I have a '96 240SX (CA spec) with roughtly 110k miles.
It had 2 catalytic converters.

Within a week after getting an A'pexi Power Intake and N1 Dual exhaust, a hole was blown through the exhaust path inside the rear catalytic converter. I got this immediately replaced with a Catco universal cat. Within month, the insides of the front catalytic converter was completely blown apart and came out of the front pipe as dust and debris. I am reluctant on replacing this one since the OEM part is expensive. I also heard that the car only needs one cat to pass CA smog. Currently, I am running with a hollowed out front cat. I believe the rear Catco is a 2-way converter.

Should I wait until I have to smog the car to replace the front cat? Would it be better to take the front cat assembly and put in a custom front pipe? Would it be better to replace the front cat with the OEM part? By doing so, will the rear cat become unnecessary? Would an option be to get a Hotshot header and trust the Catco to meet CA smog? Would the Greddy header and custom secondary pipe be better?

What do you guys think?

The frontmost one is the primary cat and is the very expensive one. The second one is the 2ndary cat and does very little i would think because if you look inside it it is pretty much completely hollow.
I do have an almost brand new front one off my car I crashed if you want to buy it. Only had it for a couple months before totaling the car.

My catalytic converter needs to be replaced too. I'm thinking about getting a high flow one from Random Technology but I haven't heard anything about that brand. Any of you guys hear about it?

iirc, the "2nd cat" in an s14 isn't a cat at all, it's a hollow resonator. The first one is the one to worry about.

Haha KEIV, I told you the 2nd one was just a resonator, you foolish human &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hehe:'>

Come on! The rear one on my car was actually real.
If you doubt me, I'll bring it to the PV meet to prove you wrong! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

Is the primary cat the "real" 3-way one?
Is the rear the 2-way "optional" one for CA cars?

Since the OEM cat is so expensive, I was thinking about going with Random Technologies too. However, I don't think they have the complete cat & piping combo for our cars.

I want to know if I should replace the front one with a 3-way and take out the rear. Or leave the front one empty and get a 3-way in the rear. Does it make a difference?

The lower cat is hollow....I am in Los Angeles and my friends have S14...it's hollow.

The reason i know it's hollow it that is why we all use that on SR swapped cars...it looks like a cat but flow right through.

Random Tech, N-Tech or Bonez are all good HiFlo cats.

THE "SECOND CAT" IS NOT A CAT. IT IS A RESONATOR. IT IS USED TO MAKE THE EXHAUST QUIETER. IF YOU USE IT IN PLACE OF A CAT YOU WILL LOSE POWER. BY DEFINITION, IF IT IS HOLLOW, IT IS NOT A CAT.

AND YES I'M USING ALL CAPS BECAUSE I'M YELLING.
