Sr20det Rockers/2Step Help
 

I have a fully built s13 redtop sr with rocker arm stoppers brian crower springs retainers and kelford cams and AEM enigine management Series 1. I have learned that hard limiters are very bad for SR's from experience, Hard limiters just seem to be terrible on the rockers I have shattered a pair of rockers two different times and each time it was only slightly on the limiter. and Just today my AEM tuner guy was setting up the 2 step I asked for a soft cut but some how he was hitting a hard cut because it sound like a 12 gauge shotgun was going off beside my ear well after him hitting it twice my car started misfiring and I had to pull the valve cover found the flat shim popped out of place from under the rocker.

So my questions are how can I setup my two step on a soft cut so there is no loud back firing or anything and it still builds boost? I have searched for this and cant find anyone setting it up on there AEM series 1

Also I have read a couple of topics but haven't got a for sure answer How do I get my sr to quit shattering rocker arms? Whats all these drag SR's mods for their valve train?

You have a few options here although these will help but not solve the problem:

#1 switch to a solid pivot conversion. Tomei makes solid lifters.

#2 Do a dual guide conversion. Basically instead of having 1 shim and one guide convert both to guides. This will help the rocker stay in place if one gets "spit out"

Or to completely solve the problem, switch to the VVL/VE cylinder head. This head has solid shaft mounted rockers.

Thank you for your response, I guess im going to by a ve head build it up and eventually swap it. it should have the same fitment of the stock head right?

Yes a vvl head will bolt onto a rwd sr but you aren't done at that point. You still have to make the vvl solenoids work with an adapter kit or something and then it has to be tuned for it to engage etc etc.

The best thing for you to do IMO is the dual rocker guide mod. All it takes is another set of rocker guides and shave down the other rocker arm so it fits in the guide. After doing it correctly you will never throw another rocker arm. It also helps to have a properly designed cam such as Jim Wolf S3's or S4's. To put it in perspective I have Jim Wolf S4 cams on stock valvetrain, without the dual guide mod and i've let it sit on the rev limiter with no problems ever. Simply because the ramp of the cam lobe is properly designed.

Do you have an engine damper? I'd use that and the dual valve guide like mentioned.

The readily available engine dampeners are worthless. Ever taken one apart? It's just a little piece of rubber inside that the rod pushes on... And I don't know how that would have any effect on his valvetrain anyways...

Beat me to the punch. I think I threw mine out after taking it apart and seeing the two rubber bushings LOL.

I have heard how some guys do just fine with stock valvetrain depending on cams and others have good luck with duel guides.

Personally I plan on going with Mazworx VVL/VE swap. lol Will just save me a lot of time and a headache considering my car will be sitting on the Limiter often enough.

The effect is on how most of the time the rocker arms fly off after missing a shift. Guess what the motor does when that happens? It jumps. If you don't believe that they help in that department then go talk to some of the old head drifters in japan. I had one give me his old dampner and then had him explain to me why it helps.

Don't believe me I could care less. Don't take my advice then. I have mine on there for piece of mind and haven't had any problems.

What is the price and turn-around time if we send a set of stock rocker arms to you?

That's because with a properly designed cam (JWT and only a couple others) it will not throw a rocker while hitting rev limiter. The cheaper cams have this problem and that's why people need to do the dual guide mod amongst other things. Doing the dual guide mod with the "good cams" is even more beneficial.

Or you could try not having shitty engine mounts that let the motor bang around in the engine bay. Regardless I have solid mounts so an engine dampener is useless. And like I said all of those "dampeners" are just a rod pushing on a chunk of rubber inside. It's just sad.

I just picked up a built motor from a guy that went a different route and he has the BC 272 cams installed with BC springs/retainers and gears. I was all set on sending off my rockers to Mazworx but found this drop in solution.

Just so you know I called Mazworx and they said that they need your entire head minus the cams/caps so they can cut your rockers and then properly reshim the head with new guides. Turn around was said not to be too long but you will have to send the entire head. They need to update their webiste so there is no more confusion.

$70 for the dual rocker conversion and $140 for disassemble and assemble with re-shim. SO $210 plus the shipping of the head there. The $140 includes return shipping.
