It's so true. It's really hard to find a s14 in good shape to use just as a project car.. I say go for it..just like bigsyke said they do get pretty expensive and even at those prices your not guaranteed mint condition...at $2000 you well put in way less money to get it to be a nice decent car then to go out and buy a $4500 beater that's only in a little better shape.. And your right you well have to go out and buy some new tools but hey new tools never hurt anybody....
