s14 ka24de swap into s13 issues

so i got a vert shell and is a 5 speed swapped. installed an obd1 s14 ka24de motor.i finally got it to crank and run. but runs really rough and alotsof popping noises.(out of timed) i swapped the distributor and had everything lined up as per write ups and specs on the interwebs. i know its out of time. i spent all day yesturday trying to resolve the issue. so this is what ive done. i set the crank pulley on tdc and aligned the distributor according to specs. it cranked and voila! RUNS. but really really rough. and loud pops. kept setting crank pulley on tdc and aligning the distributor.(was making sure i wasnt a tooth or more off) 5 hours went by,and still the same issue.finally set the crank to stock ka24de timing 20*btdc(very first notch on the right, when facing the crank pulley) and runs so much better. its way better before but it idles high and still has popping noises. its very little now and not as loud. still off a tooth? any suggestions? thanks

Why was the timing messed with on the motor after it was pulled??

Was it not in good running condition before the swap?

Ok why did you do that? Are you using the s14 wiring harness or the s13?
