Yeah....I'm buying new tires tomorrow and was wondering if anyone had a strong opinion on one over the other. I have the five lug se (205-55-16) rims, and was planning on putting some Perellie's on her. Any other suggestions?

I think Pirelli are a little overated...suggestions

Yokohama- AVS Sport or AVS Intermediate. Great street tires. Good compound. Warm up pretty good but the downside is that they wear fast.

Toyo- T1-S very similar to the AVS Sport. Good all around. A little harder than the Yokohama but still a great street tire.

Nitto- 555(not the drag radials) I nickname these the 55Slide cuz they are a hard compond that don't really grip for crap. They will last you a hell of a long time.

Kuhmo - Escata not bad for the price. Similar to the Nitto 555. I did skid through an intersection with these so they don't grip that well but they are not bad.

I've used all these tires on my FD at one time or another. Just so you know i'm not pulling facts out my ass.

Yokohama 502's I think they are called are supposed to be really good tires...the members of FA seem to worship them
I can't comment on those from experiance tho...

I currently have Falken Azeins and they are awsome.
Plus: Insane ammount of grip, they look cool , really really stickey, super stiff sidewalls, awsome grip, large contact patch, and did I mention pretty damn grippy...
Minus: Treadwear of only 200 (still better than yoko avs or 502), subpar wet traction, a tad heavier than other performance tires, most places don't cary them.

I love my current tires and will probably buy either, potenza s03, yoko 502, or another set of azenis for my next tire.

I agree w/ West - what are you looking for?

I run RE71's and I like them. A couple other things to keep in mind: 1) treadwear ratings are not always honest. I can show you 300 tires that run less than 200's; 2) Yok's have a reputation... but not always great. Many find them hard, and yet quick to wear.

The main thing I am looking for is Grip and cost. I don't care too much for the life of the tire because I plan on doing rims within the year. I just need new tires for a trip to California, and mine need replacing. The Falken's sound really nice though....any pricing would help.

Thanks in advance.....Mark

hey mark, you got RE71's?? i had those on my old Z32 and they wore out in about 12k miles, but that did include 2 high speed autox and a drivers school. they were pretty sweet though, how long have you had yours?

If you want cheap tires with performance, Kumho's run for 75-80 for 205-55-16. I myself bought Dunlop W10's for 85 each. they're great tires, I only have two right now though, but when I get the other two I'll see how they really perform.

Kuhmo's are about the same price as falkens. Kuhmo's would be more price-durability whereas falkens are price-performance.

I got my 205/55/16 falken azenis from http://www.tires.com for just under $340 with free shipping.

Travis - I've only had them for one track weekend and a parking lot autox. I'm expecting to need new tires by winter They are damb nice though It's cool though - b/c I don't daily drive my car, I can get the lowest wearing, loudest tires I want and it really doesn't matter.

Tyler - if you are looking for tires for a road trip, I don't recommend the Azenis. I know plenty of people with them who, in mixed driving (track and street) get about 7K mi. out of a set. A couple of road trips on those things are you have just burned up a set of nice sticky tires for no good reason. If you put more than 20K/yr on your car, odds are you will go through two sets of Azenises a year. Even though they're cheap, that gets expensive.

Well, now I can speak from experience I have been working at a performance shop for about a month now, and some guy just swapped off some Yoki A520's that still had about 20% tread left, I figured I would try them out for a few weeks while they still have some tread left... and all I can say is holy shit. They are only a 180 treadwear, but I can drop the clutch at 4000 with almost no wheel spin, can barely powersteer cause even a u turn under full throttle only results in minimum wheel steer and rather than letting off I can stomp straight through, the car only needs 30 feet to go straight again, and I can BARELY lock the tires under full braking. They heat up fairly quick, and I went and drove them hard for a few laps last night and they stick like hell... I dream what they would be like brand new. They are almost drag tires right now (please.... no rain for a few weeks) but I tried them, they stick like hell, and they came off the last car after 1.5 summers, and about 15k miles. They wear fast, but you'll have fun while they are on there and they are cheap!

actually, assuming it doesn't get cold and brittle, and it's not exposed to other damaging elements, a tire has more grip the more it wears down. this happens because there is less squirm in the tread blocks. and yes, i had a set of A520's on my old maxima and they do dominate.

From what I've read....sounds like the Re71's are pretty nice....except the tread doesn't last for shit. I think I'm gonna go ahead and get em; and then probably do the rims and tires in August. They will last me through August right .

Thanks for the help guys.

yeah they'll last you until august. you sure you can still get them? i got em 2 years ago and they had already been discontinued for a bit back then. they might be real tough to find.

Cool, but careful, they are not great on water so take it easy on the water.

anthony240, how are the W-10s? I've heard very mixed reviews about them -- some absolutely LOVE them, while others completely DESPISE them. What're your thoughts?
Anyone know where we might be able to get good deals on W10s since they're supposedly being "phased out"?
Thanks.

Good luck on finding RE71's! -I got mine through Tirerack for cheap b/c they only had them in a few sizes. If not those, I would have gone for S-03's or maybe Kumhos.

If you can find RE71s or AVS-i's, they are probably the best streetable tire around, but both are discontinued - if you can find them, they are both cheap (now) and good. I thought A520s were a bit more expensive (like $120/tire)?

I'm gonna toss in if you plan to get a new set of wheels and tires this summer anyway, get a set of tires that isn't like the ones you plan to get later. Like a good set of better daily driving tires for your trip (in case it rains you don't want some dry tires that run out in 7000 miles and never even get to drive hard on them) or get the set you would want to autocross with now so you wear off some of the tread blocks and have a "slicker" tire when it comes time to race. Then you can get good dry/wet tires with your new rims for daily driving so your car looks good.

I just got new rims and tires, but I'm tempted to get really good dry tires mounted to my stock wheels for racing (stock size so no points) plus I don't have to worry about tread wear or rain. Too bad the azinis don't come in 205/55/15. And I still have snow tires mounted on steelies so I'm ready for everything.

Speaking of a great tire, any of you try the Potenza s02's?
Super sticky, wears out hella fast and i must say the grip is amazing. Too bad the tire is hella expensive. Or how about the Dunlop Sport. I used to have those and they were way better than the yoko's i have now. But i also like the kuhmo's also. They have a suprior price, great grip, and a pretty good tread life. These are all my past tires.
