Maximum TIRE(Rubber) fitment thread

This thread is for people with s chassis cars who own or know someone who owns s chassis car(s) with maximum rubber and maximum wheel width for grip in mind -- whether this be for street or track or both.

It's for the slowly growing crowd of enthusiasts who are more swayed towards lapping/maximum grip from their car as opposed to drift or looks. Those who own their car and attempt to make their car meet or exceed the performance of modern sports cars, supercars heck even hypercars... whether they just have a street car and do it for personal achievement or race it at the track. Whatever this may be to you if you are someone who likes to see/have/drive on with 255 on an 8.5", 275/285 on a 10", 3xx on a 11"/12", etc... please post. The ever growing small crowd and trend needs it's own recognition..
. we need to change the stereotype that S chassis cars are only good for the slammed look or drift. It's unfortunately a small crowd but people don't know what they are missing.

Post in the following manner:

To give you guys an idea of the beauty of what this thread is attempting to do ... I will honor two of the best known S chassis cars out there.

One belonging to j-rho and one belonging to aceinthehole, I admire both cars and owners and they have given me alot of inspiration to take my time to rebuild my s13 for better things in mind one more time :)

Aceinthehole: 285/30/18 on 18x10 front (I should let him do the post himself hope he doesn't mind, he needs no introductions)

For those curious how my car looked when I first restored it:

Car when purchased for 800$ almost undrivable:
http://home.cogeco.ca/%7Eangelo-arif.../purchased.JPG

Parts that were slowly piling up before restoration:
http://home.cogeco.ca/%7Eangelo-arif...t/oldparts.JPG

After the car was all put back together for the first time:
http://home.cogeco.ca/%7Eangelo-arif...0project/1.jpg

http://home.cogeco.ca/%7Eangelo-arif...0project/5.jpg
http://home.cogeco.ca/%7Eangelo-arif...0project/6.jpg

As things stand right now however, my car is completely stripped and I intend to redo it all over again, I'm just slowly again collecting parts, I know what I want, but can't afford it time/money wise at the moment, I have family priorities but I do love this hobby and my car :) But I love my family first :)

Yes I know, I don't have fat rubber or wheels, but this is just for those who were bitching attacking me if I even own an S chassis car/etc...

__________________________________________________________________________
As a note:
The last thread went to poo, but I spoke to ThatGuy and he said lets keep it civilized and peaceful -- it'll be cool. Lets not start a retarded war, we are all 240 owners. As soon as I created the other thread people started jumping, bitching and negging. So what? Some people are sick of the slammed/stretched/whatever look. No need for drama... get over it. I acted a little immature myself by buying into the stupid neg reps/hate/stupid comments and saying stupid things back.

But lets make it clear! If you want the stretched and slammed, -10 camber, -100 offset, 100mm spacers, 4" lowered frame scraping, 195 on a 9" 265 on a 12" look and want to prove yours is better and more pimp than the next guy go to the following two links, they are threads related to that trend.

#/f/showthread.php?t=136032&page=13

#/f/showthread.php?t=129865

The point of this thread is to have a thread for people who are NOT for the above and who recognize the above as what they are sick of seeing, because it's turning 240s into the civics of the 90s.... and thus are against this trend... but they are still s chassis owners but are not for drift or show, but instead interested in extracting maximum grip performance out of the s chassis cars... something that the s chassis car was always stated as being incapable of.

To make another thing very clear! In those two stretch/slammed/whatever threads if you post something that is 'not stretched enough' or not slammed/flush enough, you get negged for it, made unwelcome, called names, etc... because you're not cool enough lol... Likewise in this thread, the same applies vice versa. Don't come into here to bitch about it. Go to those two threads instead if you want what was mentioned that this thread is not about instead. Leave the grip/maximum rubber thread alone, no hurt feelings for anyone, no drama, just love :)

SO LETS KEEP IT PEACEFUL...!

KA24DESOneThree 11-30-2007 01:06 PM

You didn't put down Jason's tire/wheel sizes, which are:
285/30R18 F on 18x11
315/30R18 R on 18x12.5

Don at PDM was running 275/40R17 on the front of his hatch.

a_ahmed 11-30-2007 01:10 PM

My bad, sorry I did not know j-rho's specs, I also don't know aceinthehole's complete specs, so I just mentioned the front sizes as best as I knew. I wouldn't mind if he posted himself here. I just wanted to give people an idea of what this thread is about. If people make their own post, lets follow the format I mentioned in the beginning of the first post. My bad :)

And thank you :)

And yes as far as memory recalls when Don ran the 5zigen 17x10+12 wheels (with I think 8mm spacers) he was running 275/40/17 on the front... but 275/40/17 is quite tall so it took him alot of work to get it working... 285/30/18 is almost absolutely perfect, its 2mm taller than stock.

What are the spcs in the rear of the S14?
do you also know the size rims in the pic where the car is lifted and no tires?

