JBB's redtop s14 build
Hello!
I am going to be copying over my build from one of those other 240sx sites. So I got introduced to the import scene when I was around 19. I was hooked and started searching for my first toy. I picked up this 89 s13 coupe and loved it. My plan was "save 2 grand to buy an SR and have FUN!", I was a little naive at the time. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...90411-1844.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...90411-1818.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...90411-1819.jpg The ride height was terrible and it smelled like a dog (not surprised since the redneck I bought it from showed up with his pit bull in the back seat when I went to check it out/buy it). I had fun with it for a little while and even though it was an "old car" it still got looks. Well it rained particularly hard one night and when I went to start the car up the next morning, nothing happened. There was a live power cable for a sub in the trunk sitting in the wheel well (lowest point) and apparently the trunk didnt seal well because it was sitting in a puddle of water. I fried several relays. After replacing them I started finding more and more things wrong with the motor, including a broken woodruff key...I eventually ran out of cash trying to get it running right and just sold it. That was around 2009 or so. Fast forward to 2011 and I picked up a somewhat clean and stock 95 s14. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0build/s14.jpg Non-SE, 5 speed, hard top, power options, about 140k miles and nothing majorly wrong with it. Typical 20 year old car issues...peeling clearcoat on the hood, some surface rust on the trunk lid, etc. Small crack on the dash and weird cut looking marks on the door panels. Nothing that really couldnt be fixed. I tucked away some money for a while and got to a point that I felt comfortable starting my project so I began placing orders (end of the year 2012). For the past 5 years I had planned on ordering my SR from oaskajdmmotors but I did a little reading before placing my order and read on a subaru forum actually that most of their inventory at that time was tsunami flood damaged motors. I also heard that it was pretty easy to get the short end of the stick when dealing with purchases made out of the country. I decided to go with jspecauto.com since they were located in virginia. I bought a redtop from them (through ebay actually, for the points and added paypal protection). It looked pretty clean, they claimed it only had 54,000 miles, and they had a compression test video. 174, 173, 170, 174. I thought it seemed pretty good even though it was a little overpriced ($2,299 fee shipping). I bought it on a sunday and it was delivered the following thursday. I unwrapped it and snapped these two pictures while my friend I started looking it over. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0241.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0242.jpg My buddy was over and we decided to just give it a look-over that night. As we started inspecting things, we noticed that there were a lot of parts that looked pretty much brand new. After further inspection, it turns out that just about everything that looked brand new actually had a little dab of green paint...we thought maybe this is how they had marked parts that they had replaced? Who knows...anyways, the parts that had the paint were: injectors, throttle body and cable assembly, idle air control valve, and the throttle positioning sensor. Some other parts looked brand new: water pump, the belts, and the power steering pump. One thing that caught our eye, that Im still a little concerned about today, was the ECU. It had 2 stickers on the top, "TBO Racing Parts For Racing Purposes Use Only", and "FAST Made in Japan". There were also "fast" stickers along the sides, so that if the ECU was opened up you would have to break the stickers. I attempted looking these companies up, but I found very little information. All I could find about TBO was that they made aero parts, which wouldnt make any sense why there would be a TBO sticker on the ECU. Secondly, the information for FAST was alaso very limited -- I found that it stands for "Fuel Air Spark Timing" and apparently was a tuning company in Japan? Im guessing that this ECU is chipped, and Im really hoping that the tune on here isnt funky...and that it actually runs for now http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0240.jpg Anyways, this thread is going to be pretty picture intensive. I took all of the pictures with my phone, its an iphone 4s, so they might not be the best of quality but I dont have a digital camera. I might not list a description for every picture, so if you have any questions just ask. Ill start with the parts that Ive been ordering: My first order came in: (enjukuracing) Isis m-spec FMIC with piping pre-flanged for a Greddy BOV. I heard that this front mount is identical to the Greddy M-spec. Mishimoto aluminum radiator Circuit sports metal coolant overflow tank (my plastic one is all broken and the plastic was flaking into the coolant) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0220.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0222.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0221.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0223.jpg 2nd thing to come in was my walbro 255 high pressure fuel pump http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0226.jpg 3rd order came with some exciting parts: (phase2motortrend) OEM water pump (didnt snap a picture) ARP head studs (also didnt take a picture) Circuit Sports 3" downpipe with a flex section Exedy stage 1 organic clutch ACT streetlite flywheel Greddy type RZ BOV http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0234.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0236.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0232.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0233.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0237.jpg Then I received order 4 and 5 on the same day so Ill lump them all together: (amazon and FRsport) AEM Uego A/F gauge AEM Truboost b00st controller/gauge Optima redtop battery ARP rod bolts Summit racing battery relocation kit (I guess I only took a picture of the power cable..) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0246.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0249.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0250.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0253.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0252.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0254.jpg I had another order from Enjuku, however Ive only received 1 part so far: Circuit sports 3" turbo elbow/up-pipe Not yet shipped from this order: steering wheel gauge pod s14 to s13 A/C conversion bracket OEM timing chain NGK iridiums belts http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0256.jpg order 7 was actually the very first order I placed...and one of the last to be delivered (z1motorsports) Nismo motor/tranny mounts z1 silicone radiator hoses OEM oil pump assembly s13 redtop SR20 gasket kit http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0363.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0365.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0366.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0367.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0362.jpg Also from order 7, but directly from GReddy: Greddy type RS 3" exhaust (I really really really wanted the TI-C, however, it was discontinued a year ago. I called just about every performance shop I could find and NO ONE had one left. I was told that the RS is the exact same exhaust, just minus the titanium / burnt tip.) Greddy oversized oil pan (I guess I didnt take a picture of this..) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0371.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0373.jpg Order 8 was from FRsport again, Circuitsports 480cc oil catch can Circuitsports 250cc oil catch can You can just call me TwoCan Sam!! My buddy has a pretty good idea for running these dual catch cans, more on this later http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0382.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0385.jpg Here's the pile of parts that has been slowly growing in my 2nd bedroom. Coming home every day brings such mixed feelings, Im happy to see these and know that it will be awesome one day soon, but its also depressing looking at so much money just sitting there that I cant do anything with yet. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0368.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0369.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...d/IMG_0370.jpg So thats about it for parts for now, if anyone has any comments or suggestions please let me know. As a side note, although these circuitsports items are made in china, the quality is far greater than expected. The welds on these things are absolutely sick as well, someone definitely took their time crafting this stuff. |
pretty sweet pile of parts there!

