Well I was driving in traffic today in 5th gear, like normal, not abusing it or anything. I try to down shift to slow down but all it will do is go into neutral and back into 5th. When in neutral it works fine. But it will only stay right under 5th, it will not move side to side. And I can also put it back in 5th and it responds properly. So I removed the shifter to see if I could see anything binding on the linkage. I didn't see anything that looked odd. I have tried moving the shifter both while the engine is running and while it is off. Just feels like something is binding. Any ideas?

Sounds like synchros to me, which allows gears to get into other gear.... Sounds like a rebuild or get another one.

kinda sounds like your "Lock Out" is stuck
But thats kinda only for reverse...

anyway S&G there should be a shifter latch thingy on the tranny held in by 2X 10mil bolts (looks like a tesnsioner Oval Shaped) pop it out and see if it will let you shift freely?

might lose oil so be prepared

kinda sounds like you were dirving with no tranny fluid, and some stuff seized up.

similir situation, happend to my friend, he was driving in 4th back to his house when all of a sudden he couldnt shift outta 4th. flat towed it to my boys house down the block went to drain the tranny befor removing it and it was empty, took it apart all of the synchros on the 3rd and 4th gears were siezed.