Slidin240Wayz 11-30-2007 01:22 PM

This makes great sense.

Grip diving is fun.

FWIW the front S14 allows 17x9+20 without rubbing coilover. The rest can be calculated on the wheel spec calculator.

^I believe one guy with a silver sil80 runs 17x9+20 with 245/40/17 and it's pretty flush with stock fenders. Looks hot too and its an awesome track car :) I hope he posts in here :) Not sure if anyone else rocks the stock fenders and more rubber though. Time will tell. I intend to get aftermarket fenders anyways :)

Most people don't even notice the tires because of how clean the widebody is... with higher offset I could stuff some 335s back there.

KA24DESOneThree 11-30-2007 10:23 PM

You have a drag car. Why do you have 255s up front?

Let's keep this pure, people. NO 205s/215s/225s/235s. Everyone and their mother can rock those on an S13 with no fender modifications at all, and they all happen to be on the small side.

YOUR CHASSIS: S13 coupe

WHEELS: Volk CE28N 17x9 +15
Volk TE37 17x9 +15

TIRES: Bridgestone Potenza RE01-R 245/40R17

MISC DETAILS: Suspension work. Rolled and pulled fenders. Camber at ~3.2* front, ~2.5* rear or something similar. Modified inner seam and pounded out wheel well. Note: +15 won't work in the front of an S13 if you're running KTS coilovers or similar and a 255 width tire. The tire rubs on the perches. The clearance is minimal at +10, but it does not rub.

PURPOSE OF CAR: Street/Track

PICTURES: None of the fitment. The front tires are under the fenders, the rear stick out a bit because a fellow 240er stole my roller.

The only reason I posted this is because people always are asking if 245s or 9s will fit in the front of a 240, despite the fact that there are many, many instances of tires and wheels as big or bigger fitting easily.

MrChow 11-30-2007 10:25 PM

^^^ like that rule about tire sizes.

3.2 camber???

The car spends more time on the street than at the track so stopping power is important.

plus it would shitty with 225's up front and 315's in the rear.

KA24DESOneThree 11-30-2007 10:40 PM

Around -3.2* camber, MrChow. I'm not sure what it is right now, as the car's been futzed with a bit in its downtime.

Nothing special over here but decently wide?

225/40/18 f (going 245/40/18)

18x8.5 +25 f
18x9.5 +30 r (i know they're weak offsets for NISMOs)

Awesome thread, but I dont think people should be posting up pics of tires narrower than a 255 series. Especially in the rears! Post up rear end shots showing how wide your actual contact patch is-

a_ahmed 12-01-2007 09:43 AM

Let 235/245 be the absolute minimum :) It's okay, like 235 rt615 are wider than most 235 for example... so its alright but this thread should be for 245+ folks :) It's okay :) I am quite happy with the postings so far :D It should encourage more people :)

front could probably go wider. i went from 225/40 to 245/40 and i feel theres still a bit room for more without changing anything.

edit: nvm what i said about the rear. i checked today and there is tons of room for more. i could jam my index finger in there no problem. at least 1-1.5 inches more clearance available.

People:
Please keep in mind that this thread is about maximum rubber and wheel fitment. It is NOT a picture thread for your tame rubber on small wheels.

It is not a "post a picture of your soon-to-be wheel setup next to your car."
We don't care about your drag radials or your R-compounds unless they're on the car. Fitment doesn't matter if the wheel/tire isn't actually mounted to the car.

Everyone and their mother has fit a 225 under stock fenders, it's nothing new.

Let's keep this thread as unadulterated as possible.

Someone needs to edit out anything with less than a 255 tire on a 9 inch wide wheel then make it a sticky.

what was the exact sizing on those AMEs?

Going to 17x9s and R-Comps soon.

Yes the 255 did fit on the 8 inch wheel + buldge. I love buldge

Once they are hot enough with 30 psi in them they will barely hold a 400whp exit acceleration in a 2nd gear turn. But still this is the best traction Ive had so far, on linear acceleration or exit, better than hankook rs-2 and ecstas.

This Thread was created to seek out Non-Stretched Tires and Non-Excessive Camber.

Thread starter was told he could have the Thread if he played nice with the Pro-Stretched Tire crowd, and reported any problems without fights here.

As long as that is happening, I see no problem leaving it open, PHLIP.

now that's what i'm talking about. how about some wheel specs? did you even roll the fender at all?

Gumballf355 12-05-2007 05:53 AM

Looks like just a roll with slight flaring... I bet this gives alot of S14 owners some hope. Imagine if you will, 285/30/18s and 315/30/18s. WOW. Not too many cars put down that kind of rubber. Your drag car should have a license plate that reads "MAGNUMS" and then on the frame have it say PORNOGRAPHICALLY HUGE RUBBERS.

flares make anything possible. if Prok0 ran flares he could fit 355s or something obnoxious. it's impressive because it's on a virtually stock body.