Cant wait to see how all of this turns out!! I love coming home to parts!!

at first i thought that valve retainer tool was too big and for domestics. I ended up ordering a smaller one (that only came as a pair with the same sized one that I already had). the small one was TOO small. I placed an order for a better style valve keeper tool.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps8dc26903.jpg Well a few days after ordering that new tool, before it arrived, I tried the original tool again and it DID work, I just wasnt hitting that shit hard enough. Found out from some people on this forum that the SR is an interference motor and you dont need to hook up an air compressor. just set the current cylinder to TDC to prevent the valves from dropping. I was retarded and didnt see one of the oil galleys and didnt block it off with anything. I dropped a valve keeper down in and heard it drop quite a distance, DOH! Dumbass! I tried air in a can, tried pouring oil down the galley, even tried a magnetic strip tied to some fishing line but no luck. !!!! will have to get back to that. Got busy reading someone elses build thread and they showed a gasket that they put on their oil strainer/pickup. WTF the FSM doesnt mention a gasket, I installed mine with a little liquid gasket just to be safe. This made me worried, so I ordered that gasket and took mine off and cleaned off the liquid gasket. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps5cbedbbf.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb2bb7efa.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...sccf51197.jpeg got the wrong sized gasket and had to wait for the correct one to come in http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...sd6d3c304.jpeg Back to the valve seals I pulled the oil baffle plate and got really lucky, the keeper was sitting right there ontop of it. I was thinking I'd have to pull the upper oil pan, and maybe rotate the motor which would mean bleeding the lifters since the head was installed at this point. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps7c18ac64.jpg so I go to use my new sweet lever style valve keeper tool. It only came with 3 small bolts, 3 fat bolts, and some bolts without threads. I thought that was weird since you need -4- to bolt the horse shoe sides down to where the cam caps connect. I figured Id try and see how snug it is with 1 bolt on the one side. Im torquing down the bolt slowly and all of a sudden the head turns sideways. WTF. I tried reversing it and SNAP, the damn bolt head snapped off http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...se53d4a47.jpeg the one thing I was trying to avoid was taking the head back off. I tried a ryobi screw extractor and my hole got off center and it did not work. my roommate and I tried some reverse thread drill bits, which just didnt want to bite and turn the bolt. we went to harbor freight and got a pretty aggressive screw extractor kit. It started turning the bolt but was hitting the sidewall, so we were like....lets give it a little tap with the rubber mallet to straighten it out. DUMB! snapped the screw extractor off inside the broken bolt. this is turning into a disaster. We pulled the head and I found a local shop (for hondas..) that said they could get it out. It would normally be $10 but because the extractor is broken off in there it would be $20. Im like ok, sweet, this isnt so bad afterall and I drop the head off. At this point in time Im unemployed so I have a lot of free time but not a lot of free money :p I drop the cylinder head off and they said they would get to it the next day. 3 days later I call them (several times, because any time I call before 2pm its a spanish guy that answers who doesnt speak english other than "call back after 2 for ray") and they say they cant get the bolt out because of the material of the extractor, and they actually ask me about cutting the section out to remove it and welding it back in. Im thinking to myself these guys cant be serious, how is that even possibly considered an option. I told them no way in hell are you cutting a chunk out of my cylinder head and welding it back in. They said ok, let us look at it a bit more and see what we can do. 2 1/2 weeks later, I call them up and they say they cant get it out and start asking me how much a new cylinder head is because I should probably just buy a new one. .............. I go pick up my head and say thanks for the effort guys went down the road to zFever (now Fever Racing) man, what an awesome shop!! its literally like a fantasy land for adults. the owner, Doug, is the coolest guy ever. He tried welding a nut to it (even let me hold it with some pliers while he did the welding). We tried 3 times but it did not work :\ on the plus side I got to see a ton of cool cars, talk to the owner for a while, and he referred me to a REAL machine shop in north Tampa (galaxy machining, I recommend this place highly) Doug, the owner of zFever, has a pretty sick NSX, an s13.5 vert, and an r33 as a daily http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps413247c2.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps08a7cdfb.jpg Also saw a ton of z32's, a couple 240z and 280z, handful of s13's, a good amount of s14's alternator died in my 240 on my way home from school one night about 10pm. barely limped home with no lights, every time my hazards flashed my car would jerk--but I made it!! this totally killed my optima redtop (purchased through amazon, they conveniently have since removed this purchase from my order history and I cant do a return on it). had to swap in a new alternator and battery. went for a cruise and I guess I didnt have the tension bolt tight enough because the belt popped off, took off my water pump belt on its way off, caused my engine to almost overheat, radiator hose burst off shooting coolant everywhere lol man what a day. got a replacement bolt, installed, new belts installed, and got back on the road. got the head back from the machine shop this evening. $155 to get the bolt out, heli-coil