SR20 Feels Restricted?!

Swapped my S13 about 1 month ago and it pulled pretty good imo, but on my way home it felt hesitant. It would pull hard for one second then the next it felt held back. I replaced the MAF with a brand new one and it stopped sputtering but it still felt like something was holding it back and even tho I have only put 200 miles on it and never drive it I was coming to terms with maybe I was just used to driving it. Well today I got it out and downshifted to 3rd and mashed it and it pulled hard for a split second then went back to feeling held back again. Also when I start it up it has a really low idle like it wants to die and I have tried adjusting my IACV and I cannot get it right for the life of me. Brand new MAF, checked timing, checked vacuum and basically outta idea. Any help or ideas is appreciated!

-Greg

Did you check spark plugs, coilpacks?

Jw is it boosting slower than usual, or un even boosting (sometimes 7psi sometimes 4)
If so check the wastegate to make sure its not sticking.

Could be the turbo as well.

List of engine mods?

(had similiar issues when my turbo was failing on my first turbo)

well your right man, i disconnected the actuator today and the wastegate door is sticking open. when i move it back and forth it sticks sometimes and other times it doesn't. anyway to fix this without getting a new turbo?

get a new actuator, or maybe its sticking at the other end of the turbo, take off the turbo elbow, and clean it up a bit, it might be sticking due to carbon build up

you might be able to clean it (internally) but I have no idea how. As far as the outside moving parts, I'd spray some.... uhh carb cleaner, should clean up any gunk buildup. I'd get a new wastegate, you don't need to buy a whole new turbo. Everyone seems to like the HKS.

well i thought it was the actuator at 1st, then when I took my old one off I started messing with the wastegate door and realized that is what is sticking not the arm...just hoping i can figure out a way to clean that without being a huge pita.

took off the elbow and the wastegate seemed to be totally fine but I cleaned it anyway. any other ideas, it's very annoying driving a boosted car that feels like it has no power. if i had a boost leak would it possibly not be noticeable? other then having a low idle at start it drives great other then it doesn't pull like it did right after the swap.

thinkin it maybe a fuel issue, checked the plugs yesterday and they were a little white. filled it up today for the 1st time sense it had been swapped a few weeks ago and it finally ran like a raped ape so i think i am going to buy a new fuel pump and maybe FPR.

yea i timed it right after i dropped it in. i thought it was fuel related so i bought a brand new walbro and fuel filter and it didn't change a thing. started thinking a coil pack maybe failing so i tossed in 4 new plugs, 4 new coil packs and a new ignitor and still runs like shit. starts up and idles just fine and drives alright other then it sputters and feels restricted and has no power. thinkin maybe a bad FPR and it's getting too much fuel and boggin down but my exhaust ain't smokey or anything.

It's not the turbo, it's hitting 7lbs and roughly 15lbs vac so I have no leaks there. Basically outta ideas just pisses me off that its as slow as my single cam ka that was in it.

Between your MAF and your turbo inlet, there is a rubber hose or pipe, that is stock from JDM engine kit, if you still have this, make sure the rubber inlet hose has the factory brass or metal spring inside of it. If it does not, then your engine will suck the hose closed on itself under load causing this issue.

Still cannot figure it out. New ignitor, coilpacks, plugs, MAF, fuel pump and injectors and still feels like it's being held back. It has sounded like a subaru a few times so I still think it's a fuel issue but I could be totally wrong. Boost gauge is hitting 7 lbs at WOT and 20lbs at closed so I have no leaks and the ecu is still not throwing any codes. Car idles just fine so could it really be a coolant temp sensor? Trying to get it right by the end of summer, so I appreciate the help.

Yea man, my intake is a solid piece from the MAF to the turbo so it really doesn't apply to me.

you may be right but it's not my turbo. like I said my boost gauge is never anything different then 7lbs so I'm positive the problem is elsewhere. There a specific sensor that could have taken a shit on me that would cause it to run like this but throw no codes?

Did you check the turbo for shaft play?

You said you have a boost gauge, does the boost gauge reflect this lack of power?

it's got a little play but what used turbo doesn't? the gauge is fine, 20lbs vacuum when throttle is closed and its never been anything different then 7lbs WOT. It's not a turbo issue and it can't be a fuel or ignition issue because i have replaced every part of both and it has made no difference. Best way to describe it is the car just feels held back. Car drives and idles fine it just feels like something is preventing the car from unleashing.

Ecu throws no codes so I have no idea what it could be. Car ran flawless the first 2 days and now something is stopping it from ripping like it should. Everything checks out to be ok, so I'm not sure if their is a specific sensor or what that makes it slow.

I'm having the exact same problem in mine but I'm at 10.5 psi with my t25. I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread.

voltage is roughly 12.1 volts so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue. It's basically boosting but has no power.

Are you putting 91 octane in it? To me it sounds exactly like your still running 87 octane...you can't do that with SR's...if you still have 87 in it, throw in a buncha octane booster and only put in 91 from now on.
