ok, im in the process of buying a fc rx7 shell (waiting on money) but i plan to buy a front clip and do a rhd conversion. And i would like to do the work myself and im deciding it i want a mig or a tig welder. and i wanted your opinion on which would be a more all purpose way for welding stuff like the firewall, or custom exhaust? and r there certain purposes that a mig can do better then a tig or vis versa.

What chassis is the motor in?

Perhaps you should check out weldingweb's forums. There is a lot of good information there that helped me get started. I am still learning a lot, but I would say a MIG welder would be a better all purpose machine, and easier/cheaper to learn with...

Perhaps I should rephrase that - an AC TIG welder would probably be a better all purpose machine, but for the things you listed a MIG would work well... and still be much cheaper and easier to learn with.

Perhaps I may bend up a few cages.

I'm assuming you are referring to the $600-ish ones?
I quoted someone $400 to bend and fit him a cage. He provided materials.
(He wanted to pay $80.....)

I could probably make a kit for $500-$600... Only downside is the shipping.

Since you're asking this type of question I'm assuming you have little to no knowledge or experience...

based solely on that.. TIG is NOT for you especially since you're working with sheet metal.

MIG will eaily do you body work and your exhaust. Once you learn to MIG weld and become efficient at it.... Then I would suggest taking a TIG welding class. See if you like it. THEN buy a TIG...

And AC TIG will NOT be a better all purpose machine in the hands of someone who is completely new to welding... They would end up spending more time and money buying consumables for all the mistakes they will make then they would actually spend welding.

An AC/DC TIG would be the ideal machine for someone with experience and knows what to expect.

Again, MIG is perfect for newbies...

my next one's will be 6'' long and im going to do a bent pistol grip out of some 1 1/2 thick aluminum strap i have .

So this week i was pretty bored, so i decided to try my hand at building a intake manifold, and since i had a spare motor sitting on the floor it was a perfect opportunity.

Ive never really builit one before or even thought of it for that matter. But here is as far as i got.

Its probably not the best design and such but whatever like i said i was pretty bored.

I bought a little flux core about 3 months ago so I could fix my coupe. Here are a couple shots of some of what I've done with it so far.

Obviously the work is not as clean or precise as most of what I've seen in here but I do try to take my time and learn more as I go along and I'm proud to do all of my own work. Maybe one day I will own a TIG :]

You are off to a very good start.
If your welder has a gas input. I'd recommend trying a small bottle of gas along with your flux core. Even on small Lincolns and Millers I've noticed an increase in quality and penetration over regular mig. This is typically referred to as Dual Shield Flux Core.

It is used on heavy duty industrial equipment all the time. As the end result is a much higher quality weld.

If you're using a 110v source and don't have the gas input. You pre-heat your work with a propane torch to improve your welds. (Don't heat to glowing red though.)

Keep on doing what you're doing. You're headed in the right direction.

I didn't think you were supposed to use flux core wire with gas.

You don't have to, but I have read many times of people doing that . Check out welding web...

Any of you guys have any suggestions for mocking up an exhaust before cutting and welding? I was thinking about using PVC to see where all the bends and layout would be but it seems really restrictive?

I would like to hear some advice on this topic as well... I am in the process of making one also.

I was planning on cutting a bunch of 15 degree pie slices and just going from there. Or possibly spending some extra money and getting pre-bent pieces.

Any input from the pros?