the cam cap section. He also cleaned and decked the bottom for me. Unfortunately, he says theres metal shavings in the head so Ill have to clean it. He mentioned that the easiest thing to do would be take it to napa for a hot tank, but Ive painted it so he recommended maybe cleaning it out with brake clean or carb cleaner got a new job at this point. took my head to NAPA to hot tank and yes, it took off all of the paint. While I was there I had them use their air tools to put some pulleys on :) (this is on a quest alternator, I also picked up a quest alt conversion bracket from CodyAce, just no pictures) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...s5f8f0307.jpeg head was super clean though before: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...seef84ffc.jpeg after: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...sed87c9cf.jpeg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb770cb72.jpg installed my LED tail lights and my seats http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps608528f6.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps6da05ae2.jpg |
had to paint the head a 2nd time :\
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psd7601fb8.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps0363d88c.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps205b398f.jpg deja vu http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psc86723de.jpg started installing new valve seals (got a set of supertech valve seals since I had previously installed 8 of the OEM ones from my rebuild kit and had to pull them for the hot tank, oems are way more expensive) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps1f3fa077.jpg picked up this HKS intake, thats that mushroom tip! (hodgetwins reference) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...s0d3c6775.jpeg started checking things out again for an idea of what it would look like http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps04dc6e7f.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps1cb4c837.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps0b376da1.jpg picked up these isis control arms (please dont flame) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...pse26af06e.jpg my lease ran up and my roommate had to get a place with his sister to help her out. I moved into a 1br with a detached 1-car garage. the garage wasnt available until a few days after I moved so I had to put all of my car parts in my dining room for a week lol. anyways, I got settled in and my friend came over to help me get the cams installed. Oh I forgot, I had to buy a new headgasket because when I pulled the head off to take it to the shop I tore a layer or two. Sweet waste of $60. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psac047368.jpg So we get the cams in and timed correctly. then we realize that we didnt install the "inside sub bolts" basically underneath the cam sprockets. you can get the intake one in no problem, but I couldnt torque down the exhaust side one due to the extra length on the exhaust cam sprocket (the part that the CAS connects to). faaaark. so we pull the cams and torque those bolts and the following weekend reinstall the cams and get them timed correctly. Im still driving my 240 with the KA because its a lot more fun to drive than my "daily" driver plymouth neon. at this point my gas tank (probably lines) starts leaking. Currently (to this day) i cant fill my tank up past half capacity or I will start dumping about 1/2 - 1 gallon of fuel when I turn the car off. Im thinking, and heard from others, that its probably the lines to the sending unit, I just havent had the time to tackle that project. Ill handle it when I go to install the walbro pump. started test fitting things on the SR http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps43797982.jpg my friends and I had an inside joke about me selling my 240 and getting a fiat 500. I had a fun moment convincing them that I sold both of my cars and picked up this one: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps5ee1c597.jpg went back to Fever Racing and had Doug cut my coolant line (from under the intake manifold) and weld a bead around the end since I will be using the tap on the s14 water neck. No pics here, sorry. Again, I have to mention how cool this guy is. He let me ask questions for an hour. I found out that they now own Enthalpy and he has convinced me to come back to have Martin tune my car when Im done. I will most definitely be doing this. Saw some more bad ass cars again, this time another R33 (GTR) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...pscdb31b06.jpg And this sick rb25 in a 280z http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps5566ca46.jpg |
Anyways
Installed those isis control arms, that was fun http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps8c395275.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps8c766136.jpg Had some more fun: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps507d173a.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps4a8ed3d9.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psca2de522.jpg I decided to take a different route with the initial install. I had rebuilt my T25 and was going to roll on stock boost for about a year or so but talking to Doug and how many times they have done 300hp tunes, I thought I would go down that path for now. I picked up an s15 turbo http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps97d036a8.jpg some s15 injectors http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb48d5038.jpg z32 maf http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps762b051b.jpg drain tube http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psd25977e9.jpg clocking adapters http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb07dfad8.jpg oil restrictor (turned out to not fit my line, it was -4 to .035) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps5a1381c7.jpg got these transmission gasket ss braided clutch line -3 to .04 restrictor (hope this doesnt hurt the turbo, i heard that ideally you want .032 http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psfad1466d.jpg installed my power brace and front control arms http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps57c6431c.