'94 GTR-32 V SPEC II (RB26DETT) - Erradic oil pressure
 

My buddy has a problem with his R32, after a little driving his oil pressure drops to anywhere from 1cm^3 to almost zero. When the car initialy starts up its anywhere from 3 to 4 cm^3. He believes it would be either the oil pressure sensor or maybe even the oil pump acting up. Since I lack expirence with RB26's, would any of you have any suggestions on how to diagnose the problem? Thanks in advance!

might be the oil pickup

Erradic oil pressure? Never heard of that. Erratic oil pressure though could be debris in the pickup or in one of the ports through the engine, like a piece of RTV that broke off from one of the many places it's used to seal.

Or it could be the oil pump drive. It's a known problem with the RB motors.

i would start by getting a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the motor
snap on sells a dope kit with many different fittings.

you plug it in place of your stock oil pressure sender.
this will tell you whether or not you're really getting low oil pressure or just have a bad sender

^^^Until you manage to get something like this...DONT BOTHER STARTING IT TILL YOUR SURE YOUR NOT REALLY HAVING OIL PRESSURE ISSUE!!!

main bearings, if you have good pressure and its not the oil pump, pickup or dent in the pan. this happened to my motor, it would have good oil pressure when started, then after a few mile of driving it would start to go down a few psi until it was warm then dropped fast.

This was the same way i blew my last SR. I was getting 3 bar, which sounds great right? But not at fucking redline...i was barely getting half a bar at idle. Needless to say, rod knocked. Now im on a rebuild and im slapping some fucking oil cooler on it, to keep the oil happy.

three is way too damn low should be around 6/7 at cold start, 2 at idle, i say ithe oil pump is on its way out... same thing happened on the rb20 in my cefiro, same thing happened to my friends gtr... like flip said/ don't run that car anymore until this is fixed

I've owned 2 BNR32's. It's a VERY common for 32 oil pressure sensors to act up/go out on owners. My first GTR acted like his symptom, it would read fine at startup but after the car was running for about a minute it would drop to almost zero. Aftermarket oil pressure gauge read normal pressures. If he can source a new OEM sensor, tell him to get it

Oh yeah, my statement is only true if he's getting the readings he is talking about from the stock oil pressure gauge in the cluster. If he's getting those readings off of an aftermarket gauge, then it's another problem

I've been told that oil pump's are known to give out often on RB 's so this is definitely one possible peoblem, The car is parked until this is figured out.

This is another possible problem we're considering since I've also been told that the sensor is another possible culprit. He is using the OEM guage on the cluster, so maybe upgrading to an aftermarket guage would't hurt?

Hopefully its not the bottom end giving out this car, but thats not rueld out either.

I'll take everybody's advice and I'll keep you guys posted, if anyone has any other tips please chime, I'll talke as much advice as I can get. Thanks guys!

Oil pumps are not known to fail on the rb engines. The r32-34 engines all use the same pump.

The r32 rb26dett's have a problem with their oil pump drive. If that fails you would see 0 oil pressure.
