So recently, a newb on my local forum posts and he's a former Oki native with close ties to Kadena and such. I ask him about drifting up there as I could possibly be PCS'ing there this year and he proceeds to break my heart with this:

For you guys who've been stationed there before, what's your experiences with this?

How hardcore are they about this? What're some of the stories you've heard?

Which tracks/events do they deem "safe" to attend and participate?

Anykind of info would be awesome. I really don't want to get my hopes up and get there to find out I could lose my career for the main reason I wanted to go for in the first place.

Thanks for any input guys.

Being worried about my career isn't what I'd call being full of retard.

I'd go without heartbeat for just the experience, I hate the base I'm stationed at now. I've also asked a bunch of friends who've gotten stationed out there what they've heard about it.

A couple of other questions, do you know which tracks/events they consider safe or unsafe?

Also, what's the policy about bringing cars back to the states? I wanna bring back one for track purposes because I know its near impossible to legalize them here, so just to have one for events back here would be awesome.

You can do RCCA events, gymkhana, etc. Like I said, just don't go bragging/ talking about it around your command and you'll be fine. Plenty of Air Force cats do events at Nago and the like.

Seriously Okinawa was one of the best experiences of my life, i love and miss oki so much i wish i could go back almost everyday, literally, and i went over there as a boot Marine
If your going over there as a Air Man theres a damn car you rate in your orders from what my ex showed me; As for drifting, just go over there and youll see for yourself how people conduct themselves and youll fall underneath them

I've heard similar things from some of the former guys I've worked/ went to school with who're there now.

They pretty much said people still do it, but Misawa and Yokota don't really care. Pretty weird how Kadena is the only one that cares. Any of you guys have experiences with Yokota or Misawa?

As far as I know, when I got back stateside, my family was allowed to bring back one vehicle FREE. We got a LHD Benz E320 brought back. I think it's limited to vehicles that can be legalized stateside aka no skylines, etc.

People won't even entertain the idea of shipping shit State side unless you buy it from Exchange Car Sales but that's only because they sell USDM cars, not JDM cars.

It can be done but if you have to ask about it then chances are you don't have the money to do so/ don't know the people to do make it happen. It's expensive. Like around 10-12 grand expensive.

I planned on taking my car with me in the first place just to have immediate transportation. I'll ask a friend of mine here about how his process worked, he just had a JZX90 imported here.

Do many people get their American cars shipped there? I assume its a bit awkward though, like have a right hand drive car here. Shitty U-turns and you can't really go through drive throughs.

Well we lived on mainland (NAF Atsugi) so I dont know if the duty station made a difference. We were also Navy so I dont know if that will make a difference either. But we came back stateside around September/October 04 and brought the Benz with us. IIRC my dad said we got it shipped here for free courtesy of military.

Oh yea, we bought the benz from a Japanese off base dealer as well.

I'm assuming you're going to Okinawa only. On the mainland, there were maybe a handful of USDM cars on base but mostly everyone purchases a Japanese car. Hell, used japanese cars are dirt cheap. My 92 Civic SIR was only 650 dollars when I got my first car there in like 02/03.

The majority of Mercs are DOT complying cars.. If you can prove your car is DOT compliant and is on the list then the military will ship it for free however now days it seems impossible and in most cases isn't worth the try.

They have to pass the same inspection JDM cars do. Just some shit has to be changed out like headlamps and stuff.

That "policy" was created by an idiot out to get promoted. Best thing to do when you get over here, is have fun at events that take place up at nago circuit, and the bullring (the closest thing to a course we have on island) and any other business of yours that involves cars, keep it to yourself and keep it safe!!

And why bring your car over here. Follow the advice of others on this site, and buy some cheap car over at kadena, have your fun and leave it, when you leave oki!

I was under the impression the military would ship a car with me for free if I'm going there. Like you and the others are saying, there's some USDM cars there.

A friend of mine who just got to Kadena was saying that the commander there is supposedly retiring in a month or so. Policy change ahead? Who knows.

My car is paid off, so if I can bring it with me for free, then why not? I'd get some killer deals on parts, then take it back home with me when I shipped back to the states. But who knows, I'd be super tempted to get a FD, S15 or a super cherry S30 if the chance presented itself. Either way, I still want my car and I'd look into pricing probably storing it if they say no no to me bringing it with me.

As for afsc, 2W1, weapons/armament on A10s. I put in for the post office job that's open up there in Kadena and Misawa lol. Long fucking shot I know, but Misawa has F16s and I forget what Yokota has, but as long as there are jets living at those bases I could potentially switch airframes, which would be awesomeeeee.

Yeah, in the fucking States.

They imported more S30s to the US then they made for Japan. S30s are rare as hell and even more so in good condition not to mention highly desired. In Japan they are a $30k+ car for one that was well maintained. You could prolly find a rust bucket for around 10k though...

Buy some $500 POS and wait till you find what you want. You buy the first JDM car you see and you'll get ripped off and it'll be a POS.

Get the idea of shipping a car out of your head. If it was so easy there'd be people importing left and right but it isn't easy and it's expensive as fuck and it's not worth it. The EPA WILL FIND YOUR CAR AND THEY WILL EXPORT OR CRUSH IT.

There's a dude in Okinawa who got a WRX STI E plated, it cost him 6 grand for the work to get the car converted to JDM standards plus whatever it cost him to get the car shipped from Texas which was I believe 5 grand...

10 grand more and I can go to Type One in Tokyo and buy a N2 spec DC5R

I'm already on a pretty shitty flightline, it can't get worse...right?! LOL

Well I already have a decently modded S14 and the plan was to just take it with me and add on to it. But if it costs so much that pretty just backs me into a corner to have to just sell it.

That's nuts about S30's though, I had no idea. But its just really gonna suck ass if I go over there and get a super nice car and in the back of my mind knowing I'll have to get rid of it without a choice.