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps78c64e71.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps0e13d69b.jpg thats where I am as of now. Ive had this engine since Oct. 2012 and have been slowly working 1 or 2 hours here and there every weekend. I know that a lot of people get these and throw them right in the weekend they get them, or do serious work and have them in quickly. I am not a mechanic, I had never even changed oil or done anything besides an audio install prior to ordering this motor. Im hoping to have it done soon. I just ordered poweredbymax comp coilovers (will be delivered 01/07/14). Im in talks with someone about buying their oem s15 front end. Looking to go 5 lug/z32 brakes/gramlight 57d in luminous yellow 17x9 in the next few months. Eventually would like to go with house of kolor galaxy grey paint but Ill probably do a matte black plastidip after the s15 front, jdm kouki rear bumper/valances/sideskirts. Power wise I think I will be happy with around 300hp from the s15 turbo. I originally wanted to ride stock for a year or so and then pick up a 2871r but we'll see how this goes as Im thinking about doing a drag oriented build after this car interior wise Im planning on a 350mm perforated nardi wheel with the dark aluminum spokes, nrg neochrome hub to match my ARC shift knob, and wrap my dash/console/headliner in perforated black leather with red stitching to match the nardi wheel. Will eventually remove the rear seats and build a nice box to house 2 10's, 2 6" mids, and 2 1" tweeters for highs. This is just going to be a fun/weekend car really, not planning on being a d1 hero. Any comments/suggestions are welcome, thanks! :) |
All i can say is great, build up, lol'd at the Fiat joke...
Cant wait to see her all done, any plans for, when you get the S15 front to change the color, that greenish blue, cannot be favored? -Kyle |
Haha, thanks man! Yes I plan on dipping the car matte black for a while and possibly going with house of kolor galaxy grey in the future
|
Sorry but....s15 front will ruin this car. Zenki or kouki with an Sr and nice paint and you will be breaking necks. But then again this is my personal opinion. I personally think that s15 fronts only look good on s15's.
But spending the time to do your motor right the first time like you have is great. I really like how the build is turning out! Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk |
nice job man, you might want to put a little oil on those suspension arms so they dont get seized up:)
|
Keep it Zenki man. But I will give you this......this is one of the best builds I've seen/read in a while. Very good list of parts, very descriptive, and a lot pictures.
Keep up the good work and you can see that you have been taking your time with this build. |
Very nice build up of a SR20.
I personally think Zenkis look more classy, which is my style. I totally think you should keep it. You can do a nice widebody kit or go all oem and turn heads either way. Put make sure you do all you of you body work then paint it. That makes it easier. Once again very nice build up. |
Some nice legit parts you got there, so far so good dont worry i'll be buying ISIS arms too lol
|
Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the kind words!
I know there's a lot of people who dont particularly like the s15 front on the 13/14 and that's okay, they are entitled to their opinions. I was actually originally going to go with a kouki front end but for basically the same amount of money and just a little bit more work I can have the 15 front. Any day of the week I can hop on craigslist or even the classifieds here and find a kouki to buy, however, I haven't seen very many with s15 front ends (that have been done correctly). I tried to include as many pictures as I could because I remembered back when I was still in the dreaming and scheming stage those were the types of build threads I loved to read. I would literally spend hours looking through pictures in people's threads thinking "hmm, thats neat" and compiling ideas. I hope that my pictures and some of my included stories will help those in the future to not make some of the same mistakes that I have made lol. I am pretty excited to get these coilovers in tomorrow but at the same time kind of disappointed to put them on with my terrible wheels ;D |
Got a couple things in today:
turbo locking plates new studs for the turbo -> elbow locking nuts for said studs t28 gasket kit (altho I wont be using some of these due to the dif clocking adapters) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps8210a04d.jpg |
I love it when OEM parts arrive, there is just something about them....
-Kyle |
I do enjoy some OEM equipment
I also enjoy these types of packages :) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps929cb84c.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps06b2d7d5.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps44192a37.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps2d77bbba.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psf8afea98.jpg |
Very nice job cleaning up the motor and whatnot. Nice that you decided to go with the T28, keep it simple and do not go S15 front. You'll be glad you didn't in the long run, and for the love of god please DO NOT plastidip your car. It is a huge waste of time, you are better off rocking a mismatched car for a while then getting a macco paintjob. Trust me, I like the way your build is going and I'll be watching.
|
very nice build and the abundance of pictures make this worth reading. Keep it up!
|
I installed my coilovers this weekend. Id upload the pictures but I ran out of time and wasnt able to adjust the fronts. The rear looks good, I will probably drop it another .5 or 1 inch. The front, however, is actually higher than my worn out stock suspension lol.
