A 29-year-old San Francisco man was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Don Morrissey said. A second bicyclist was airlifted to Stanford Medical Center and the third was taken by ground to the medical center, according to Morrissey.
Both are in critical condition, he said.
Preliminary reports from the California Highway Patrol indicated that two people were killed after the accident, however the sheriff's office and medical examiner's office both confirmed that only one person died as a result of the crash.
"The entire agency is deeply saddened by this tragic incident,'' said Morrissey. "Our thoughts and prayers are with family of the victim and everyone involved.''
The CHP is investigating the crash and the deputy will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

it seems that he wasnt even on a call, probably just doing the normal cop thing - cruising along at 20mph over the limit running reds.

This is very odd. Just last week, two SF cops crashed into a liquor store:

Two San Francisco police officers received minor injuries early Saturday when their patrol car crashed into a storefront in the Crocker Amazon neighborhood.

Officers Roger Morse and Nicholas Suslow had been responding to an assignment near the corner of Geneva Avenue and Vienna Street around 3:30 a.m. when their car slammed into a light pole, a tree, and the front of a liquor store before coming to rest on the sidewalk, according to San Francisco police Lt. Frank Lee.

The light pole in turn shattered the window of a second-floor apartment, narrowly missing a crib with a sleeping baby.

"I think it was just the weather and the speed," said Lee. "The cause of the accident is still under investigation and hasn't been determined."

imho, because of the nature of their jobs police officers are open to things like this. It just sometimes seems that they're too busy doing other things, such as typing in license plates, answering their radio, observing traffic, etc) to pay attention to driving safely. This is a really sad story.

no news on how fast the cop was going. Had to AT LEAST be going 35 to kill someone. But honestly, what kind of chances did the bikes have? I forgot, are the laws to ride against or with traffic?

They were responding to a call of an elderly man being beaten on a muni bus. I'd drive fast for that one, too.

What some people don't understand is police vehicles on public streets do pose a serious threat. They do get CHP'd in to arrive to a scene and shit. Some cops do take advantage of the authority they have over civilians, and always smash around town 24/7. It's a sad thing to hear about...but I'm sure the family's of the victims will be getting cashed out fat.

the cop gets put on blast by the media, big deal.

a normal civilian would be in jail right now.

the police officer is on paid administrative leave.

sounds like a good deal for the cop.

NO amount of money car affect how KILLING someone on accident can affect someones life. The cop doesn't have a good deal at all. Who knows, if he needs counseling it will cost him thousands.

fact is the cop is in a better position than a civilian in the same situation.

a civilian may also "need counseling" if he/she were in the same situation so i don't see how that disproves my statement that the cop has a damn good deal.

that sucks.. as much as i dislike some cops.. this accident is clearly the fault of that perticular officer.. Hopefully freak accidents like this wont happen again. AND I WOULD HATE TO HEAR THE DEPARTMENT TRY TO COVER UP THIS ACCIDENT.

This incident gives cops bad names and fuels people to hate them more.

Which is what usually happens. I see police officers hit their siren just to cross a red light most of the time. One time they stopped my friend and i for 3hrs, guns drawn because they suspected us to have guns in the vehicle. They had helicopters and 8 patrol cars surrounding us. I was freakin' scared i can tell you that much.

I also see many MANY police officers driving while talking on their cell phone. IDK but i believe operating a vehicle while on a cellular device became illegal this year.
