thinking about moving to japan.

well im fresh out of highschool and i kinda want to travel and have fun for the next couple years. I've always wanted to move to japan for a year or so and see how i liked it. I've been doing some reading and i've got 2 different stories about the car/drifting scene. some say it has died and some act like its still going. and some people are saying its still there but the people in it dont like outsiders at all.

what are yalls opinions on this? I would really like to know how the car scene is. cause i would like to move there and work at small tuning shop and have fun drifting. im not sure if thats some stupid pipedream anymore or not. but i've heard that you use to be able to. but im not sure if stuff has changed.

my opinion is as follows.

You are 18 years old. You should figure out what your good at, and start a career. Use your 'golden' years to get a foundation set....make lots of money, grow up, and THEN travel the world.

If you want to move to japan to be JDM, and do what you see in option videos, then you are not thinking properly.

Get yourself set in life, and in a career that will get your life set, AND THEN go and play. Trust me, i wish i had done what i told you to do.

It will not be anything like the movie "Tokyo Drift". Trust me.

yea i know what your saying. but i would rather have fun now. then when i cant cause im to old and im settled down. and everything that enjoy now is lost cause times have changed.

I'm not moving to japan just to be "JDM". my dad went to japan with work (nissan) for 2 months and he loved it. he said everybody should visit there atleast once in life. and i feel like i would really enjoy the culture there.

i don't think it's possible.

is it true that if you want to LIVE in japan, that you HAVE to be working or be in school? or be in something productive to the country?

At just what age do you think that will happen? I have partied with friends of mine in mexico that are almost 50 years old! (picture proof below)

I am 26 years old, and will be enjoying life until i die. You are still young so you think life ends after 20. IT DOES NOT. Seriously, get yourself set RIGHT NOW, and THEN go party across the world when you are financially able to.

I know 23 year olds who make over $80K a year....man do i wish i had done what they did. I am 26 and make little more then half of what they do! They can do whatever, and buy whatever the hell they want, with no worries.

Just swallow the blue pill, would ya!

Ok kid time to stop watching Tokyo Drift...
i swear soo many kids wanna move to japan, they see it as an easy win, drifting work on cars, pick up women etc.. lol

Give it a few years, and all those hot girls you saw in highschool will be fat, prego/had babies and live off some older guy lol.. so just try to stay in shape and you will be happy. lol

You should really remember why you were taught to respect (listen to) your elders.......

If you want to move to japan, then join the military. Otherwise, get that drifting dream out of your barely legal head.

Why is that, because people will be honest and try to talk some sense into your dumb ass?

hard part is gettin g ajob to AFFORD driving out there
gas is more
tires are more
track fees ar emore
toll roads are a lot (unless u can navigate ANd have the time for regular roads and avoid highways

its damn expensive to be a driver in japan when your not a native person. mostly due to the job situation.

good luck.
ive been to japan 3 times. i would only live there if i was filthy rich and didnt have to work. hahaha.

oh btw
drifting is ALWAYS on in japan. every night somewhere easily found u can get together w/ people and hit themountain/streets. it is not hard at all. just stay outside of big cities if i u want to own a car and NOT pay for parking for the most part.

and then if u do that, good luck getting a decnet job. its a catch-22.

pipedream because I'm pretty sure you need to get a work visa to stay over there and for that you'll need to be able to speak/write a little japanese.

Shit, you make it sound so fucking simple. I know folks whos civilian who's out here that are barely making ends meet, prior military, married to a local, got out and opened up a shop. He's been here over 20 years and he said he feels like he's exactly where he's at when he started back then. Only reason he stuck around is because he got used to it.

First off, unless you have a connection, the chance of you getting hired is slim to none. Are you fluent in Japanese? Most JPs barely speak any english. Hiring a foreigner to work in a shop is a hassle. They would rather hire japanese and they can pay them less. Labor is cheap compared to the states, you'd work 60-80 hours to make as much as working 40 hrs in the states for the same job in most prefectures. Then there's the finding a place deal, having enough money to support you till you do find a job, if ever.

You want to go to Japan, you got 2 options. Join the military and pray to God you get stationed here, or finish school, get a major in English and be an English teacher out here. Pay still wont be great but itll make ends meet. Those are the easiest way to get to Japan and survive with barely any means necessary.

Unless you're parents are paying for you to just live there, how do you expect to get by?

1) You only have a high school degree. How much experience do you have that would allow you to get a job over there?
2) You probably don't speak a word of Japanese.
3) It seems you're more concerned with drifting than living. How much other research have you done? Do you know how much a plane ticket costs? Do you know what living expenses are like when you get out there?

Sure it'd be fun to go out there. It'd also be fun to stayin the U.S., get a college degree, earn a ton of money when you get out, build up a nice car for drifting, and travel to Japan for a couple of weeks to consider a permanent move. ...but to each his own. Like I said, if you're spoiled and your parents will pay for anything you ask for, then go for it. Worst that could happen is you wind up beaten up, lying in a gutter, calling your parents from another tourist's cell phone while crying and asking for a plane ticket back home.

If you haven't considered any of the above, I'd question your intelligence and say some of the responses you've already gotten would be warranted.

cosign. Go talk to your parents about practicality. If you went to teach English, or to study, that's gravy. But at 18, and asking us on zilvia this question, odds are you view intelligence through a foggy set of glasses.

Go do JET. You'll either find a "real job" and stay, and love it, or you'll get totally burnt out after a couple years and want to come home.
