sr20det rocker shims
 

Hey all, question if anyone can help me.

I'm putting my head back on my block and i can not find a guide to tell me which shim goes where for the rocker arms. Theres 2 different ones. a smooth shim and one with a rivet. any info would help. thanks!

Look at the rocker arms and it will tell you.

You REALLY should be putting back the exact shims/guides in the exact spots they came off of (i.e. on the right valves).

I know that on one side (exhaust or intake), the slotted ones (guides) go on the side toward the firewall for each rocker, and then it is the opposite on the other side.....just can't remember which side.

now i found this pic that tells the placement for the rivet one vs. the smooth one, but i cannot find ANYTHING that lets me know which one goes where to the specs.

Yes it suppose to come off the exact spot where it came from, but if you just happen to not know which side goes which, doesnt one end of the rocker arm have an indentation (orr whatever you call it) that sits in the shim with the slot. Thats how i recall, although i havnt been near a sr20 for months now.

On my SRs, it was always on the right side looking from the HLAs.

They don't tell you the specs you need for each one because you have to get them measured out. Some people are fine just throwing them in there while others have thrown rockers. Don't risk it.

SO whats my best solution to getting either these old shims or buying new shims in and getting my motor back working?

New guides and then measure out new ones with the tool listed on the site above

intake side, the guide goes toward the front shim goes toward rear, exhaust side is vice-versa.

So if you have the two prongs of the rocker facing upward, then the guide always is on the right.

SO since i didnt lable where each rocker shim or guikde went, do i ned to buy new shims and guides? if i buy new ones, is there a something that can tell me which new shim and guides go to where they r suppose to go?

Do this, and you'll be fine.

In fact, the guide comes in only one size, and the shims are made to match the height of the guide, so the rocker arms/cams wears correctly. Also, that your 2 valves open the same height.

so pretty i need to order new shims and guides. order shims to the size of the guides. then put them all back into the head. does it matter where in the head each one goes? or do they all have a certain spot? this is so confusing lol.

You got it WRONG. Guides come only in one size from Nissan(P/N : 13218-53J00). I suggest you check your old one(if they are all the same size), and reuse them. After that, facing the engine, you calculate the difference in height between the left(with guide on this one) valve and the right valve, with the tool posted earlier. You write that number on a paper, and do this for every cylinder, intake and exhaust side. So you'll have 8 measurements. Then you order the shims that you need, and replace them at the right spot. So yes, THEY ALL HAVE THEIR OWN SPOT!!!

Do not place them anywhere, or you'll have a very loud valvetrain, that will wear out prematurely.

If you don't understand that, you should really bring that to an engine shop that knows what they're doin...

o okay ya i kinda understand that more. i got a engine guy im gonna have look at it. but i wont put it all together till i get everything correct. dont wanna blow my s14 sr20det lol. to hard to get em haha.

you dont need to buy anything other than a tool to measure them. it's a pain in the ass to match them all back up, but thats what i would do, because they are like $5 each.

well from what i been reading ppl have beem saying to buy new shims cause of wear. if i dont have to that would be awesome.

if you are on HLA's, it doesnt matter if they are worn, as long as they measure the same per each rocker arm.

Old thread I know, but I referred to it recently since I got my shims/guides mixed up.
This post is wrong. Intake side, the guide is toward the rear of the car, the shim is in the front. Exhaust side, opposite. The FSM page 47 and other FSM references show this.

Or just run dual guide shims and be done with it...