Side note. Well question. Ever since I installed my control arms, Ive been getting this squeeking metal noise. I saw on someone else's build that they used "copper grease" on all the threads on their arms. Is that to prevent this annoying squeeking noise?? Is there anything I can do post install to remedy it? I would hate to have to take them all off just to grease them up |
Alright dudes, today was an interesting day. Had a few things show up
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psa403835e.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps9baba913.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps94dc4a11.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psdcfbe8be.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psa09ffa30.jpg Also this came in http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps8e436472.jpg Before all the hating :p I actually purchased this s15 clip prior to posting my build thread here. I got an amazing deal on it and just couldnt pass it up. Its about the same or maybe even cheaper than a kouki swap would have cost me. I know its not for everyone :) |
Nice! How much you get it for if you don't mind me asking?
-Kyle |
Got my trunk lid installed. Was pretty annoying solo trying to keep the springs on both sides down while holding the lid even to get the bolts in :p
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps09db3567.jpg Its mega dirty in this picture. Also, I had to raise the lower latch for the lid to catch and stay closed. Its a little too high right now, I will try adjusting it a little bit lower this weekend to line up the tail lights a little better |
I also got my front coilovers lowered a bit the other day so now the rears and fronts are pretty even. (These are terrible pictures...sorry). Id like to do another 1 to 1.5 inch drop all around. Dont want to get too crazy, my apartment complex has like 10 speed bumps of varying heights from my unit to the front of the neighborhood, its way overkill
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps333a511f.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps46adc49e.jpg |
Got this in today, to be installed this weekend. Thanks to RussellM for the sweet deal
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps0d84b70d.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psd097833b.jpg Welcome to JB's chop shop, hahaha probably what my neighbors think http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...pse697180f.jpg |
Suuuuubbbbscribed lol..builds coming along amazing dude and i love your patients for your build it will pay off trust me man. o yea dont forget to tuck that wire harness under the driver fender lol
|
Thanks dude, I appreciate it! Glad someone likes it
|
Sorry guys, hit my bandwidth limit until the 20th. I guess it wasnt a good idea to have so many pictures on the 1st page lol
|
Hey dudes, can you please help out. I sold my stock t25 and sent the person the hard lines and drain tube -- I guess I sent them the bolts to the drain tube as well, does anyone know what size they are?
As a side note, I bolted up my DIF clocking adapters to my turbo and went to bolt up the circuit sports elbow that I have. Turns out it doesnt fit for shit. I then looked it up and found out that a bunch of people had issues with it fitting and they have since released a v2 and v3, Im guessing I have version 1... :\ This makes me worry about my circuit sports downpipe as well. I have been looking at the poweredbymax cobra 1 piece elbow/flex section/downpipe and its looking better and better... |

Awesome turbo elbow fitment: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psa4a576bc.jpg Im actually talking to Enjuku right now about possibly getting some kind of credit for it. It's a long shot since I purchased it in Oct. 2012, but I havent used it and am just now test fitting and seeing that it will not work. Replaced the o rings on my injectors Off with the old: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psfe428f56.jpg On with the new! http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps91130436.jpg DIF clocking adapters: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps91246702.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps1ae9a76e.jpg Oil restrictor. Get it right, get it tight! http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psc1f4c66b.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps6ba78cda.jpg Also installed the kouki bumper. I had some trouble because none of the retaining clip spots match up with the brackets on my bumper support. I also could not keep the styrofoam behind bumper. http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps7c2fd42d.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps0b5a78a2.jpg No way to mount the license plate... I just found out theres an oem bracket you can get but I wasn't able to locate one http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps4f58b1d1.jpg I currently have it ghetto zip tied via a chain of small zip ties running to the single hole at the top (probably what that bracket mounts to) and have it pushed into the 2 lips on the bottom. I drove it to work today and didnt find it hanging off the back or worse, gone, so... I dont know. Ill have to figure that one out. |
nice. are you getting rid of that SE lip then? i'll take it.
|
Lol yes I will be, still need to talk to Fever Racing to see how much they'll charge me for the fender welding to do the front conversion first. Also pending some hood hinges since this clip didnt come with them
|
i love this thread....
i guess a redtop s13 swap would be a good choice for my 95 zenki se... i am considering it. This threads confirms my thoughts of just breakin' down and getting one after tax time |
You should do it man!!
I cant comment on how fun it is to drive just yet lol But, the project has been both fun and a learning experience. If you dont plan on keeping the car forever, just toss the motor in there when you get it and have fun with maad skids |
well i just got notified of a huge change in my income which would allow for a ton more to be done to my 95 se zenki.
|
That's great man, congrats! Its not always about how much you make but really how much you spend. Up until this past year, I purchased everything on a very tight budget. If you want something bad enough you can live a frugal life to get the things that you want
|
Quote:
hopefully with this upcoming opportunity i will be doing alot more. car looks great btw. |
If you want to make a decent bracket just get two small strips of sheet metal/aluminum. bend two 90 deg L's drill a hole in each end, use a Nissan self tapping 10mm bolt and drill into the bumper support and screw the brackets onto the bumper support, then mount the license plate to the L brackets using a bolt/nut. Its what I did and has worked great for months.

Love that black paint with rainbow flake!

