LS1 350z Drift Build 'Nuff Said'
Okay it is time for me to start this build thread. First I would like to say this has been a long time coming and I just can't wait for the finish product to be done. I will do this build in stages and tell you everything, from building the engine to suspension work. I will also make note of how much everything cost since that is a big deal for everyone that wants to do an LS build. I will post an update once a week with pics so there will be something to look at..And last but not least I will post a beer of the week, since I love crafted beers:thumbup: So lets get started!!
http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...m/theyears.jpg Wanted to post this pic here.. Some of you know my car and some of you don't. but it has been through so many wheels/looks its not funny.. But it will not look like this any more and hopefully the last change..... STAGE 1: Phase 1...'Engine tear down and clean up' http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...T_album/15.jpg Let's start this with the beer of the week.. One of my Favs 'DogFish Head 90 Min' Good stuff http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q..._album/1-2.jpg First thing was the purchase of this LS1 longblock that I got off of LS1tech.com. You can find a lot of useful info on there so def check it out.. http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q..._album/2-1.jpg A little dirty but that will all change. Had 38k on it and the owner had the Bottom end torn down by a local machine shop (to check the condition of it which was great still) and had all the bearings replaced, ls6 oil pump installed, ls2 timing chain, ARP rod bolts.. All this for the price of $1500 http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...T_album/35.jpg In my opinion not a bad purchases since I plan on changing and adding a lot of aftermarket parts.. http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q..._album/3-2.jpg First thing I saw was this little chip on the crank balancer pulley.. a no go in my book and will get replaced... http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q..._album/4-1.jpg Now lets crack open these heads and see what we have.. To do so you will need a 10mm to unbolt all the head bolts. http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q..._album/5-1.jpg Nasty:icon22: I don't like how dirty they are so I will send these off to the machine shop to get cleaned.. http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q..._album/6-1.jpg To have the heads ready for the machine shop, I went to Advance Auto parts to rent out there Valve Spring Compressor. This is a free service through them and you guys should def take advantage of it.. Just leave a deposit and you get it back when you return it.. http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q..._album/7-2.jpg Comes with everything you need to get the job done.. It is kind of like a big ass C clamp http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...T_album/75.jpg I placed a little rubber cap over the end of the compressor so it would not F up the valves.. http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q..._album/8-1.jpg Lets do this... Gloves are  http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q..._album/9-2.jpg This is how you use this tool for those that don't know. The Heads have to be off the engine to use this tool. http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...album/10-1.jpg Placement of the tool http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...album/11-1.jpg next is getting these damn Valve seals out.. Just use pliers and a lot of force.. http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...album/12-1.jpg Then remove the retainers... http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...T_album/13.jpg Bam!!! everything is all done and ready to send to machine shop.. ...... ... .. . http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...T_album/14.jpg Okay got them back from the machine shop from their bath.. and man does it look so much better.. Price of this service is only $25 a head... So Build total so far is $1550 Next week: STAGE 1: Phase 2 'Cam/Pulley Install' |
excited to see this thing come back alive :)
|
nice documentation so far.
last pic....are those valves bent? hah, they're tilting. |
Nice! Hopefully you can do this faster then I did, hahaha!

Edafe, good to see you on Zilvia bro
|
you should've kept those rotiforms! sooo sick.
|
yea edafe!! glad to see this happen.
Not 100% on this, but i may be getting rid of the s13 to dump some cash in the Z but we'll see. Either way im not stayin out of texas any time soon :) |
dont get me wrong, im not against the v8. but why? i understand the swap into 240s. the motor that comes with 240s in stock from sucks donkey balls.
the motor that comes with this car isnt all that bad. wouldnt take much to get the vq up to what the ls1 has right? |
Edafe doin work!! I like this! haha

personally the motor that comes in the 03-06 350z's sucks balls anything over 400whp and you have the build the block, cost more to build the block and add turbo's than just put a simple V8 in it plus n/a is more reliable on the track than have to worry about turbos, boost leaks, etc oh and a stock ls1 has about 100 more whp and torque than vq35de |
Finally Edafe! lol - see you soon ;)
I'll let you know who this is soon - pm me your number. |
Would love to see the end product!
|
Loving the detail in this build thread. I've been helping out otto graven on installing his ls7r. If you have any questions let me know, I can find the answer. lol

Once people get over 400whp they start having issues, either with the build it's self of just constant BS. Piston slap, leaking this and that, ideal problems, head lift so forth. Its all well documented. Not to mention the DE and Rev-Up motors only put 240-246whp to the ground in stock form it's little wonder people are swapping out the minivan motor. I wish I put my VQ into my 240 an then a LS/JZ into the Z. Oh well. |
lsjuan ftw
|
you sir rock!
its gona be epic cant wait for the finished product! |
why the 98 block?
known for poor oil galleries,.. try to end up with a 99+ i'll be watching this build as well, hopefully get an ls2 in mine and join you soon @ the tx drift series next year! Either way good luck bro, cars inspiring to me as well. ppw ftw! |

By the way my stock Rev-Up threw down 256hp on the dyno. Lol Quote:

I was just asking because i saw the perimeter valve cover (early style) = 97 vette or 98 fbody ls1.
Also, its not so much the oil pump. The early block design/oil galleries were somewhat restricted and didn't flow well. compared to the revised 99 block and even better, ls6 2002 block. Might want to look into that, last thing you would want is a accusumped lsx still starving for oil. |
