Fuel tank cracked, fuel cell replacement?
 

Yesterday i started smelling gas really bad around my car, thinking nothing of it i drove home. This morning my fuel was drained out, i later jacked it up and looked underneath and saw that the tank was cracked. Unfortunatly this is my only vehicle (except for girlfriend), and i need to get back up on the road quick. I cannot locate a tank near me, and if im going to spend 500$ for a new tank i might as well go the fuel cell route and redo the lines also.

So my question is, does putting a fuel cell further back affect handeling? Also any drawbacks other than no trunk space, and having to drop the subframe to remove fuel tank.

p.s. Haven't done 1 minute of research on fuel cells yet, so no flaming.

If this is your daily, stick a stock tank back into it... You'll end up spending more and it'll be down longer as proper fuel cell install requires welding and cutting of trunk area.

Idk about a s14, but in my s13 hatch you didn't need to drop the subframe

S14 gas tank is above the subframe, therefore the subframe must be dropped to remove the tank.

mine is slowly leaking out, i considered a fuel cell but in the end am going to replace the tank. hopefully the one i have now holds until i can find a replacement that isnt 500

Save yourself the headache and buy a new one... Your's cracked, who's to say the next "replacement" isn't going to crack and you're back in the same boat? All of your replacements that aren't new are the same age (pushing 15-20yrs) and will end up with the same fate. Seems all S14 tanks share this common issue.

I've been noticing a fuel smell while driving my car as well. I've noticed when I fill my tank all the way up (completely full) there is a slow gas leak. I've just been filling it up about 3/4 to prevent the leak. I'm hoping it is just the filler neck tube and not a cracked tank

Hooking up a fuel cell requires much more than blooping in a square box and running some lines to it. Being in Atlanta, it is hard to believe you're forced to buy a new one. There HAS to be some junked S14's around the area where you can get a good tank for cheap. The only thing required to swap out a tank is a good jack, a few jack stands, and a handful of tools.
