what does it mean when it ticks when the car is on? could that narrow down the search for problems?

Bad uhh whats it called... fuel injector. Disconnect one at a time see which one it is. pocket a few at the junkyard and replace.

Also, the ticking could be a timing chain rattle. I've had that in like 2 of the 4 s13-14's I've owned.

check your ground connections. same shit happened to me. it would sputter and lose power randomly. then one day POP and it shut off. turned out my battery ground was loose so the ignition coil wasnt getting enough ground to create spark. check the ignition coil ground too. 240s are notorious for bad ground connection problems.

Im having this same problem as well. It has been going on for about 5 months.

So far i have changed plugs, wires, rotor, cap, knock sensor, cleaned MAF and checked ecu codes. I have a fuel filter and new fuel injector o rings on the way aswell.

I need to check my tps sensor as well as clean the Throttle body, check timming, check grounds and vac lines.

I have searched quite a bit on this and everyone seems to have a different fix or no fix at all. It could be so many different things, its hard to point it out.

i had a really bad sputtering problem and loss of power for a while and i checked my fuel pressure which was at 24psi. changed the fuel pump for a warblo and its like driveing a whole new car. and the sti sound could be a bad injector, i had that problem too and i just got an injector from the junk yard and it fixed it. so i say you should check your fuel pressure and check to see if ur injectors are firing. hope you fix it. goodluck

Had that same problem, it would sputter and wont pass a certain rpm,,just recheck all your hosing..only thing i can think of is a well hidden boost leak or vacuum leak, iunno somwhere where its not maintaining pressure..you dont have to touch any hoses for it to randomly sputter, it couldve just came off itself or cracked because of normal wear and tear..

There isn't 1 single cause for this, just because the OP might have found his doesn't mean your's will be related at all.

Does your car sound like a subuaru? If so you only have the problem on one cylinder (hopefully.) pull 1 spark plug at a time. Hopefully 3 of the spark plugs will make your car idle even worse, and the 1 that doesn't is the cylinder you're having problems on. Verify you are getting spark to that cylinder by putting a plug in the spark plug wire, and setting it ontop of your valve cover and then watch for spark as you fire the engine a couple of times.

bogging can be tons of things.
bad injector, bad spark plug, bad cas, head gasket, bad fuel pressure, bad grounds... and dozens more

That sounds like o2 sensor. Also o2 sensor is cheaper so swap that out first.
Does it smell funky when stopped (like you are running rich?)

Same issue with my car. I'll try to floor it and it would bog and then it would feel like I'm not going anywhere.
