240SX ISIS Stainless Steel Braided Power Steering Line Install and Review
240SX ISIS Stainless Steel Braided Power Steering Line Install and Review
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._7941594_n.jpg A plague to the 240 family is a soft, leaky power steering system. In an effort to help correct this, Enjuku Racing’s ISIS product line offers a Stainless Steel Power Steering Line. On top of replacing leaky lines and improving steering feel, the line also allows for more clearance when going turbo and makes converting from 1989/1990 power steering systems to 1991+ much easier. The line comes with everything you need for installation. The installation it’s self is not bad at all. Just expect to get a little messy with the power steering fluid. After installation I noticed the steering feel is more direct and turn in is more responsive. I have not experienced any leaks from the line after about a month or so and a drift event. Tools needed: A set of metric open ended wrenches Drain pan New Power Steering fluid Installation: Step one: Make some room for you to work by removing the air filter and mass air flow sensor. http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._3653865_n.jpg Step two: Place a drain pan under the rack to catch the fluid and remove the bottom line going into the steering rack. *note* mine was old and broke so don’t be surprised if yours does too http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._7204230_n.jpg Step 3: Remove the bracket holding the lines inside fender. http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5149371_n.jpg Step four: Remove the top part of the hose from the power steering pump. http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._2719802_n.jpg Step five: Insert the fittings into the PS pump and Rack separately from the line using the washers that came with the line. *note* Be careful of the o-ring on the fitting and don’t lose it. http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._3250577_n.jpg http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._1902619_n.jpg http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._2126367_n.jpg Step six: Install the line onto the fittings and snug it down. http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._7900846_n.jpg http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos...04_12233_n.jpg Step 7: Fill with new fluid and give the wheels a few turns back and forth with the engine running to circulate the fluid and you are good to go! |
nice, thanks for the post! In a few weeks i will be trying this with my sr!
|
What is the line length?
|
i need to get one of these for my car. im rockin the no power steering right now :snoop:
|
I don't know the length of the line but there was plenty as you can see in the pictures.
|
Thanks for the write-up. I'll be ordering one of these soon for my SR
|
Was curious, as I have a Z31.
|
i wonder if this would work for my CA
|
Thanks for the write up! I'd love to see how these fit around an SR. I don't think I have the room to route a line like that as you do.
So this eliminates that hard line, w/electrical connector, that crosses over the cross member... What is that sensor for BTW? |
Im interested to see if it holds up to more time & abuse
|
Quote:
it sits pretty in an SR, i got one, been running it for about 3 months, with absolutely NO problems with it... also noticed a firmer feel to the steering... and the line routes right past the turbo, it has a bit of excess in the line, which in our case is good cause you have multiple routing options... as for that sensor, all it's for it to tell the ECU to kick up the idle a tad to compensate for the belt drag by the PS pump working..... i have minimal difference with the ISIS line... be like me and match that shiz up with a TF 1 peice braided clutch line... shit's so hot right now... |
you used ATF instead of ps fluid, right?

I thought it had something to do with leaking...IDK how though. What is more viscous? ATF or PS fluid |
Fail this thread is old..my bad.
|
:bash:i just got mine in the mail! cant wait to put it on! i really hopes it fixes my ps problem i have changed the power steering pump, the rack, and cleaned out all of the hard lines and the fluid is till gettin pushed back out the reserv. this is my last option! im goin crazy man lol :bash:

I will be installing mine soon. I know Josh (Yoshi) personally and told enjuku he told me to get one when he seen my hose drip a few drop.....they gave me free shipping...
I have an sr so I will try to remember to post some pics for yall. As a side note: The fittings appear to be -6an however Im unsure of the other male end. I doubt anyone could make them for them selves and cheaper considering the prices of an fittings however its nice to know that I have some -6 stuff laying around and if there ever was a issue I would be able to easially repair it. That also might be a nice bit of info for the guy that was asking about his z31, you may see if they can just send you the fittings and then you could make your own line with your own hose and fittings. |
hey i just noticed that mine has sensor or something on the lines( when u follow the lines from top to bottom there is a wire that connect to small thingy into the lines.anybody knows what is that? thanks
o mine is s14 with s13 blacktop sr20 |

