Dude, that sucks! I believe that you were looking at the road and the deer quickly jumped and ran in front of you. I've hit 2 deer that way--fortunately, only 1 incident caused any damage, but it wasn't anything serious. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm glad it didn't come through the windshield. I'm very glad you weren't hurt. That's very scary.
Someone was definitely watching over you that day--with the cop being there to try to help and your step-mom coming to help also. You are very lucky.
