So nothing sparks me today.

So here's what I'm doing. Stick with this job, which is not bad at all...$20+/hr and do whatever I want while having a 9-5. Basically all I really want is money..I don't have a passion on anything other than cars.

The way I see it, I'm only 22 and I have a lifetime ahead of me to figure out something.

I'm in the same situation.
Only I thought working on cars was something I'd like.
I hated my job, was depressed all the time by it, quit talking to people, quit having fun with my car, just slept, worked, and ate. I gained weight too.
Finally I had enough, and my mood had affected my job performance so much that I was about to be fired anyway, so I quit.
I have no money, no job prospects, an S14 that makes a new noise everyday, and I am running out of food.
I am also a very happy man ATM.

What seems to be working for me is to just get away from everything, grow a beard so to speak, and spend some time reflecting on things.
I am personally spending a lot of time working on my and my roomates project cars, and cleaning house, watching movies, etc.
It's given me lots of time to reflect on my general lot in life and how much I have fucked up in the past few years, and what I should start doing to correct those things.
Just getting my shit together and getting down to some serious thinking led me to the conclusion that I need to start working for myself and going back to school.
Will that plan work for me? I have no clue, but it seems to me that this part of life is when you're supposed to be figuring shit like that out.
It might take a few trys to find something that works, but when you do, you'll be miles ahead of someone who chooses incorrectly and sticks it out just because the money is good, or it's a nice sounding profession.

This quote has gotten me through quite a lot. Helped me get off my ass realizing that each day spent wondering what I should do was a day in which I could have actually done something.

I would say that if you don't know what you want to do, go to the bookstore or library. Read about what interests you, practice what interests you, and the rest will follow.

Dude your young still gots lots of time to figure that out. It would be worst if you were 28 and not know what to do next..like me =P Try reading up on different things and see what else interest you besides cars. I wanted to do something w/ cars cause I'm passionate bout it but I don't enjoy working on any other car besides my own, so I'm looking elsewhere but haven't found it yet! I did the technical school thing and got a computer job but I am so sick of computers...been at this job for 5 yrs and don't want to do it no more. It is comforatble though (working now) but I want to do more. I wish when I was younger I had figured this stuff out but it's hard. Like the guy above said don't waste time dwelling on the fact that you don't know what you want to do and take time to explore different things. Hopefully you'll find something that will inspire you..

I know were your coming from dude, big time. I was in a serious depression for a long time. I basically had to take things into my own hands, AND STOP BEING A PASSENGER IN MY OWN LIFE!

I worked for a furniture store for over 3 years. I started doing some furniture design for the owners. I was coming up with some awsome stuff and one of the beds that made it into production ended up in their commercials, in magazines, and featured at expo's. It also ended up becoming one of the best selling beds they ever had. Needless to say without any compinsation I felt I was getting anal raped. Meanwhile I went back to school for multi-media at age 25. i realized that I was being a tard doing this ish for free when I can make a career out of it (not furniture design particularly). I finally got enough balls to ask to be compinsated for my outstanding acheivements and THEY FIRED ME.

It ended up collecting unemplyement for 6 months. I had a really good time but went into a downward spiral of drunken carelessness. It got to the point were I'd get fit shaced hope in my car with a beer drive home and like a @sshole just whip the bottle out of the window like FTW.

I finally collected myslef and got job. Realized how wonderful my fiance (now wife) was and how much I had going for myself.

At this point I'm happier then I've even been in my life. My job is boring now, but I graduate next month and I have some things lined up. We bought a big ass house. My wife makes baller money and we're just happy being together.

Basically the moral of my story is (not that anyone read all that), STOP BEING A PASSANGER IN YOUR LIFE. Take control. Make goals and accomplish them one at a time.

I just wanted to let you know, I know where your coming form bro. Keep your head up.

I know how that is. So far i have dropped out of a university, community college, graduated with top honors from UTI, and worked in different fields, and now i don't know what will happen tomorrow. I'm only 21, so i still have good 2 years to figure out where i want to be, but others have already found it, so i feel like i got left behind. Now i work on cars to keep myself sane, and take pills keep me balanced. I can still see how bad it is, and i can only imagine how i would feel if without some extra help.

