Enough about that, what 240falkon said is true for him and is sage advice. With that said I will relate my own feelings and story. I got my first car when when I was 17 two weeks later I wrecked it, lol. A 65 Ford Mustang, wrapped around a telephone phone due to a foolish maneuver of a immature kid i.e. I. I actually learned a lot from that. I bought that car myself from selling my Pro Italian racing bike. I was into long distance bike riding before cars. Yes the bikes went by the wayside after I got into cars till around 8 or nine years later. My second car was a Datsun 510 4 door. It was lowered and went around corners like nobody's business. It also had Terrible Continental Contact tires on American Racing Libre wheels. This was the start of a valuable education for me I have no regrets about. I really learned to drive in this car and my third car a 69 Datsun 510 2 door. I drove these cars relatively stock for about a year. I sold the 4 door dirt cheap, banged up. hahahhahha I bew the headgasket on the 2 door. I wound up getting a loan from my mother and rebuilding and pumping out the engine top to bottom. I learned how to do clutch jobs(when I got the 4 door I had never driven a clutch, I learned.) Everytime it rained we went out and got sideways. We went to the hills and drove the canyons. We were kids, going to the track was not available. Except to go to Seca and Sears Point to watch. I digress though, I went to Auto tech at the end of High School. The thing is working on cars did not wreck my life it did through me off track. I actually moved up to owning my own Japanese engine and transmission business. I did music stuff as well though not as much as car stuff at that time. I always did Music, I always did cars. I also moved up in cars into 240Z's. The only regret from all of that I ever had was selling off all my 240Z's thinking I would find one later after I had closed my Engine and trans business do to changing markets. Funny thing is I remember people feeling in the early 80's that smog laws and police cracking down on 510 drivers was the end of the scene as we knew it. LOL Does that sound familiar? Never sell American spirit and Hot Rodding short. Where we feel its over or ended, others will find new ways and cars. 14-15 I was already dreaming about playing with cars. 17 I was playing with cars. Here I am today still fucking with cars. LOL its fun, its annoying, its costly, its a life experience. The OP probably should just hang tight. Save some money. Work, study, get a stock car when you get your license. Learn to really drive, drive it mostly stock, get a year or two actual experience in before going down the road of modifications. You might find this is not the platform you want to play with. You may find other interests that are more important. If not study and learn how to work on your car. Knowledge is the key. It can help you immensely if you can learn and not ask stupid questions on the internet, asking people to hold your hand. You will find out soon enough if its something your really into or a passing fad or whim for you. Playing with cars, building them and whatnot is not for everyone. To many people today get into because its cool and not because they are mechanically capable or even wish to have the technical knowledge. This has to be something you desire to do, because it actually interests you. If you lose interest? Forget it get out. I am addicted to playing with cars, its in my blood as is Music. Some call it a waste of money a waste of time. If it gives you any satisfaction whatsoever its not! Think about it.

Age shouldn't matter when it comes to being a car enthusiast. I've been into Datsun/Nissans since I was in high school. I used to drive a 1971 Datsun 510 with a dual carbureted NAP-Z motor to school. The NAP-Z 2.4 was Nissans motor that was a 4 cylinder with 8 spark plugs. That thing was fassssssst......
I'm in my 30's now and still go to 240 meets because I own 2 240's, a 1998 and a 1992 hatch. Usually I'm one of the older guys there, but who cares. I also own a 1973 Datsun 510 and when I go to 510 meets I am right in the middle of the age group and fit right in. One thing I have noticed is that the condition/quality/performance of someone's car is directly proportional to their age. Usually because the older guys are more established with regards to career and lifestyle because we have more liquid assets to support our hobby. Just bring what you have and enjoy yourself among fellow car enthusiasts. |

What most people should understand would be that he already has his mind made up. Us disencouraging him to not buy a car, will make him want one even more. Seeing things that you cant have either motivates you to get them, or crushes you, and forces you to move on. Either way, its better to steer him in the right direction, rather then push him over a cliff and tell him that buying an S-chassis will get you AIDS.
Just like what drift freaq said, i agree completley. A hobby is always so much more then what it seems on the outside, just make sure you dont make the common first mistake of being anxious and buying a rusted to shit/barley running crap box with no windsheild and bald tires lol. |

Really drive a stock 240 before you start modifying it. I'm glad I did it, the 240 is not really for me though. Now I have a nice unmolested, perfect car to sell as well.

just get the car, do the small things to it, read the manual, do some research. get your license drive it, think of what you don't like and change it. don't rush anything, it takes the fun out of it.

Seriously If i wasnt so into cars i'd be so much better off in life. I bought a s13 when I was 16 years old with my own money of course it was fun but mostly a pain in the ass then I was able to sale it for more than i got it for luckly 1.3k profit Then i bought a lexus when i was 17 and i am already on my second one. SC300 are freaking awesome anyways. Trust TRY your best to not get into cars they'll ruin your life.. They will consume your time, make you broke than you should be. I would say start getting into cars when you have a steady pay cause i dont have a steady pay its pretty hard to fix your car without a pay. My brother was the one who got me into cars he had 5 240sx and 300z pretty awesome when I sat in his car and felt boost. Thats what made me want to get into cars, if none of your family members have experience on working on cars then dont do it. Have you ever wonder why so many people try to sell their cars for college funds, they blew it all on their car already and are trying to make their money back. Just think about it. Then again your already on this forum and I think it might be a little too late to back out Plus when i went to a lexus meet i was the youngest guy there! Education>cars Better education = better cars |

Do it! I wish I would of started when I was 14! Just take your time on it and use your money responsibly on it as time goes on and eventually it will be exactly what you want.
Still get education and everything but why not start now and take your time while your in school too and get ahead. I would never wait years until I was done school to do a passion I love. I can do both at the same time. Go for it just don't be stupid about it.

dude, if your 14 or 15 years old, and you wanna do it, do it, but the best way to do it is
get a job while you have 0 expenses 0 expenses= 100% expenses to car 100% expenses to car=done faster then alotta mother fuckers that waited and end up sellin their shit cause they have too many expenses at the time they decided to make a project. its very simple DO WORK SON! |

haha yeah you"ll realize that, im 16 and bought my first s13 when i was 14. Things i thought about and did to the car when i was 14 are totally different to what my plans are now. i just finished my sr swap with no help from my parents in the money aspect, just alot of support. it keeps you/well me outta trouble but takes alot of time away from your social life if you really get into a project. i just think its up to you and what kinda person you are.

start when you can buy your own insurance.
if i could do it all over again, i wouldn't get into cars cause there is so much that i really want but can't afford at the moment and the ideas will drive you crazy. dude ur 14, you could fuckin start a band or something, do good in school, make decent money, then the girls will jock ur decent salary, and finally you'll have lived a decent life. cars are for hot dogs on a stick and sausages. lol, but once you can afford your own insurance and you still like 240s then come back here!
