Machining Power Steering Fittings
 

Hello Everyone,

I've been looking into speaking with a few local companies in my area about making S-Chassis specific power steering fittings for our cars. I know I was tired of my steering rack always leaking ps fluid because of fittings being to short that were provided in some kit. Also, I didn't like slapping a bunch of sealant on the threads of these kit provided fittings and hoping that it would stop the leak. So I ended up making my own fittings from the original lines and welding them to bungs. So far my car has stopped leaking. Now I'm looking into having fittings made and wanted to see of the community would be interested in something like this.

Any feedback about this would be helpful. I'll be contacting a few local companies today and seeing how much it would cost to manufacture.

all this stuff is available from Earls store. no need to re-invent the wheel, if your fittings leak you are using the wrong fittings or installed them improperly.

It would be cool to see a CNC'd 2 bolt to -10an feed fitting off the pump, but that's the only one that needs to be made. As mentioned, everything else is just thread adapters already made by earl's, aeroquip, etc.

I wasn't aware that Earl's made that fitting. Every fitting I looked up and searched for was reported as to short and leaked.

I know I didn't install my fittings incorrectly. I used the fittings that were provided to me in my ps kit. I appreciate the feedback guys.

I'm using these, they don't leak. Russel fittings don't leak as well. Always use steel or aluminum fittings, brass can break over time since it's brittle.

Thanks for the information. Will these work on the S13? It looks a lot shorter than what I have going into my S13. Also, the fitting you provided is for the low pressure fitting. What are you using for the high pressure one? I think high pressure is 14mm x 1.5.

There is a thread exactly on this. Welding an fittings to the stock fittings. Would seem silly to take them off car, ship them, have them welded, shipped back. When any local welder can do this in 30 minutes

I'm not trying to have people take off their stock fittings and send them to me to be welded. When I said I would weld up another set, I meant it would be for the machine shop or manufacturer. I want to provide them with exact fittings that fit perfectly. That way the manufacturer has something to spec out. The picture I provided was from someone who had a machine shop make them a fitting.

I got one off ebay and it isn't leaking. Have also used Earls and Russell and none of them leaked

I have those on the rack I didn't put in my car yet. They're nice. ^

Machining the fittings will ensure it seals within the rack. Using the proper hydraulic thread sealant will help but it will only buy you time if its not a perfect seal.

Here is machined vs non-machined. I will never install these fittings without machining. Trust me when I say there is an additional 3mm needed to seat properly.

Simply wrong. There is not a single fitting that sets the o-ring at the proper depth to seal inside the rack like the oem line. Every single aftermarket fitting has the oring slightly too shallow. The only ones that ARE correct are the fittings that come with the Fueled Racing LS swap power steering lines, because they MACHINE them down to seal PROPERLY.
Not saying they cant seal as is, sometimes they do, most times they don't. And a copper/aluminum washer to seal is not proper either. I believe they will sell the fittings alone if contacted.

Would be nice if someone actually made and sold them up front though.

3 in a row with 3 different brands and plenty of retorques on each and have never had one leak. So I think you're simply wrong with your "simply wrong" comment...

Like I said it's possible for them to not leak even being technically incorrect. The masses of people with leaking fittings would agree. The fitting for my Isis line came with a washer to seal it, it doesn't leak, doesn't mean it's right.

My s13 didn't have abs, but I converted my car years ago to rhd. I think I'm using an abs rack.

I appreciate you posting pics of what I'm talking about. I'm assuming that not all racks are the same. I've used crushed washers, washers with rubber seals. The only thing that seemed to slow down the leak was thread sealant that could handle ps fluid.

Since I made my own fittings I haven't had a ps leak. I'm still going to look into possibly having these manufactured. I could never trust the fittings that were provided in my chase bays ps kit.