Find something you really enjoy and pursue it, even if it won't make you a millionaire. For me it was cars, but my body won't hold up for more than 5 years, and then i'll be poor and crippled. Maybe going back to school for something else i enjoy is the answer. One thing is for sure, moping and waiting will not get you anywhere. Pick a path and go - you will not get anywhere by waiting at the crossroads trying to make up your mind.

Depression is extremely tough to deal with. I used to have huge problems with it before, and still get relapses from time to time, although much more rarely and not as bad. A lot of it was because of college; I felt like I was in a rut, not even sure if i wanted to do what I was going to school for (although most students feel that way at some point).

The best way I could try to feel better was to bury myself in a hobby, which is why I got the 240 and spent like $6k on parts. Hobbies do help, but be careful of hobbies that are expensive or self-destructive. Having something to devote your time to that you are really passionate about is very helpful

The same goes for having a significant other, but you shouldn't get with some chick just cause you want someone. I kinda fell into my relationship last year, and now I'm happily engaged and very much happy with my life. Having someone that you can relate with and really enjoy their company can make a huge difference. Even good friends (for all the single people out there) make a huge difference. When i got depressed, I would call up old friends that I hadn't talked to in years and see whats up, hang out, or whatever. In any case, having people close to you can really help with you're down.

My last bit of advice in my ranting is this; sometimes you'll get depressed without a good reason. I still get depressed at times despite the fact that I have a very satisfying life...sometimes you have to remind yourself that your life IS good. you ARE much better off than a lot of people. No matter how bad things seem, if you remind yourself that life really is good, and that there are things worth living for, and looking forward to, you can work your way out of it.

Maybe what I said made little sense, or has already been said enough times to lose meaning, but I feel like I owe it to a senior member (and all around good guy) of our little piece of the internet to put in my two cents. Good luck dude...

I feel the same way. I am about to start my second year in college and I have no idea what I want to do. I have talked to just about every advisor my school has and it has got me nowhere. I hate school with a passion but it just feels like now days you can't get anywhere without it. I just keep telling myself that I will take general classes that I need to get out of the way for my degree first and I will figure out the rest later but eventually that isn't going to work. I just try not to think about what's coming next. I set short term goals and do my best to accomplish them.

go take some GE in college and use their career center. they should able to help you out to find out your interest and career path. if you can't figure out anything, just get a whatever bachelor degree and apply government jobs such as post office, department of argiculture, or FBI

You young guys need to relax a little bit about your future. It'll come to you. There should be a point in your life were you don't know WTF your gonna do. It takes time. Not everyone knows what they wanna be when they grow up.

It took me til I was 25 to figure out what I want to do when I grew up.

Slow down. You guys are way to young to be "DEPRESSED". I know Im a "NOOB" on your website here but I think I got a few years on most of you guys. Lifes [email protected]#%ed, it will crush you........ if you let it. Im guessing you cats are in your early 20's. By 23 i had taken a bullet, been locked up, no chick I knew wanted to be around me, my list of friends was getting smaller everyday(for different reasons). Then at 23 I watched my mom die. Skip to now, Im 31 and Ive learned its MY LIFE and Im responsible for what happens to it. My advice, dont ever fight with your family, try not to fight with your girl(or guy) and keep your worrering down to a minimum, because at some point you learn its pointless. Stop thinking about it ...do something about it.

As far as a job, go down to your JC and inroll in welding courses. get certified. Great money, many different job opportunities. Thank me later.

Yeah, this is what I do to treat random spurts of depression.

-Drugssssssss. Try and find buddies to throw down with you/hook you up though, it can get expensive.
-Not caring. Seriously, who fucking cares? I don't.
-Pick up girls. Go up to 15 year olds and say "hey, you're hot" and just go from there.
-Writing music. Go pick up a bass or a guitar or some drums. Lyrics usually are a good way to get made fun of.
-Go fast, live free.

Ironically, what I do to when depressed is much like what I do when content with life.

Life is a complicated generator with patterns, yet is very sporadic.

When you're breaking down a mathematical equation, you simplify.

When you do that, shit gets easier and shit gets solved.

So why not apply the same logic to life?

I take a look at an enemy's myspace, find the best picture of them, and stare at it for 10 seconds, and then laugh. After that I realize how awesome I am and am ready to combat life's tough times.