Just to clarify, that isnt my car, although I know the guy who owned it at the time..

Wheel specs, not really sure other then they are 17x10 mas italy wheels made for a stang.. So offsets probably in the +20 to +30 range.

And the fender was rolled.

isnt 315's about 11.50" - 12.00" wide? I don't have 315's but I am Running 11.50 M:T drag Radials!! I am running a 35mm offset.

Someone needs to post up Sasha's setup, here goes. His racecar was 18x9.5 RPF1 front with 275/35/18 RA1 and 18x10.5 rear with 305/35/18. Not sure on offsets, check ziptied if you really want to know. Worked well for his endurance racing purposes. I'm assuming since he recently parted the car out and was selling lots of damaged body parts that it got crashed.

285's on a LM GT4? I hope you have a 10" wide LM GT4 because I have them too and I'm running 9.5" back (common size) and 275 is the biggest you can safely go.

Actually, LM-GT4s are either 9.5 or 10.5.

Whatever, I meant at least a 10" wide. I do not remember the exact widths they come in, but the most common are 8.5 front and 9.5 rear. And upon further investigation a 285 MIGHT fit depending on the tire, but it'd be a little too big to fit on the rim if it was me.

articdragon192 12-06-2007 11:24 PM

We've done a 285 on a 9.5j wheel before at work. It's very possible.

turtl631 12-07-2007 12:47 AM

You can definitely go bigger than 275 on a 18x9.5" wheel. Stock class autocrossers with RX8s and Solstices with 18x8" wheels run 285/30 all the time. Most 285/30s are rated for use on a 9.5" wheel. It might not have the best contact patch on a wheel that's on the narrow side of its rated range, but it will fit on there and be safe.

sideview_180sx 12-07-2007 01:04 AM

i noticed essentially autoX, and drag guys posted there setup. yet I've only seen one road race minded car (that being sasha, who has a z33 to race with for next season). I know in some instances you are limited by tire width due to class and what not. The point of this thread seems lost to me, with out at least digging into the area where jason rhoades and aceinhole really spend the money on. suspension. what good is having massive amounts of rubber if the suspension isn't up to the task.

275 isn't necessary on our cars. hell if we are road racing 255/40/17 RA1 or NT-01s should be fine enough without going widened fenders.

turtl631 12-07-2007 01:13 AM

This thread is about large wheel/tire fitment, not an overall strategy for building a track car.

Aceinhole had D2 coilovers until very recently. Clearly, big tires were of benefit to him despite his less-than-ideal suspension.

Have you tested various tire widths by comparing track times? Sure, 245s or 255s are probably adequate and the best choice for most, but that's not to say that larger tires won't turn faster laptimes. I'm guessing Sasha wasn't running 275 f/305 r just for looks.

For looks? I doubt it. Once you start pushing high hp and tq a wider wheel is highly desirable, if not, needed.

gsracer FTW!

I run 275s on my 9 inch rims, and would have to concerns about saftly running a 285, 285 would be considered... but with low profile tires you start to push it there if you want to handle.

My car sees the road course. I dont go door to door racing, but do HPDE. I also do 6-7 drag days a year, and 7+ auto-x.

Instead of going 10mm wider (doesn't do that much) just get a stickier compound.

I didnt say i needed to go bigger. I was saying that I wouldn't have any concerns with going bigger then the size I have on a 9inch rim. Like earlier someone stated that its not safe to have a 285/295 on a 9.5 rim

jlkmotox 12-08-2007 01:09 PM

I don't have any pictures but on my s14 i have 18x9.5 with +12 offset MB Drifter wheels and 275/35/18 yokahama advan neova's on all 4. the front has wide body fenders and i pulled the rear out about an inch with a fender roller. i had to run about -2.5 camber in the front and about -2 on the rear. on the rear there was still room to go in about an inch in and use wider-less offset wheels. probably could have fit 315's under there. but i like the way it looks now.

50mm rear fenders and 20mm front fenders(not enough, I'm going to end up making custom ones to fit 275's in front)

I'm really not sure exactly... I measured them once a few years ago. I think it was something like +12 in front and -6 in the rear. My numbers could be off. They aren't really sold with offset sizes; you order the rim halves by width. The front fit without a spacer but it is very close to the coilover, I couldn't add any more to the inner rim half. There is plenty of room for more inner rim on the rear though.

Front -
outter rim - 1.5
inner rim - 8

Rear -
outter rim - 3
inner rim - 7

I'm ordering new outter 2" halves for the front and 9" inner halves for the rear. I had one fatigue crack on me. See the crack going through all the bolt holes. So I decided to go for maximum width since I'm ordering new parts anyway.
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/DSC01983.jpg

As a note I didn't order the current sizes. I picked up the wheels 2nd hand from a 2001 ford mustang GT2 racecar. That is why the wheel offset isn't quite ideal yet.