Anyways, no real progress made these past 2 weeks. 2 weekends ago I got a chance to go see my favorite metal band, Amon Amarth, which was amazing. This past weekend I didnt have a lot of time so I just did a little tinkering. I got some hoses/lines from vatozone and started replacing everything behind the intake manifold, on the intake manifold, and on the fuel rail. I didnt get to finish and I only took these few photos, sorry! http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps93082308.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps30bc12fa.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psc9c31b5c.jpg I got the quote for getting the s15 front end on and unfortunately it's more than what the front clip cost me. Ive seen their work and I know its professional; all the lines will match up, etc. It was a bit much to swallow, about double what I was expecting. I am going to worry about getting my motor wrapped up and installed first and then see about having them do the body work for me. Still waiting to hear back from enjuku/circuitsports about a possible credit for my fubar turbo outlet. I was looking on frsport's page at the tomei outlets and they have 3 different part #'s for what appears to be the same part. Pending a response from them on what the deal is before I order one |
Quote:
|
Fuck yeah! Amon Amarth! Too bad they cancelled their show here in NC due to snow -_-. I really wanted to see them and Enslaved. Motor is looking great! I am currently doing the same thing with mine.
After seeing the pic of you replacing your hoses underneath your intake manifold...I feel I need to take mine back off and go to vatozone and get some hose too smh. I probably should do that before my motor goes in. Any idea on a part number for the ones you got? |
Aw man thats unfortunate, the show was incredible. Skeletonwitch and Enslaved were really good as well but only did short like 30 minute sets.
I actually used positron's old sr20det build thread for the part numbers for the lines behind the intake manifold-- #4427 for the curvy piece #4374 for the straight piece (it is a curved line that I cut at the elbow) #4427 for the smaller straight piece (note: same part # as the curvy piece, its the same diameter so just ask them for a straight piece of that size or buy a 2nd curvy piece and chop off the straight end) For the lines on the actual manifold and the IACV feed/return and the fuel rail, I actually just brought everything in with me. They took me in the back and we matched up everything. Theres 1 large size, 1 medium size that is pretty common for most of the lines, and then 1 pretty skinny size for the fuel lines |
Quote:
|
you know what, when I went into the store with the numbers they typed them in and nothing came up and then they had to do some kind of "related" search to find them. I dont think that they are autozone's part numbers, but they will be able to find them there
|
So I got a couple things done this weekend, only snapped two pictures unfortunately and Ill have to upload them later when I get home.
I got pretty much all of the coolant and vacuum lines associated with the intake manifold area all hooked up, and the intake manifold bolted up. I got my exhaust manifold connected to the turbo, the fittings and lines onto the turbo, and finally the mani/turbo bolted to the block. I noticed the other day that my tires were rubbing the springs on my coilovers. I went and bought some 6mm wheel spacers and while I had the car jacked up I decided to lower it all around. I dropped another 2 inches and ran into some problems – I ran out of daylight so Ill have to wait to address these -The car is currently too low to drive, the tires are rubbing the fenders :\ -The car is too low to jack up, my jack got stuck when I removed the jack stands and I had to use a scissor jack to lift the side up. I guess Ill need to get some ramps or some 2x4’s to drive up on -One of my front hubs has a stud that is a ¼” shorter than the others. Now with the 6mm wheel spacer, there’s not enough stud to get the lug nut threaded on at all, and I only have 4 lug hubs So I went ahead and ordered some 5 lug hubs last night and Im just going to buy some new wheels. I am thinking 17x9.5 +12 all around with 235/40/17 tires with a slight fender roll, do you all think that will be alright fitment? Would really appreciate any advice. I started browsing through the wheel fitment thread but it seems like most people over there are running crazy large wheels |
Well here are some of the updates that I owe:
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps836e8ce9.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps2d16f7bf.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps68623ab4.jpg |
Got these in today..
1 1/16 Z32 BMC http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps20b617e8.jpg Some contano 5 lug wheel hubs http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps46200228.jpg The "wheels are rolling" so to speak... |
this thing is such a money pit
|
hurry and install the engine.
|
Haha man, you have no idea how badly I would like to! You have to remember that I am doing this mostly by myself and I am not very knowledgeable; everything I know I have learned from just reading others' build threads. I really do envy the people on here who do these projects with their dads, at their parents' homes with huge garages, or those who have friends that are basically mechanics. Ive got a buddy who comes by and helps here and there but he knows about the same as much as I do.
