lightweight driveshaft
 

In the market for a new driveshaft (J30 lsd, scratches on input shaft) so I might as well get a lightweight one. Where can I get one? How much are the carbon fiber ones going for? And does anyone make/sell aluminum ones? this is for S14 w/ ABS since I got the J30 lsd.

I heard $600-800 and actually they both cost the same amount there was a thread somewhere where people were talking about the advantages of both and I think alum. won?

400 bucks for aluminum

the thing aboiut CF is that if you drop the Drive shaft the cf one will just fray and the aluminum will fly arround and take shit out. I got aluminum for my S13 and its been fine though (and not to mention cheeper). I got it at enjukuracing.com. Good service and you save becuase there not in CA.

any for s14? nothing on enjuku's site, I've emailed them before and came back saying they don't make shafts for s14.

okey, i just left the enjukuracing site and the one that i saw was priced at $999, what are you guys looking at? please let me know, cuase ive run into a prob with my swap, propeller shaft is too long. I got the black top into a s13 and cant finish now. HELP.

go to a custom driveshaft place, they will build you an aluminum driveshaft whatever lenght you want and it will be cheaper than 400

is that what u did? if so how much did it cost you.....

search here on zilvia from a thread on this awhile back. also hit up here http://www.pstds.com/driveshafts.cfm if you know you exact specs of the driveshaft you want made.

Wow, been searching google and yahoo for an hour and can't find driveshafts for cheaper than what S14DB posted. I might just try to get one now.

i believe you can find a pretty good aluminum one on ebay for $375. it's a fidanza

look in the phonebook and either look for a driveshaft place, or if you can't find one find a place that does fabrication and ask them if they do it, or if they have a place that the get it done at. If there is a circle track anywhere within 500 miles of you then I guarantee you can find a place that can build you a cheap driveshaft for cheap.

fidanza makes a aluminum flywheel... i've never seen a fidanza 240sx aluminum driveshaft.

driveshaft shop = best advice

if you can't find a good shop nearby, then just buy one online.

has anyone gotten these? my link has a note saying the metal collars on the tranny
need to get banged out for the shaft to fit. I don't really wanna do that to the tranny.

What I have always wondered, how much does the stocker weigh?

i thought it was somewhere like 23lbs or sumin, but i could be wrong

Aluminum is pretty sketchy, for starters if it busts your tunnel will be shredded apart. Also there have been instances where and aluminum driveshaft snapped and it fell and hit the ground, the driveshaft then stcuk into the ground and flipped the car.

Did you ever wonder why most driveshafts are made in 2 pieces with a flexible elbow in the center? Well now you know.

good luck getting your car to flip, they did that on myth busters, they had to try to do it, had to be a perfect crack in pavement to catch the shaft and it also only poped the rear end up in the air, didnt flip, and with our car we have a slip yoke, it just throws the shaft around till it falls off, my friends nissan truck did that, snapped at 50 mph at the rear yoke and just dropped out of the tranney and no more go.

The drive shafts are made in 2pc's to reduce NHV. They don't have to balance the shaft as well(lower tolerances).

Corvettes have had aluminum driveshafts for years between the engine and tranny and the halfshafts.

This is an old tale from when people couldn't weld alum well. The thing that breaks now days is the U-joints. Hence why myth busters tried to break the joint.

Also, some people claim that CF shafts shred when they have at least 2x the torsional strengh of steel. Some of the high end ones are even stronger with a more complex wrap.

Ive got an aluminum driveshaft from the driveshaftshop and it rocks. The throttle response is now crisper and overall a great upgrade.

The chance of the aluminum piece of the shaft breaking is nil. When those shafts break they snap at the welds where the u-joints were welded on and that rarely happens.

If you want real answers to your questions call Driveshaftshop and talk to Frank, he will explain everything to you, not someone saying your car will flip over so thats why they make 2-piece shafts. :tweak:

Driveshaft driven into trunk/ and or gas tank still isnt pleasent, and aluminum is like abs plastic, it will shatter.

Oh great post you moron. Hmmmm how many thousands of cars run an aluminum driveshaft without problems. I had a 400hp mustang driven hard daily with a $225 aluminum mustang racing driveshaft for over 2 years with zero problems.

go to a driftshaft shop its definetly cheaper then having one bought across the states... there easily made and balanced... probably alot cheaper anthony.....


to answer ur problems with bending and shatter.... bunch of my buddies go thru reg drive shafts all the time with their 4wd toy trucks.. and they beat it pretty hard scraping rocks... all it takes is just one good kink in the pipe to make it bend with lots of torque...... i dont think it really matters if u run a alluminum or a steel one... its all personal preference... and its gonna give way in certain circumstances..

come on people, the real reason that you shouldn't have an aluminum driveshaft is that aliens will fly here from Mars and abduct you, if you're going to pull safety concerns out of your ass people, at least be creative with it.

last time i checked Corvettes, C1500's, 2500HD's, 2000+ Cameros, and Firebirds all use Aluminum Driveshafts...