Scared to do dirt drops for fear of snapping your braided clutch line? No problem! http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c5...1/DSCN0395.jpg UPDATE: My power steering still makes a grinding noise. I checked the fluid and the level is fine. I even had the line bled. Oh well, as long as it works fin no biggie. |
i installed this on my 40 bout a month ago now and it works beautifully! it fixed my ps problems and there really is an improvement in respons
|
i just ordered one yeah
|
Cant wait to order mine next week.....this is all I need in order to get my car going.
|
I installed mine the other day. It really was one of them things that should be simple and strait forward but tended to piss me off being difficult. The hose is really stiff and makes it difficult to get the fittings lined up well enough to prevent cross threading. I really wish they would have went with push lock style an fittings instead of having the fittings already pressed on the hose. If I would have known then (at the time of ordering) what I know now I would have seen if it would be possible to just order the fittings that plug into the rack and pump and made the rest of the assemble myself with an goodies.
I do however think I am going to like this damn thing allot though now that its installed. The fitting that goes on the pump from the factory does seem to be a bottle neck somewhat. The holes that are in the banjo fitting do seem small and it seems like it may be hard for it to flow through. Also my high pressure line (factory) was swelling and leaking which is why I replaced it. However I swear that the steering input now is much easier! The steering wheel turns MUCH easier than ever before! |

quote] you do realize that Power Steering hose is WAY different from regular braided stuff...P/S hose is about the same as hydro lines. VERY HIGH pressue. you can NOT use push lock type fitting....just wanted to clear that up for future reference. you can also build a line using earls, or russel lines and fitting for a decent price, and WAY better quality. |
just installed but now my p/s has grinding noises everytime i turn left or right and the reservoir is bubbling.i assumed that is the return line, any advice?
|
^^^
bleed your system and make sure you guys are using ATF NOT powersteering fluid |
shoot just flushed with new ps fluid.i hope those noise is not ftom the rack
|
I slipped up with ps fluid during my install. I even had atf I bought just for this but it was late at night during the instal, opened the cabinet and I seen a big bottle of ps and guess what I used.....
Made the rack leak some, drained it all out and dumpped a bottle of lucas stop leak in there and its about done leaking. I hate all of their products besides their ps additive. I had a hard spot and whine in my dodge truck and that stuff fixed that too. |
So what is the lengh of the line ? 2 feet?
|
anyone know what size these fittings are? There's a place near my house that will make this line for me
|
Quote:
|
Will this work on a sohc? I bought one and the sohc line seems to be way long compared to the isis piece
|
You need to convert over to 1991-1994 power steering
|
Yeah i realized the sohc setup is twice as long when I finally went under there. Its ok though Im going to convert to dohc anyway pretty soon just trying to get all the pieces together
|
looks like ill be buying me some this week...thanks for the thread
|
just put one in my friends car and its LEGIT!!! better response and only took about 30 min to put in his sr20. convinced me to buy one so ill be doibg that soon...

that means no one on here knows lol. Call enjuku and they will tell you. They are very cool and helpfull

last time i did they told me they didnt know, and to buy it and find out...they offered free returned shipping at the time...i just wasnt down to get my hopes up for nothing... :werd: its sucks being different sometimes...:tardrim: |
Bringing it back since my power steering decided to give my engine bay a bath in ATF.

