These day true show cars only have about 2-3 coats of clear. originally they may have put on around 7-8 coats but they do it in stages where they keep on color sanding it into finer grits till the clear perfectly flat as glass. I've done this on one qp to experiment. It works but alot of $ and time. |

Looks decent... But for $500 bucks I'd rather take the shit to Earl Scheib and have them do the work. I did that on my 240, the paint job came out great, it was a 24 hour turn around, and it came with a lifetime warranty.
$500 = metallic paint (black with gold pearl)/ color change of door jambs, trunk jamb, underside of trunk lid, etc, everthing but engine bay. Shitty pic. But you get the idea.

500 bucks. That's about the same as going to Maaco and having them do it.
Your call though. Looks awesome btw.

and you dont get the honor of saying you did it yourself. +maaco is not going to do a better job than you are. As for myself, I rather learn how to do things on my own. Painting is really time consuming and this is why shops charge so much. The paint process is the easiest part. Stop rattle canning your cars. They look like garbage. I use cheap guns and get great results. This gun is from harbor freight and for the standard gravity feed gun is $14.99 WTF. The HVLP gun runs $49.99. I use the gravity feed for primer and the HVLP for base / clear. I do get great results, but with any DIY garage job there will be some imperfections that will have to be sanded and buffed out. Another $250 dollard job. This materials, primer, reducer, paint. Single stage white: first car I ever painted. I first rattle canned it $65 dollards and after coming out like shit I went out and bought single stage paint for $100 and it came out like this. And here is the latest car I painted. You can also see my fan set up. I usually install an ac filter to aid in overspray. I also use 10x20 drapes from lowes paint department.

I have a detached garage FTW!!!!!!
I dont think the fumes will creep that much into the house. Using an HVLP gun will minimize lots of over spray also. Try to use some kind of fan to move the fumes outside of the space you are working in. I decided to go this route because it was better than spray paint, I can change colors when ever i wanted, fix driftscars, and learn something new.

when i painted in my garage the fumes didnt penetrate the house. Also if you leave the bottom of your garage door open and then open the outside access door open it makes a weak cross draft booth.
Paint fumes are heavier than air so they sit on the ground and accumulate. Be sure to turn off your water heater and clothes dryer if its in the garage, you dont want any fires! |

I use 2 kerozyne heaters for pre-warm up. I cant remember the BTU's I use, but I pre heat the garage for an hour. Turn them off when I start spraying and then turn them back on when I'm done. I just finished my last car and it came out great for 40 degree weather. I'm done unttil it gets hotter though. I painted a few cars and all of the sudden I had people asking me to spray their cars. A little side money doesnt hurt

idealy u you want around 70-80 degree's with zero humidity but yeah u might want something to heat up the garage. At 40 degrees your paint will be hella cold and so would the surface of the metal of the car. Youll have a good chance of running the paint or not letting it flash off enough to where your gonna trap solvents in between coats and have issue down the road. I would get like 2 10,0000 btu heaters and if u can control the temp of the garage. If your lucky get another like oh idk 30-40,0000 btu and when u are done painting bake that garage upto 130 degree's. Your paint will cure in about 20-35min lol.
as for the fumes they shouldnt get into the hosue unless u have vents or ducting that goes inside the house or ur house is so old that they sneak through all the cracks. Get an intake somewhere to bing in fresh air and an exhuast to keep the fumes/over spray away from the car and you. yuris made a good point on the heater and everything. Turn those off or could possibly blow ur urself in there or have a flash fire. another thing is try to get explosion proof lights. The fumes can ignite from those too. and if u cant do anything of this then ask around u and see if someone will rent you out a paint booth and make sure its heated so u can control the weather.Fortunely i have access to one booth thats a cross draft for pretty much free but in the winter i dont like it and i have access 3 down draft booths. 2 are infrared heated and 1 is force heated with a furnace. |
