As far as wind turbine generators, they have issues with disposal- but they also have a 20-year lifespan. As far as a net negative, you may be thinking of this.

It's my opinion that over reliance on the private sector is the major issue in energy production. Return on investment is irrelevant. Utility to users in the long-term is the goal. We should be building our version of Roman public works that still deliver water after 2000 years.
