cage looks good, TIG ftw. Next cage try to work on creating nodes with the joints vs. staggering them. Like your door bars, the top tube should come up to the harness bar and the lower should join the main hoop at your diagonal. Statically it makes for a overall stronger system when it comes to force distribution. Cant see your rear legs off the main hoop, but they should be the same way, inline with your A pillar bars. Just something I have picked up on from very good cage builders. Please dont take it as knocking your work, cause I know first hand that TIG ing a cage is not the easiest thing to do. kyle |

Starting my v-mount on my 240 And my first time getting down and dirty with aluminum welding and it came out great. Im using a aftermarket evo intercooler so I only had to re-make one end tank. Iphone pics sucks.

Just wanted to get peoples opinions on the Lincoln Weld-Pak 180HD(Lincoln 180HD). I don't have any welding experience and I'm looking for a good welder to begin with. Is the 180HD any good? or are there any recommendations for a welder? I wanna do basic stuff like piping, gusseting, ect... Thanks for the help.

Well here is an S14 I did over the weekend. The last time I worked on this car I was welding the front half of his kouki red S14 to the back wrecked chassis of my brother. Now it came back for more. Jarrod stripped it and prepped it, the I spent Saturday and Sunday fabbing this cage up. Nothing fancy just a simple 4 pointer with door bars and some clean fitment. I didn't feel like making gussets so the cage is just welded straight to the chassis
and before anyone asks, yes the door bars were welded a full 360 degrees, and then welded directly to the B pillar. Here is my favorite shot; The whole deal is 1.75" DOM 0.095 with boxed chassis pads at all 6 points of contact. Bending was done on my home brew bender and glued together with my Millermatic 211 |

i'll be doing my 6 pt cage in class soon, i will mig most of it, but may tig a little bit to show my skills (for future employers) i really do like tig welding, but it is just going to be a track/weekend car, so tig isn't needed and mig's faster.

I wish I had only HALF the fab skills most of you have in this thread, if so I would be on my way to my dream build.

Luke that manifold looks legit as fuck, what's it coated with? Did you have to do the collector yourself?
I'm sure you offer high-temp ceramic coats/etc as an option, is that what that is? Lol Red Bull cannon rounds up all the cops for like a mile radius... thing sounds like a Abrams tank's big gun.

I don't really see the cost to performance benefit for a twin scroll manifold. The difference is minor if you are under 500 hp.
The manifolds are not coated. They are cleaned with a special chemical to remove all contaminates. When you are worried about the manifolds lasting a life time you need to remove any contamination from the metal itself. Even ink from a sharpie marker pen, or oil from the welding table that the manifold was sitting on can cause cracking over time.

So i've decided to try my hand at cage building. I got my JD2 model 3 in last week and made a stand for it today.
so far i have, -model 3 -1 5/8 die set - stand Do you experienced jungle gym fabricators have and tips or tricks for a first time cage makers? Anything you wish you would have done or should not have done? Also any suggestions on tubing notchers, i was leaning towards the JD2 "notch master" Pics of stand |

Nice stand! Planning you cage very carefuly will make a big difference in how it comes out. Don't try to make your notches in one try...better to go back and notch a little more than get another piece of tube.

I know none of my stuff is amazing but just thought I'd share what I have been practicing in class.
This is just some oxy without filler just making the pool, I got an A on this. First shot with filler. I know very sloppy but it was my firs time.

Get Bendtech software, it will make your tubes fit like a pro from the start. And like Jonnie said, cut tubes about an inch or so long and slowly work your way down. If you have a good eye and can use a cut off wheel like a surgeon you have no need for a notcher.

I currently have the luxury of using an abrasive chop saw... I hate it in every way. Not ideal at all...
Band saws work fine with the right blades... Last edited by atutt; 02-26-2010 at 11:12 PM.. |

I have both chop saw and metal band saw and neither seemed to like 304 stainless one bit. With the chop saw I just kept melting the nickle and then it would work-harden and I wouldnt get anywhere, and the band saws HSS blades would just loose all the teeth. I ended up cutting it with a hack saw and a tungsten-carbide blade which totally sucked and took 30 minutes to do one cut on 3" tubing.
I think I'm going to try a silican-carbide cutting disk in the chop saw and see how that works. |
