I have a '96 240SX (CA spec) with roughtly 110k miles.
It had 2 catalytic converters.
Within a week after getting an A'pexi Power Intake and N1 Dual exhaust, a hole was blown through the exhaust path inside the rear catalytic converter. I got this immediately replaced with a Catco universal cat. Within month, the insides of the front catalytic converter was completely blown apart and came out of the front pipe as dust and debris. I am reluctant on replacing this one since the OEM part is expensive. I also heard that the car only needs one cat to pass CA smog. Currently, I am running with a hollowed out front cat. I believe the rear Catco is a 2-way converter.
Should I wait until I have to smog the car to replace the front cat? Would it be better to take the front cat assembly and put in a custom front pipe? Would it be better to replace the front cat with the OEM part? By doing so, will the rear cat become unnecessary? Would an option be to get a Hotshot header and trust the Catco to meet CA smog? Would the Greddy header and custom secondary pipe be better?
What do you guys think?