So today I went driving around. Hit up home depot and got some wood for some "steps" to drive my car up onto so I can jack it up now. Went to the local Midas and asked to buy a junk tire. I told them I needed it to set a motor on so I can get the flywheel/clutch/tranny bolted up. They gave me a pretty large tire for free actually, just said send them some business -- sweet deal! Swung by advance to get some p/s fluid. Out of curiosity I asked about ordering a rack & pinion so I can stop wasting money on my leaky one. They'll charge $135 + my core for a re-manufactured one, something to consider when I've got the motor out. I'm going to check out NAPA as well and see what they tell me before pulling the trigger. Can someone please answer some questions for me? Every time I ask, nobody responds, I could really use some help: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psb2bdcefe.jpg Where do those 2 lines go? I think that the one coming off of the FPR goes to the large nipple on the throttle body, but I'm not positive. And the other (that's cut short in this picture)? No clue. Also: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psa121dfce.jpg Where do these 2 go, also coming off of the FPR? There are 2 small nipples on the throttle body, do they just go to the top and bottom? Ive got new lines to put on the T, but didnt want to cut them until I knew the length that I needed. THANKS!!! Tonight's plans are to: get my turbo lines bolted onto the block as they are just hanging there. drill out the hole on my quest alternator and get it bolted up (missing the locking nut for the long bolt that goes on the bottom :\) crack open my tranny to install the new shifter bushing and shifter gasket install nismo mount on tranny possibly drop the motor onto that tire and bolt up my flywheel/clutch Is this too ambitious?? lol |
The fuel line on the FPR goes to return hard line to the fuel tank. The second fuel line comes from the filter.
|
Sweet, thats what Im talkin about! Thanks my friend.
It is so nice out I decided to do a little unfinished paint work, totally forgot to hit up my starter and turbo intake pipe http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps2d341972.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps4232f203.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps637e5de4.jpg (my new free junk tire is in the background here:) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps721d0112.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps3fd288f7.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps5c7a095a.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps380f59b5.jpg Taste the rainbow!! http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps2be598d8.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps52e6a562.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps44f34db6.jpg That was only 1 coat of the rainbow flake, I ended up doing 4 but didnt snap a picture |
I didn't get anything on my list accomplished this weekend. It was my friend's birthday so we hung out instead.
I received a z32 MAF adapter (not really picture worthy). I did not receive my tomei turbo outlet; called enjuku and apparently it is back-ordered for 3-4 weeks. This is what FRSport told me 2 weeks ago... Still trying to piece together my brake and wheel swap. Im looking for some front 26mm aluminum z32 calipers that aren't overpriced |
About the lines on the Throttle body: (copied from another thread)
The vacuum lines are simple: 3 lines start at the throttle body. The bottom one goes to the canister, block it off unless you are using the canister. The larger one on top runs to the bypass valve (BOV), there should be no tee's or branches - go directly to the BOV. The smaller top line splits to the fuel pressure regulator, and runs across the front of the engine to your boost gauge and/or the boost pressure port on your boost controller. The wastegate gets its signal from the nipple on the intercooler piping. |
Ah dude, that's awesome! Much appreciated
|
Guys,
Lowered car, greddy oil pain ---- skid plate: yes or no? is the $90 worth it? or should I take the risk? |

FPR should have it's own dedicated source from the TB. You are MUCH better off t-ing into the BOV than the FPR. I can live with the BOV not working or having an issue. a FPR having an issue can lead to a completely toasted engine! The bottom port is what I used for the FPR. |
Very interesting. Thanks for the informative post bud! I'm hoping that my build thread can be used by others in the future when they are looking for answers like these, so that's great, it really helps out
|
Mind you, not necessarily toasted from running lean, but the FPR would go straight to pump pressure. If the pump pressure is high enough, you can promote a rich-detonation condition. Not quiet as bad as lean ping, but still very bad for the engine nontheless.
Also, you would be chasing your tail for ages wondering why the thing runs so damn rich if a vacuum source for the FPR develops a leak :D |
much parts, such money. looking good though. Glad to see you just got a new turbo. With all that money you spent on everything else, seems kinda odd that you wanted to rebuild a stock t25
|
Lol, Im glad someone can appreciate how much money I have spent on this thing. The original plan was to run the stock t25 for like a year or so while saving up to go gt2871r.

EDIT Is that bottom port vacuum? |

No work has been done but I received a couple goodies today
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps75599b7c.jpg Some 30mm aluminum z32 front calipers http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps7ff7dd51.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psbdc2875b.jpg Aaaand some lug nuts Being broke and slowly working towards this 5 lug conversion and brake upgrade.. |
Very nice work, still waiting for that motor to be swapped in. Did you ever think about doing the S13.4 valve cover?
|
The 13.4 valve covers look pretty cool, but, is the benefit really that worthwhile for the cost? They just help recirculate the oil back onto the cams or something right?
I know, everyone wants to see the motor get in there. Im at a standstill because I have no help. There's not much left, just a bunch of little things :\ It will do me no good to get the motor in there right now though because I wouldnt be able to drive anyways. #1 I need to raise my suspension a little bit because my tires rub the fenders. #2, my tires are rubbing the springs on my brand new pbm coilovers (:(). #3 I got spacers for the front and found that one of my studs is a 1/4" shorter than the others and the lug nut wont thread on with the 6mm spacer ----- mostly why I decided to go forward with the 5 lug swap now. Also, since Im down there I figured I might as well upgrade my brakes as well lol |
|
Got some rotors and some z32 conversion lines. Now all I need is the expensive stuff lol -- the wheels, tires...and some pads

Dang, the time certainly flies.
