How to distinguish R180 and R200

Apart from the 5 or 6 bolts half shaft, how can I tell the difference between the R180 and R200?
Thanks for any help.

actual size difference in the pumpkin, and R200's came in a variety of different output shafts depending on the year made, 5 and 6 bolt. .
R200's have been being manufactured since the end of the 70's. The only thing you will find R180's in is 240z's and Suburu's. All Z cars after the 280z(R190) came stock with R200 diffs. As did any RWD IRS multi link suspension car that Nissan built.

yes, I know my Nissan's . That Japanese spec 180sx did not come with a R180 the R180 is a very old differential. Like I said earlier Nissan has been installing R200's in all their RWD IRS cars since the end of the 70's. Now it having a R200 does not mean automatically that it has a VLSD or LSD.

Thats not true....

The R180 can be found all the way up to the 280zx in 1983.
Subaru uses the R160 most commonly and in later years use the R180 and R200.
The Nissan 280z never got a R190 it was either a R180 or R200.

but still, it applies for my 180sx that it should have a R200 stock, right?
just to make sure so that I am sure that I can fit my HLSD in.
Thanks for the info again.

^^^ To make it simple...EVERY S13/S14 came with an R200...including your 180SX.

Some had 5-bolt output shafts, most have 6-bolt. Stock ratios are typically 4.08 or 4.36 (yours is probably the 4.36).

I did a quick measure on the diff last night, it's only about 18cm in length from left to right on the rear cover. And I just bought a S15 diff, it looks bigger than the one i've got under my car.
Don't know whether it's a visual difference, or it's really a smaller type R180 diff.

you know what , your wrong , I pulled R200's out of 1981 280zx's. Nissan did stop putting R180's in the cars after the 260z you can argue with me all you want I owned the cars and used to set them up. I would be willing to bet you were either in diapers at that point in life or not even born.

You want to bet there are r180's in the 280zx? all the automatics came with a 3.545 R200 upto 1983.
The 280z Had either a r180 for the auto or R200 in the 5 speed.

Before you play the old man do some research. This topic is widely covered on all Z forums. Ohh wait let me guess non of those guys know anything because they aren't uber elite like you, right?

And I can show you my two 280z that Have both the r180 and r200.... Also I've got a buddy with a non-turbo auto 280zx with a r180. The R190 you speak of was never put in any Z car except the 432R (which is truely a R192).

I took some pictures of the diff last night, and had a close look at it.
I believe that I've got a R180 in there. I've actually got a s15 r200 beside the car, I can see that the r200 is much bigger, beefier.

Here's the link to the pics.

I think the R180 looks ancient, different rear cover shape.

But I (think I) know it's the ring gear diameter. Measure it.

that's why i'm asking if this diff was one or not. about to pull the trigger and buy it. since i can't measure it. if it turns out to be a R180 i can always sell it to the 280z guys. but the difference is the shape of the diff. looks more like a R200 as well as the rear cover.

Oh, I assumed you had access to it.

If I just saw that in a pile of random manufacturer diffs, I'd assume it was an r200.

That looks like a S13 4.08 R200 diff.

The ears on the R180 stick out more because of how narrow the whole pumpkin is.

Oh, and FYI for the info in earlier posts, non-turbo S13 & S14 cars did come with R180 diffs. Not sure if it was only the Euro cars or what, but it's wrong to assume all s-chassis cars came with R200 diffs.
