Driveshaft Problem
 

I am wondering if an 1 piece STEEL driveshaft is worth the upgrade? I am doing an auto to 5 speed swap. Is there really a BIG difference? I read thru some threads all I know is that the engine revs faster and faster throttle response, but is it A LOT faster? This will be installed in a KA.

YES! I would definitely get one. The biggest difference is the weight, but you also have to think of the extra play in the joints and the fact that there is a damper in the middle that can wear out over the years. Plus since youre already under there, might as well change it once instead of twice if you have the money.

tell you the truth tho i ended up buying a 1pc aluminum during my sr20/auto-manual swap...so i shouldnt speak hahaha, but like trickz said it can be a good investment for the future

I run nothing but Driveshaft Shop 1-piece steel propeller shafts on all my street driven vehicles. It is worth it to me.

Different compared to what? Stock? Aluminium? Carbon fibre?

I assume you're comparing to stock.

For a perfect new stock propeller shaft, the difference is significant. Less lag. Less vibration.

For a worn out propeller shaft, which you will probably get if you buy used, there is no comparison. The steel 1piece is much better.

The response is faster because energy isn't wasted twisting the 2piece shaft.

What do you think is a lot?

Someone should install a shaft sensor on the output shaft of the gearbox and one on the input of the diff. Then datalog and compare the lag between the two sensors for a 1piece vs. a 2piece.

Yes, I am comparing to stock. Stock vs. Steel. What mean by faster is faster response. Does it have to be Driveshaft shop driveshaft in order to be a quality shaft? How about other shafts like R&D Factory which I look through.

Check with the vendor. Most of the "custom" driveshafts I've seen are actually rebadged DSS shafts, which is not a bad thing at all.

I *heart* DSS.

Wouldn't a 1pc. driveshaft create more vibration, because you no longer can absorb vibration. Would a 1pc. driveshaft be bad for a DD? Is it bearable? I just want to know what I am getting into.

But when that carrier bearing wears out, Its like $100 dollars under the cost of a one piece steel shaft.

So you might as well do it if you can afford it.

i have a 1 piece aluminum driveshaft from DSS. i fucking love the response. LOL


i do have vibrations because i havent replaced any motor mounts i got =)

No. The 2 piece has more vibration because the 2 pieces can rotate around the center carrier support. The 1 piece is a straight shot from the gearbox to the diff, and moves together with the gearbox if there is drivetrain movement.

With a 2 piece, vibration is transferred to the carrier support and the chassis.

I have driven over 3+ years on my 1pc with SR and V8. There is no problem for me.