I finally got around to drilling out my quest alternator and getting it set up http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psbf5d2cdf.jpg Ive got a few things coming in this week that I'm pretty excited about. Other than that, no updates for now -- school and work have been keeping me super busy EDIT: Aaaand I just realized that the codyace adapter is supposed to go behind the alternator not in front like how I have it |
Well guys, its been a while. The last parts of my 5 lug puzzle arrived. It was a real hassle dealing with UPS not working with me and my work schedule.
I got some Hawk HPS pads for the z32 calipers and the same for my s14 rear calipers (wow the size difference is crazy) http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psd27e2d11.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psdf92493e.jpg Some varrstoen es2.2 hyper black 17x9.5 all around and a set of yokohama s drive in 235/40/17 http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psbf96abba.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps0f502960.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psafcefa26.jpg |
Nice build thread! Really nice on the pictures makes for a great thread to sit and relax to! The size difference in the brake pads baffles me. Now I need to save up for a 5 lug swap!
|
I have never seen more photos on a single page than on page 1....wow! haha nice build brother.
|
Well I didnt take as many pictures as I wish I would have.
It took my friend and I a good 12 hours on sunday to do the entire job. -- Get off the 4 lug hubs, throw on the 5 lug hubs, load new brake pads into the z32 calipers and stock s14 rear calipers, slip on new rotors, attach the z32 calipers and braided lines, raise front suspension 1/4", raise rear suspension 1/2", bolt up the wheels, install the 17/16" BMC, bend the hard lines for the bmc, bleed the brakes after all was said and done, the rear wheels poke a bit. none of them are rubbing the fender lip but Im going to roll all 4 corners anyways, and the rear will need a slight pull. I may drop back down a little once the roll and pull is done. When I turn the wheel, the inside lip of the front wheels touch my coils, so I need to grab some thin (5mm?) spacers. I actually picked some up today on my way home from work and went to throw them on but they were too large (circumference wise). http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psea28d641.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps36842663.jpg this dust cap took me an hour and a half to get off..... http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psf02fefbb.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps051de6cf.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps447edad7.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psf94cfdd6.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps4ae5b36e.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psd0c07312.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps110a0ae8.jpg I dont know why but this picture makes the fender areas look pretty empty. In person it looks like the wheels really fill them in well http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psc0f0d8fd.jpg |
I scooped up a few 5mm spacers the other day for the front wheels and threw them on. I was only able to get 4/10 of the front lug nuts to click to 80ftlbs while torquing them down (3 on 1 side, 1 on the other, the rest would just spin). I ended up pushing the camber adjustments on the tophat of my coilovers all the way inwards and pulling the knuckle out all the way and there is now [very minimal] clearance between the lip of my wheels and the coilover
I went to roll my fenders today and it was an utter failure. I zip tied my body harness up a little bit but never did the full relocation and hammering of that metal lip inside the wheel well, so guess what? the roller continually got stopped by either the harness or the metal lip. There was about 1/4 of the arch that I could roll. Before I could even use it though, my front hubs werent spinning with the car in the air so I couldnt even turn the roller. I poked my head in there and wouldn't you know, the bolts that hold the calipers on were sticking out and touching the back the rotors. I thought I remembered someone saying they used a 2nd washer when using their stock bolts with these calipers! I got some 12mm crush washers and it fixed the pass. side, but I found some new problems on the drivers side. Apparently the metal "wear indicator" is carving a ring around the center part of my rotor. The top and the bottom of the actual caliper are also rubbing a nice ring around the outside diameter of the rotor. wtf man so many problems!! Not sure how to fix this rubbing, its almost like the caliper is a little crooked or something, maybe I should try more washers? or more on just the bottom or just the top to try it tilt it straight? I have no idea, if its not one thing, its another. Here are some fun pictures: http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps75274551.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...psc00b4bcc.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps76ca96a4.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps2dd6a058.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps0f58df03.jpg Besides that fun stuff, apparently trying to torque down my sweet neochrome lug nuts with those spacers on caused the inside threads to strip out and the front 10 are useless now. |
i believe its because you have the abs style rotors which will grind on the brakes double check them. the same thing happened to me when i did my 5 lug conversion. i had the abs rotors on a non abs car lmao
|
You're supposed to have extended lug nuts when having spacers, well obviously not the bigger spacers that have studs on them. Turbo II RX-7's have longer studs that fit Nissan's.
|
I'll have to give it a look in the morning, Im way too worn out to go jack my car up and pull the wheels off again. Is there any way to tell by the item #? I got these from FRSport: Brembo 40206 04U03 OE Replacement Front Brake Rotor Disc 300ZX Z32 280x30mm
Item #: 40206 04U03 http://www.frsport.com/Brembo-40206-...m_p_15411.html |
Are you sure the calipers are the 30mm version? I have 30mm calipers and rotors on my car and the clearance is nowhere near that tight. *Referring to the last picture.
This is the brake swap guide I used and it shows the difference between the three 300zx calipers. http://importnut.net/300zxbrakeswap.htm Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk |
I bought them off of someone here on zilvia, advertised as 30mm. I will take a measurement today
#/f/showthread.php?t=555715 |
I just measured and they are most definitely 26mm.