I don't understand how your set up could be any different than the KA/SR one? After doing some research I found this DIY thread from NJTuners.com: an lines for the 240sx power steering and relocation - NJTuners.com so the thread size of the high pressure lines appear to be 16 x 1.50 on both ends. There's a Mr. Hose near my work, I plan on stopping by and seeing how much it would cost me to just have the line made. |
Thanks for the link, that really helped.
High pressure: (2 ft.) 130606ERL -6AN Power Steering Hose (blue Hose) (2) 139106ERL 90degree -6AN Hose Fitting, Steel, zinc-plated (1) 9919DFJERL -6AN to 16mm x 1.5, AN to Metric fitting adapter, blue (1) 991954ERL -6AN to 14mm x 1.5, AN to Metric fitting adapter, blue Plug in the part #'s (without the "ERL") at AN PLUMBING.COM and it comes out to $59.92 before shipping. Put it together yourself and save around $40. Earl's makes high-quality products. ISIS did come out with a great pre-made product first but this is definitely more affordable |
Okay, so my power steering hose it leaking like crazy.. It literally squirts a stream of fluid every time I turn the wheel too much to the far left or right.
I wanted to try the ISIS Steel Braided Power Steering line. Seems simple enough, I'm going to order one tomorrow. Quick question though, it seems like some people have no problem with using regular Power Steering Fluid while others say to use Automatic Transmission Fluid. Which is it? I don't want to break my power steering by putting the wrong fluid in with that braided line. Which do I use? Thanks, --Marc |
Use ATF. Period!
|
yea, p/s is thinner and will cause your rack to leak.
|
Just ordered one of these! This line decided to leak due to the wonderful lovely weather that i got stuck driving in ah well can't wait!
|
I am interested in doing this myself and the info in NJ was great... However, I would also like to do the 2 smaller hardlines on the rack... believe these are for cooling also.
any info on what the thread pitch is on these? -Drew |
Quote:
but it would be a good idea to do just so that they can be tied to the rack and moved out of the way since they always get kinked during engine/tranny jobs. also for those making their own high pressure line ideal length is 1.3 foot or so I got 2 feet just to be safe and it's way too long |
Okay, so I installed it with MUCH difficulty today. That one clip with the bushing holding the two hard lines in wouldn't budge so I just tore it off... the second hard line was untouched but its making a sqealing noise and its actually grinding. I'm worried, any tips?
|
Quote:
Majority of seals are made to be used only with certain chemicals/fluids By using the the wrong chemicals/fluids with a certain seal it will cause the seal to Dry up and crack or deteriorate causing fluid to seep by. |
Any ideas as to why the steering feels worse? I used ATF and it's making a whining noise as if it were low/near empty. When I turn the wheel I can hear/feel a grinding. It's really worrying me.. What shall I do?
EDiT: I just bled the power teering and it filled up two 16oz bottles and both were just as red as the original ATF. Still making whining noises upon startup and grinding noises when turning hard. Please help.. I'm worried. It was working fine with leaky OEM line and since I switched to this one its been giving me this problem. Aaahh! |
make sure your using the right atf..the fsm calls for dextron 2 or better
|
Quote:
EDIT: I dunno if I'm being paranoid but I think I smell something burning.. the rack might not be getting any fluid.. it doesn't seem like the fluid is being pushed through the system. The line seems to be vibrating when the car is on. Still making that whining noise as if it were low on fluid and it does grind when turning the wheel on the ground. Could I have put the cable in wrong? It isn't leaking? |
so any word on the ps line noise. i installed the line maybe about 3 months ago. have bled it numerous times and i am using ATF. it seems that the problem is normal since many people are saying it's happening to them. well not normal but you get the point. Do you guys thing that the diameter of the hose is smaller maybe??? and not enough flow??
|
If your factory line was leaky and the pump was sounding fine and it changed after your install then your pump is bad. It happened to me also. Replaced the pump and all the noise went away. If you have a spare pump try it out. There is NO way you put the hose on wrong unless you either didnt tighten it or you kinked the line. And I am sure they are using the right size line because power steering specific line is only available in -6an.
|
im wondering now, if i should just make a PS cooling system...
would it work if i were to instead of running the line from the pump to rack, i put a cooler in between that feed? anyone know minimum length to mount the cooler to the say the numper support...? |
Quote:
yeah ill check it out on that one. my old setup wasnt leaking so i dont think it's the pump. although i have no clue what they were using as fluid before. it might be PS fluid instead of the ATF. but good to know or have an option thanks. ill post up results. |

Low Pressure: EAR-351008ERL 10ft of -8AN Pro-Lite 350, Braided Nylon EAR-900208ERL -8AN Econ-O-Fit,blue For the s13 chassis, you'll need two extra fittings. The s14 has a power steering cooler on the low pressure side, whereas the s13 is just a line going back to the reservoir. The cooler is just an aluminum tube that runs across the front of the subframe and back. The s14 can use a hose clamp (econ-o-fit) or whatever, but the s13 needs the following. EAR-9919EFJERL -8AN to 16mm x 1.5, AN to Metric fitting adapter, blue RUS-610101 45degree -8AN to -8AN, aluminum, nickel plated Comments: About 2-3ft of the hose was used. For the s14, you'll need two Econ-o-fit hose clamps. For the s13, you'll need only one. The other end uses the extra two fittings. |
You really think I am that Dumb.... thank you... no really!
You obviously don't know what "I" am taking about... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y18...0/IMG_4028.jpg Awww the 2 lines in the front look sooooo coool... how cute... But Why did you leave the other 2 in the BACK stock? Yes... Brainasium... those!!! -Drew |
Quote:
TMS, theres no reason for nissan to make the back lines a different thread diameter/pitch so 14x1.5 should be it. |

sorry. last time i am gonna try and help you. geez |
Mine is hitting my waterline from the water neck.
Its not leaking or anything but kind of wish they wouldnt touch. "you never make them touch" http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...3-18183301.jpg |

Im thinking about getting this within the next week or so, Where can i get that second line at going to the rack, the one that's braided in the picture above from under the car?

