I agree with you on driving it straight off. Its the best way if you are going off. If the guy came out of the belts, then the belts were not mounted properly, or the harness bar (if he had one) bent and allowed the belts to loosen... Or the seat mounts or sliders moved...or the belts were junk...Or maybe he had his belts on loose? I dont know. But i do know that a good properly mounted seat and good properly mounted belts wont move in a crash. Its better to LEARN from everyones mistakes/misfortunes rather than just your own. It could save your life. Thats why they do accident investigations, so they can make changes and save life's.