Aeroquip Teflon Racing Hose
Superior fluid compatibility, abrasion and corrosion resistance for reliable service. Made with an extruded Teflon inner tube that's compatible with a wide range of fluids, including hydraulic brake fluids. The hose has a bright stainless steel wire-braid cover that resists abrasion and corrosion, providing optimum dependability. Applications: Offraod brake, transmission, clutch, gauge, N20, power steering, hydraulic. -03 specs: 0.14 Hose ID, 0.25 Hose OD, Max operating pressure of 3000 PSI -04 specs: 0.19 Hose ID, 0.30 Hose OD, Max operating pressure of 3000 PSI -06 specs: 0.32 Hose ID, 0.43 Hose OD, Max operating pressure of 2500 PSI This was taken straight off the website. so you're saying that this -6AN hose rated for 2500 psi isnt good enough for power steering? Also, it says it compatible with power steering in the description. |
Quote:
Works fine now and doesnt leak or touch. |
^^^^^ where did you get your high pressure braided line from?
|
Quote:
the one from the water neck is also isis. I just reused one of my old taka fittings that was a 90* |
ok. does anyone who has actually made there own high pressure power steering line have pictures of it installed or peiced together?
is it true that for high pressure a special machine needs to press the fittings onto the hose? cant the pressure fittings and the pressure hose be bought and peiced together just like any other braided line? as long as the fittings and hose are both rated for the correct pressure. |
I will admit, I did not read the description. But if its good for 2500psi, it should be good enough.
There are different ways to do high pressure hoses. I see that Isis crimped one end and assembled the other by hand(as it looks), some crimp both ends and some go together like regular ss hose. I know Aeroquip has some high pressure hose and fittings that have a brass ferrule that you slip between the braid and hose, then install onto the fitting itself. I used Earls PS specific fittings and hose. Went together similar to regular ss hose (I have not assembled regular SS hose before) Here are a few blurry cell phone pics of the line I made for my high pressure p/s hose. http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/1764/79437120.jpg http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/3447/82028022.jpg http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/4716/91551065.jpg I dont have any pictures of mine on the car as my cameras are not good in low light areas. |
do you know if the aeroquip power steering hose and fittings go together like normal braided lines do or if they have to be crimped on?
|
No idea on aeroquip. Russels has a ferrule that goes between the ss braid and the hose itself, then put together like regular. Earls is similar to regular, just a bit tougher. Just do some research and you should find what you need.
|
alrighty. ill email the company. thanks.
|
they said the aeroquip lines go together like normal braided lines do. no crimping necessary. they assemble with hand tools and are perfect for power steering application.
|
So anyone have any tips on removing the hard line bracket? I have emissions and a/c in the car still and my gorilla hands won't fit down there. >_<
Edit: I just cut the hard line off then pulled it through the bracket, w00t! |
Wondering how the hoses are holding up for everyone? Anyone experiencing any leaks???
|
Just posting this in here. I bought a ISIS power steering line for my 2JZGTE 240sx. and installed it last night. WORKS PERFECTLY! no leaks, and it's nice to have P/s again!
the line is about as short as you would want it in a JZ/S-chassis car, but it works just fine. |
I just bought mine, still waiting for it.
|
Ok I'm frustrated as hell right now. Put the isis hose on. Added atf into the reservoir, cut the car on. From here I turned the steering wheel probably 100+ times and the atf still has small bubbles all in it. I was doing this with the wheels off the ground. I cut the car off for a minute then started it again with a puff of smoke out of the tail pipe. Knew that wasn't good so I checked the oil and there's splotchy oil on it like perhaps water in it. I'm going to change the oil tomorrow to see if maybe water got in it and pray no damage was done as the car did not overheat. How in the hell do I get the bubbles out? I know turn the wheel back and forth but why is it not going away?
Ok let me add another detail. I have actually only been able to put in 3/4 of a quart of atf as well. The fluid level is not dropping as air comes out of the system either. |
For those of you who made their own ps line for SR20's, do you mind telling me the proper hose fittings that fit into the PS pump and the upper banjo mounting place (on my NX it's on the psgr strut tower).
Thanks for the help:) |
wondering if anyone used a washer on the rack side of the fitting for this line? I used the supplied washer with the kit for the fitting with the small rubber ring that goes into the rack, and re used the copper washer on the factory ps pump with the other fitting. Is this wrong? There is a slow leak on the rack side fitting...
|
going to try to build the p/s hoses(going to use the anplumbing material) for my hicas because i could never find the hose for the rear steering. just wondering on the fitting for the rack does it have to be a 90 degree or can i put a 45 degree(because the one that MadScientist posted in the pic looks like a 45)??? also would the fitting adapters be the same ones since the pump and rack are diffenent from the non-hicas 240's i think they are but just want to make sure before i buy the stuff
|
my high pressure line is holding up great but recently my return line has been leaking im thinking of replacing it anybody has any ideas?
